The concept of tyranny is not explicitly defined in the Bible, but the characteristics and actions of tyrannical leaders are depicted throughout Scripture. These leaders are often portrayed as those who defy God's authority, oppress the people, and lead nations into idolatry and sin.<br><br><b>Old Testament Examples</b><br><br>One of the earliest examples of a tyrannical ruler in the Bible is Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, during the time of Moses. Pharaoh's oppressive rule over the Israelites is highlighted in the book of Exodus. He subjected the Israelites to harsh slavery and refused to let them go, despite the plagues sent by God. <a href="/exodus/1-13.htm">Exodus 1:13-14</a> states, "They worked the Israelites ruthlessly and made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor, the Egyptians used them<a name="web" id="web"></a><div class="vheading2">Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary</div>1. (<I>n.</I>) An absolute ruler; a sovereign unrestrained by law or constitution; a usurper of sovereignty.<p>2. (<I>n.</I>) Specifically, a monarch, or other ruler or master, who uses power to oppress his subjects; a person who exercises unlawful authority, or lawful authority in an unlawful manner; one who by taxation, injustice, or cruel punishment, or the demand of unreasonable services, imposes burdens and hardships on those under his control, which law and humanity do not authorize, or which the purposes of government do not require; a cruel master; an oppressor.<p>3.
