reinforced concrete modular buildings in Singapore and Hong Kong, China. However, its effect on the global behaviour of modular buildings in high seismic zones was not studied. Therefore, the design concept and the structural performance of each component in this connection was investigated through analytical approach. Response spectrum, linear time-history, and nonlinear time-history analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of the different joint models of the Candle-Loc in the global analysis of high-rise buildings under high seismic loads. It is found that it is important to assess the level of plasticity developed in the inter-module connection under high seismic loads. The ductility of the lateral force resisting system influences the amount of load taken by the inter-module connections. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high-rise" title="high-rise">high-rise</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inter-module%20connection" title=" inter-module connection"> inter-module connection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nonlinear" title=" nonlinear"> nonlinear</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic" title=" seismic"> seismic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=time-history%20analysis" title=" time-history analysis"> time-history analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170766/behaviour-and-design-of-the-candle-loc-inter-module-connection-in-high-rise-modular-buildings-under-seismic-action" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170766.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">203</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">67</span> Extensions to Chen&#039;s Minimizing Equal Mass Paralellogram Solutions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdalla%20Manur">Abdalla Manur</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20Offin"> Daniel Offin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Arsie"> Alessandro Arsie</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, we study the extension of the minimizing equal mass parallelogram solutions which was derived by Chen in 2001. Adversarial examples, crafted by adding subtle yet malicious alterations to benign images, exploit this vulnerability. Various defense strategies have been proposed to safeguard DNNs against such attacks, stemming from diverse research hypotheses. Building upon prior work, our approach involves the utilization of autoencoder models. Autoencoders, a type of neural network, are trained to learn representations of training data and reconstruct inputs from these representations, typically minimizing reconstruction errors like mean squared error (MSE). Our autoencoder was trained on a dataset of benign examples; learning features specific to them. Consequently, when presented with significantly perturbed adversarial examples, the autoencoder exhibited high reconstruction errors. The architecture of the autoencoder was tailored to the dimensions of the images under evaluation. We considered various image sizes, constructing models differently for 256x256 and 512x512 images. Moreover, the choice of the computer vision model is crucial, as most adversarial attacks are designed with specific AI structures in mind. To mitigate this, we proposed a method to replace image-specific dimensions with a structure independent of both dimensions and neural network models, thereby enhancing robustness. Our multi-modal autoencoder reconstructs the spectral representation of images across the red-green-blue (RGB) color channels. To validate our approach, we conducted experiments using diverse datasets and subjected them to adversarial attacks using models such as ResNet50 and ViT_L_16 from the torch vision library. The autoencoder extracted features used in a classification model, resulting in an MSE (RGB) of 0.014, a classification accuracy of 97.33%, and a precision of 99%. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adversarial%20attacks" title="adversarial attacks">adversarial attacks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=malicious%20images%20detector" title=" malicious images detector"> malicious images detector</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=binary%20classifier" title=" binary classifier"> binary classifier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multimodal%20transformer%20autoencoder" title=" multimodal transformer autoencoder"> multimodal transformer autoencoder</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/174687/resisting-adversarial-assaults-a-model-agnostic-autoencoder-solution" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/174687.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">113</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> An Approach to Physical Performance Analysis for Judo</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stefano%20Frassinelli">Stefano Frassinelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Niccolai"> Alessandro Niccolai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Riccardo%20E.%20Zich"> Riccardo E. The water flow at junction has been studied for the last 50 years from the physical-hydraulic point of views and for numerical computations need more attention. For numerical simulation, we need to establish an inner boundary condition at the junction to avoid an oscillation which rise from the waves interactions at the junction. Indeed, we introduce a new boundary condition at the junction based on the mass conservation, total head, and the admissible wave relations between the flow parameters in the three branches to predict the water depths and discharges at the junction. These boundary conditions are valid for sub-critical flow and super-critical flow. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=numerical%20simulation" title="numerical simulation">numerical simulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=junction%20flow" title=" junction flow"> junction flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sub-critical%20flow" title=" sub-critical flow"> sub-critical flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=super-critical%20flow" title=" super-critical flow"> super-critical flow</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/44090/numerical-solution-of-1-d-shallow-water-equations-at-junction-for-sub-critical-and-super-critical-flow" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/44090.