Les sculptures sont acquises par le pape <a href="https://selene.bordeaux.fr/ark:/27705/330636101_ROU_27_117" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Clément XI</a> qui les fait exposer au « Campidoglio » (soit au musée du Capitole) avant qu’elles ne rejoignent au XIX<sup>e</sup> siècle le <a href="https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/fr/collezioni/musei/museo-gregoriano-egizio/sala-v--statuario/gruppo-con-tolomeo-ii.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Museo gregoriano egizio</a>.</p> <p>A l&#8217;origine, les statues se trouvaient dans les jardins sur l’ordre de l&#8217;empereur Caligula (12-41). Trois d’entre elles sont des statues royales et proviennent en réalité d’Égypte : les souverains ptolémaïques <a href="https://catalogo.museivaticani.va/index.php/Detail/objects/MV.22681.0.0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arsinoé II Philadelphe</a> (celle du dessin ) et <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b7200485v/f20.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ptolémée II</a>, son frère et époux, ainsi que <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b7200485v/f32.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tuya</a>, mère de Ramsès II. Les deux autres représentent des versions égyptisantes de <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b7200485v/f38.item.zoom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Caligula</a> et de sa sœur <a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b7200485v/f14.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Drusilla</a> divinisés. Preuve de la fascination des empereurs romains pour l&#8217;Égypte, Caligula a fait aussi transporter un obélisque en granit depuis Alexandrie jusqu&#8217;à Rome (il se dresse aujourd&#8217;hui sur<a href="https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b531929117/f9.item" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> la place Saint-Pierre au Vatican</a>).</p> <p>Comme l’indique le texte en italien sur la première page de ce <a href="http://ark.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb40348738c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recueil de dessins</a>, c&#8217;est le « cavaliere » Giovanni de Chierichelli, lié par un contrat ou mandat (?) spécial (« special chirografo ») au pape, qui s&#8217;est chargé de « faire restaurer » ces statues. De Chierichelli faisait partie de la magistrature pontificale et semble avoir travaillé comme conservateur. Il aurait fait l&#8217;intermédiaire avec le sculpteur Francesco Maratti (ca 1669-1719), originaire de Padoue, qui avait déjà travaillé pour plusieurs projets de la papauté.</p> <p>Les dessins nous renseignent sur l’état fragmentaire des statues à l’origine et sur leur état après restauration (« risarcimento »), suite à l’intervention de Maratti. Le recueil fait office de « rapport de restauration » pour reprendre l’analyse de ce document unique faite par Brigitte Bourgeois dans son article.</p> <p>La statue colossale &#8211; de 2,70m de haut &#8211; de la reine <a href="https://data.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb124860487" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arsinoé II Philadelphe</a> (-316 -270 av. J.-C) la représente comme une reine égyptienne reconnaissable à ses attributs : perruque tripartite ornée de deux <em>uraeus </em>et collier<em>-menat</em> dans la main. Sur le pilier dorsal, une colonne de hiéroglyphes, parfois recopiés maladroitement, permet de l’identifier : dans le cartouche, son nom grec est retranscrit phonétiquement avec les signes « I-R-S-I-N-A ».
