provide for their children. Usually they would throw the boys on the streets but keep the girls because they could make profit off of them. However, some orphans like Cosette as portrayed in Les Miserables found someone who would love and care for them. Upon careful research this paper will show not only how <a href='/topics/jean-valjean' style='color:#3174a3'>Jean Valjean</a> helped Cosette but also how he hindered her. In this case Jean Valjean represents the allegory of the New France and Cosette represents the women of France, so the way Valjean treats her shows us how the New France treated women. The impoverished<a data-href=/writing/document/FKCFSD23TJ class="document__middle white-space--normal source-serif text-l" rel="nofollow" style="cursor:pointer;white-space: normal;"> <i>&hellip;show more content&hellip;</i> </a></p></span><span class="document__preview text-l source-serif "><p class='text-ellipsis-after'>This illustrates why most of France’s citizens had low paying jobs and were impoverished. Before the revolution, women in France had a really tough time living a good life. Women’s oppression was a major factor in Les Miserables. For instance, when Fantine is talking to the Thenadiers and says, “You see I cannot take my child into the country. Work forbids it. With a child I could not find a place there…it will not be long before I come back. Will you keep my child for me?”(Les Miserables, Book Four, Ch.1). This illustrates that women could not get a job out of wedlock. It also shows how far people would go to live a good life. Women had an even harder life than men did insofar as they got lower pay and had an even harder time getting jobs. Some women even went as far as selling their bodies, hair, and even teeth for money. Another thing a lot of women did was become prostitutes to the degree that it was the only possible way for them to earn some money. Even though a lot of women had to drop down low enough to sell the bodies for money, prostitution was still illegal. People might say that women had an even harder life than children. Every single thing in life was difficult for women; there was no abortion or protection so the chance of women, especially prostitutes, getting pregnant was insane. Most women could not support themselves so if they had children the only thing they could do was give them up which explains why there was so many orphans</p></span></div><div class="paper__gradient paper__gradient--bottom"></div><div class="center paper__cta"><a class="button text-m button--orange" id="ShowMoreButton" rel="nofollow" data-href="/writing/document/FKCFSD23TJ">Get Access</a></div></div></div></div><div class="columns large-4 hide-for-medium-only hide-for-small-only"><div class="rhino-slot center" id="essay_ad_sidebar"></div><div class="rhino-slot center" id="essay_ad_sidebar_1"></div></div></div><div class="row essay-preview-block essay-related-block "><div class="columns large-12 padding-1 no-padding-large"><div class="columns large-12 paper--related-separator-new"><span class="paper--related-separator-word">Related</span></div><div class="rhino-slot center" id="essay_ad_related"></div><section class=""><ul id="RelatedDocumentCenter" class="unstyled"><li id="related-essay1"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Dbq-3rd-Estate-French-Revolution-5209ACE49769194E" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Dbq 3rd Estate French Revolution</h2></a><ul><li>839 Words</li><li>4 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Dbq-3rd-Estate-French-Revolution-5209ACE49769194E" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Dbq 3rd Estate French Revolution</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">During the 1700s, France’s government was run by a three system estate system. The First Estate was made up by the powerful clergy members, while the Second Estate was made with nobles. Peasants and working men made the Third Estate, also the largest estate. In this large estate there was a little class named the Bourgeoisie was a part of the Third Estate. Though the Bourgeoisie was highly educated and always had stable professions, they were not set aside from the peasants. The Third Estate was treated very poorly during the 1700s. Life was not suitable for the working class. The mistreatment and inequality led to the French Revolution. Inequality during this time period meant that things were not the same throughout each class. Unequal power between the estates, abuse of the Third Estate, and the taxes and price raises were the three reasons that outweighed the many political, social, and economic factors that led to the French Revolution.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>839 Words</li><li>4 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Dbq-3rd-Estate-French-Revolution-5209ACE49769194E">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay2"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/French-Revolution-Dbq-Questions-And-Answers-5A8F178619EE5251" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">French Revolution Dbq Questions And Answers</h2></a><ul><li>666 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/French-Revolution-Dbq-Questions-And-Answers-5A8F178619EE5251" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">French Revolution Dbq Questions And Answers</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">The third estate, the class with the largest population in France during this era, was treated extremely poorly. The third estate was heavily taxed and barely had any land amongst themselves. They were forced to live together in a small amount of space. On top of that they were starving. They were hungry and so poor that they could barely afford the most basic of food, bread. The lords and nobles had no respect/compassion for the third estate. They completely disregarded the fact that those in the third estate were humans and treated them with no sympathy. Property tax was so heavy that no one could afford to pay (Document 1). First cause is the harm done to her family; second cause is the Widow’s perception of violence during that time; and the third cause is her aggression toward the killer of her son. The first cause of her revenge is the most obvious reason why she avenged the death of her son, and this is because the killer caused pain to her family. Any mother would be committing the act especially that her son was the only company she has. The second cause pertains to the Widow’s perception of revenge during that time, and because at the time, wars and feuds were still evident in the French society, bloodshed for the Widow is not something to be scared of, given any means. This story was only successful in showing to its readers how the society thinks of death during those times, which can be achieved through any means, by which losing one’s life was not something to be thought of carefully. This just proves that during that time, morality was not given high regard as it is now. Death by any means can be accomplished by anybody, regardless of age, gender, and status in society.