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">511</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">62</span> Vibrations of Springboards: Mode Shape and Time Domain Analysis </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stefano%20Frassinelli">Stefano Frassinelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Niccolai"> Alessandro Niccolai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Riccardo%20E.%20Zich"> Riccardo E. In this paper, the vibrations of the springboard will be analyzed by means of typical tools for vibration analysis: Firstly, a modal analysis will be done on two different models of the springboard, then, these two model and another one will be analyzed with a time analysis, done integrating the equations of motion od deformable bodies. All these analyses will be compared with experimental data measured on a real springboard by means of a 6-axis accelerometer; these measurements are aimed to assess the models proposed. Typically, UAV architectures use the civilian GPS, which is exposed to a number of different attacks, such as jamming or spoofing. This is why it is important to develop alternative methodologies to accurately estimate the actual UAV position without relying on GPS measurements only. In this paper, we propose a position estimate method for UAVs based on monocular visual odometry. We have developed a flight control system capable of keeping track of the entire trajectory travelled, with a reduced dependency on the availability of GPS signals. Moreover, the simplicity of the developed solution makes it applicable to a wide range of commercial drones. The final goal is to allow for safer flights in all conditions, even under cyber-attacks trying to deceive the drone. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20odometry" title="visual odometry">visual odometry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomous%20uav" title=" autonomous uav"> autonomous uav</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=position%20measurement" title=" position measurement"> position measurement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomous%20outdoor%20flight" title=" autonomous outdoor flight"> autonomous outdoor flight</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139336/visual-odometry-and-trajectory-reconstruction-for-uavs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139336.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">219</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Development of a Numerical Model to Predict Wear in Grouted Connections for Offshore Wind Turbine Generators</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paul%20Dallyn">Paul Dallyn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ashraf%20El-Hamalawi"> Ashraf El-Hamalawi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Palmeri"> Alessandro Palmeri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bob%20Knight"> Bob Knight</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In order to better understand the long term implications of the grout wear failure mode in large-diameter plain-sided grouted connections, a numerical model has been developed and calibrated that can take advantage of existing operational plant data to predict the wear accumulation for the actual load conditions experienced over a given period, thus limiting the need for expensive monitoring systems. Results: Combining Le Fort I osteotomy with closed approach rhinoplasty resulted in good objective results with high patient satisfaction. Le Fort I osteotomy will increase projection of mid face and the closed approach rhinoplasty will modify the nasal shape to be more harmonic with the new maxillary district. The scars are not visible because hidden inside the mouth and nose. Conclusions: The orthognathic surgery combined with closed approach rhinoplasty are very effective for changing the aesthetic of the mid face. This force is opening new frontiers in the field, contributing to a general understanding of the mechanisms of axon growth that, in the past, was thought to be governed exclusively by the growth cone and its ability to influence axonal growth in response to chemical signals. A method recently developed in our laboratory allows, through the labeling of neurons with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and the use of permanent magnets, to apply extremely low mechanical forces, similar to those generated endogenously by the growth cone or by the increase of body mass during the organism growth. We found that these extremely low forces strongly enhance the spontaneous axonal elongation rate as well as neuronal sprouting. Data obtained don’t exclude that local phenomena, such as local transport and local translation, may be involved. These new advances could shed new light on what happens when the cell is subjected to external mechanical forces, opening new interesting scenarios in the field of mechanobiology. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=axon" title="axon">axon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=external%20mechanical%20forces" title=" external mechanical forces"> external mechanical forces</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=magnetic%20nanoparticles" title=" magnetic nanoparticles"> magnetic nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mechanotransduction" title=" mechanotransduction"> mechanotransduction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/112124/advances-in-axonal-biomechanics-and-mechanobiology-a-nanotechnology-based-approach-to-the-study-of-mechanotransduction-of-axonal-growth" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/112124.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">122</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">54</span> Object-Centric Process Mining Using Process Cubes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anahita%20Farhang%20Ghahfarokhi">Anahita Farhang Ghahfarokhi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Berti"> Alessandro Berti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wil%20M.P.%20van%20der%20Aalst"> Wil M.P. van der Aalst</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Process mining provides ways to analyze business processes. Common process mining techniques consider the process as a whole. However, in real-life business processes, different behaviors exist that make the overall process too complex to interpret. Process comparison is a branch of process mining that isolates different behaviors of the process from each other by using process cubes. Process cubes organize event data using different dimensions. Each cell contains a set of events that can be used as an input to apply process mining techniques. Existing work on process cubes assume single case notions. However, in real processes, several case notions (e.g., order, item, package, etc.) are intertwined. Object-centric process mining is a new branch of process mining addressing multiple case notions in a process. To make a bridge between object-centric process mining and process comparison, we propose a process cube framework, which supports process cube operations such as slice and dice on object-centric event logs. To facilitate the comparison, the framework is integrated with several object-centric process discovery approaches. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multidimensional%20process%20mining" title="multidimensional process mining">multidimensional process mining</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mMulti-perspective%20business%20processes" title=" mMulti-perspective business processes"> mMulti-perspective business processes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=OLAP" title=" OLAP"> OLAP</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=process%20cubes" title=" process cubes"> process cubes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=process%20discovery" title=" process discovery"> process discovery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=process%20mining" title=" process mining"> process mining</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/131006/object-centric-process-mining-using-process-cubes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/131006.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">256</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">53</span> Critical Review of Oceanic and Geological Storage of Carbon Sequestration</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Milad%20Nooshadi">Milad Nooshadi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Manzardo"> Alessandro Manzardo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> CO₂ emissions in the atmosphere continue to rise, mostly as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels. CO₂ injection into the oceans and geological formation as a process of physical carbon capture are two of the most promising emerging strategies for mitigating climate change and global warming. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the two mentioned methods of CO₂ sequestration and to assess information on previous and current advancements, limitations, and uncertainties associated with carbon sequestration in order to identify possible prospects for ensuring the timely implementation of the technology, such as determining how governments and companies can gain a better understanding of CO₂ storage in terms of which media have the most applicable capacity, which type of injection has the fewer environmental impact, and how much carbon sequestration and storage will cost. The behavior of several forms is characterized as a near field, a far field, and a see-floor in ocean storage, and three medias in geological formations as an oil and gas reservoir, a saline aquifer, and a coal bed. To determine the capacity of various forms of media, an analysis of some models and practical experiments are necessary. Additionally, as a major component of sequestration, the various injection methods into diverse media and their monitoring are associated with a variety of environmental impacts and financial consequences. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbon%20sequestration" title="carbon sequestration">carbon sequestration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ocean%20storage" title=" ocean storage"> ocean storage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geologic%20storage" title=" geologic storage"> geologic storage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbon%20transportation" title=" carbon transportation"> carbon transportation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161056/critical-review-of-oceanic-and-geological-storage-of-carbon-sequestration" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161056.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">102</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">52</span> Cement-Based Composites with Carbon Nanofillers for Smart Structural Health Monitoring Sensors</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonella%20D%27Alessandro">Antonella D&#039;Alessandro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Filippo%20Ubertini"> Filippo Ubertini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Annibale%20Luigi%20Materazzi"> Annibale Luigi Materazzi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The progress of nanotechnology resulted in the development of new instruments in the field of civil engineering. In particular, the introduction of carbon nanofillers into construction materials can enhance their mechanical and electrical properties. In construction, concrete is among the most used materials. Due to the characteristics of its components and its structure, concrete is suitable for modification, at the nanometer level too. Moreover, to guarantee structural safety, it is desirable to achieve a widespread monitoring of structures. The ideal thing would be to realize structures able to identify their behavior modifications, states of incipient damage or conditions of possible risk for people. This paper presents a research work about novel cementitious composites with conductive carbon nanoinclusions able of monitoring their state of deformation, with particular attention to concrete. The self-sensing ability is achieved through the correlation between the variation of stress or strain and that of electrical resistance. Carbon nanofillers appear particularly suitable for such applications. Nanomodified concretes with different carbon nanofillers has been tested. The samples have been subjected to cyclic and dynamic loads. The experimental campaign shows the potentialities of this new type of sensors made of nanomodified concrete for diffuse Structural Health Monitoring. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbon%20nanofillers" title="carbon nanofillers">carbon nanofillers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cementitious%20nanocomposites" title=" cementitious nanocomposites"> cementitious nanocomposites</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=smart%20sensors" title=" smart sensors"> smart sensors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20health%20monitoring." title=" structural health monitoring. European Air Transport Command (EATC) is integrated by seven nations, and among its capabilities is that of aeromedical evacuation (AM). Material and methods: Impact of novel coronavirus was analysed based on the number and characteristics of patients and executed missions within EATC and, particularly by Spain, during the biennium 2020-2021. Results: One thousand sixty patients were transported in 186 missions. Neither death nor disease contagion was reported during AM performances. Military cases transferred were 986, mostly routine priority (91,4%), and 74 were civilians, who were transported in 17 missions, and 81,1% of which were categorized as urgent. Niger led the list of original countries, with 191 evacuated patients. 76,1% of requests came from Italy and Germany. Airbus A310 was the most used aircraft (32,2%). Germany transported 222 patients of another nationality, while Spain executed eight missions and repatriated 68 cases, 58 of which were from Mali. Conclusions: COVID-19 has led to a surged number of evacuated patients inside EATC, which has proven to be a safe and effective means of transportation, even in critical cases. Spain has gained prominence since its annexation in 2015. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=COVID-19" title="COVID-19">COVID-19</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SARS-CoV-2" title=" SARS-CoV-2"> SARS-CoV-2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pandemic" title=" pandemic"> pandemic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aviation" title=" aviation"> aviation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Spain" title=" Spain"> Spain</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156516/impact-of-covid-19-pandemic-in-the-european-air-transport-command-during-2020-2021" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156516.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">154</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> High Pressure Multiphase Flow Experiments: The Impact of Pressure on Flow Patterns Using an X-Ray Tomography Visualisation System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandy%20Black">Sandy Black</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Calum%20McLaughlin"> Calum McLaughlin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Pranzitelli"> Alessandro Pranzitelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marc%20Laing"> Marc Laing</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Multiphase flow structures of two-phase multicomponent fluids were experimentally investigated in a large diameter high-pressure pipeline up to 130 bar at TÜV SÜD’s National Engineering Laboratory Advanced Multiphase Facility. One of the main objectives of the experimental test campaign was to evaluate the impact of pressure on multiphase flow patterns as much of the existing information is based on low-pressure measurements. The experiments were performed in a horizontal and vertical orientation in both 4-inch and 6-inch pipework using nitrogen, ExxsolTM D140 oil, and a 6% aqueous solution of NaCl at incremental pressures from 10 bar to 130 bar. To visualise the detailed structure of the flow of the entire cross-section of the pipe, a fast response X-ray tomography system was used. A wide range of superficial velocities from 0.6 m/s to 24.0 m/s for gas and 0.04 m/s and 6.48 m/s for liquid was examined to evaluate different flow regimes. The results illustrated the suppression of instabilities between the gas and the liquid at the measurement location and that intermittent or slug flow was observed less frequently as the pressure was increased. CFD modellings of low and high-pressure simulations were able to successfully predict the likelihood of intermittent flow; however, further tuning is necessary to predict the slugging frequency. The dataset generated is unique as limited datasets exist above 100 bar and is of considerable value to multiphase flow specialists and numerical modellers. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computational%20fluid%20dynamics" title="computational fluid dynamics">computational fluid dynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20pressure" title=" high pressure"> high pressure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiphase" title=" multiphase"> multiphase</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=X-ray%20tomography" title=" X-ray tomography"> X-ray tomography</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133117/high-pressure-multiphase-flow-experiments-the-impact-of-pressure-on-flow-patterns-using-an-x-ray-tomography-visualisation-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133117.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">143</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">49</span> Healing in Lourdes: Qualitative Research with Pilgrims and Their Carers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emmylou%20Rahtz">Emmylou Rahtz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sarah%20Goldingay"> Sarah Goldingay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Warber"> Sara Warber</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ann%20Arbor"> Ann Arbor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paul%20Dieppe"> Paul Dieppe</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Introduction: Lourdes is a Catholic, Marian healing venue in South West France. Many miraculous cures have been attributed to visits there. In addition, many visitors seem to experience improvements in health and wellbeing, in the absence of a cure of disease. We wanted to investigate that phenomenon. Methods: We spent 10 days in Lourdes in 2017, carrying out ethnographic research, talking to many visitors, and carrying out formal, recorded interviews with several pilgrims, doctors, nurses, helpers, and priests. Results: Profound experiences and improvements in health and wellbeing were commonly reported. A number of ‘noetic’ experiences were also described. The paper will illustrate these phenomena. In addition, many participants in the research talked about why being in Lourdes was so beneficial to them. The community spirit, ethos of prayer, flow, synchronicity, and ability to find new meaning for life’s ills were cited as likely reasons. Conclusions: We believe that the ‘real miracle’ of Lourdes is the fact that of the many hundreds of thousands of people who go there each year, many find great benefit in health and wellbeing. It is likely that this is due to the ethos of the place, the community spirit, non-judgmental approach and loving acceptance of all aspects of humanity. The nanochannel drug delivery system (nDS), a membrane fabricated with high precision silicon techniques, capable of zero-order release of drugs by exploiting diffusion transport at the nanoscale originated from the interactions between molecules with nanochannel surfaces, showed the flexibility of the sustained release in vitro and in vivo, over periods of time ranging from weeks to months. To improve the implantable bio nanotechnology, in order to create a system that possesses the key features for achieve the suitable release of therapeutics, the next generation of nDS has been created. Platinum electrodes are integrated by e-beam deposition onto both surfaces of the membrane allowing low voltage (<2 V) and active temporal control of drug release through modulation of electrostatic potentials at the inlet and outlet of the membrane’s fluidic channels. Hence, a tunable administration of drugs is ensured from the nanochannel drug delivery system. The membrane will be incorporated into a peek implantable capsule, which will include drug reservoir, control hardware and RF system to allow suitable therapeutic regimens in real-time. Therefore, this new nanotechnology offers tremendous potential solutions to manage chronic disease such as cancer, heart disease, circadian dysfunction, pain and stress. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanochannel%20membrane" title="nanochannel membrane">nanochannel membrane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drug%20delivery" title=" drug delivery"> drug delivery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tunable%20release" title=" tunable release"> tunable release</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personalized%20administration" title=" personalized administration"> personalized administration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanoscale%20transport" title=" nanoscale transport"> nanoscale transport</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biomems" title=" biomems"> biomems</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/15827/tunable-control-of-therapeutics-release-from-the-nanochannel-delivery-system-nds" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/15827.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">315</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> Women Retelling the Iranian Revolution: A Comparative Study of Novelists Maryam Madjidi and Negar Djavadi </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Giardino">Alessandro Giardino</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Iranian Revolution has been the object of numberless historical and semi-fictional accounts, often providing a monolithic perspective on the events, due to the westerner positioning of those recounting them. Against this tradition, two contemporary French-Iranian novels "Disoriental" (2016) by Negar Djavadi and "Marx and The Doll" (2017) by Maryam Madjidi have offered readers a female-oriented and interestingly layered representation of the Iranian Revolution, hence addressing the responsibilities and misconceptions of Western countries. Furthermore, these two women writers have shed light on the disenchantment of the Iranian intellectual class vis-à-vis the foundation of the Islamic Republic, by particularly focusing on the deterioration of women’s rights, as well as the repression of political, ethnical, religious and sexual minorities. By a psycholinguistic and semasiological analysis of the two novels by Djavadi and Madjidi, this essay will focus on alternative accounts of the revolution in order to reflect upon the role of intersectional literature to the understanding of history. More specifically, as both women, refugees, and bi-cultural writers, Djavadi and Madjidi unearthed moments and figures of the revolution which had disappeared from the prevalent narrative. In doing so, however, these two writers resorted to entirely opposite styles of writing that, it will be argued, stem from different types of female resistance. In defining these two approaches as a "narrative resistance" and a "photographic resistance," the essay will elucidate the dependence of these writers’ language on generational and psychological factors, but it will also stir a reflection on their different communicative strategies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iranian%20revolution" title="Iranian revolution">Iranian revolution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=French-Iranian" title=" French-Iranian"> French-Iranian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intersectionality" title=" intersectionality"> intersectionality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literature" title=" literature"> literature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women%20writers" title=" women writers"> women writers</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110463/women-retelling-the-iranian-revolution-a-comparative-study-of-novelists-maryam-madjidi-and-negar-djavadi" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110463.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">158</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">46</span> Phytochemical Evaluation and In-Vitro Antibacterial Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Moroccan Lavandula x Intermedia Leaves and Flowers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jamila%20Fliou">Jamila Fliou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Federica%20Spinola"> Federica Spinola</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ouassima%20Riffi"> Ouassima Riffi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asmaa%20Zriouel"> Asmaa Zriouel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Amechrouq"> Ali Amechrouq</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luca%20Nalbone"> Luca Nalbone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Giuffrida"> Alessandro Giuffrida</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Filippo%20Giarratana"> Filippo Giarratana</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study performed a preliminary evaluation of the phytochemical composition and in vitro antibacterial activity of ethanolic extracts of Lavandula x intermedia leaves and flowers collected in the Fez-Meknes region of Morocco. Phytochemical analyses comprised qualitative colourimetric determinations of alkaloids, anthraquinones, and terpenes and quantitative analysis of total polyphenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins by UV spectrophotometer. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by determining minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against different ATCC bacterial strains. The phytochemical analysis showed a high amount of total polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins in the leaf extract and a higher amount of terpenes based on colourimetric reaction than the flower extract. A positive colourimetric reaction for alkaloids and anthraquinones was detected for both extracts. The antibacterial activity of leaves and flower extract was not different against Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains (p<0.05). The results of the present study suggest the possible use of ethanolic extracts of L. x intermedia collected in the Fez-Meknes region of Morocco as a natural agent against bacterial pathogens. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antimicrobial%20activity" title="antimicrobial activity">antimicrobial activity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lavandula%20spp." title=" Lavandula spp."> Lavandula spp.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lavender" title=" lavender"> lavender</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lavandin" title=" lavandin"> lavandin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UV%20spectrophotometric%20analysis" title=" UV spectrophotometric analysis"> UV spectrophotometric analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176476/phytochemical-evaluation-and-in-vitro-antibacterial-activity-of-ethanolic-extracts-of-moroccan-lavandula-x-intermedia-leaves-and-flowers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176476.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">68</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> Theatrical Architecture in Bologna at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century: The Renaissance of Modernissimo Cinema</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giorgia%20Predari">Giorgia Predari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Riccardo%20Gulli"> Riccardo Gulli</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The paper describes the history and the stylistic choices adopted in the construction of Palazzo Ronzani in Bologna, which was the first building to rise after the heavy demolitions carried out in the historical center of the city at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1910, the local administration adopted a detailed plan to change the aspect of the city, as it was already happening in the main European capitals. In this context, starting from 1911, the architect and scenographer Gualtiero Pontoni designed for Alessandro Ronzani -the owner of a well-known Bolognese beer company- his Palazzo, which is listed among the first multifunctional buildings in Bologna, containing offices, commercial activities, and entertainment spaces. In an area of about 2000 m², the architect was able to propose a theatre with a capacity of 2000 seats at the basement, shops, a cafè-chantant and a restaurant on the ground floor, clubs, studios and commercial stores on the mezzanine and the first plan, and a hotel on the upper floors. The whole core of the building, at the underground levels, consisted of a reinforced concrete frame (one of the first examples of this type of construction in the city), which allowed the hall to have a free span of 11 x 12 meters, and a height of about 9 meters. Used until 2007 as a cinema, the hall has remained then in disuse for almost 10 years, but now an important functional restoration project with a strong architectural and scenographic value is taking place. It will bring the spaces back to the original geometries, in a historical and artistic condition inspired by the styles of the early Twentieth century. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Modernissimo" title="Modernissimo">Modernissimo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Palazzo%20Ronzani" title=" Palazzo Ronzani"> Palazzo Ronzani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=liberty" title=" liberty"> liberty</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bologna" title=" Bologna"> Bologna</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109407/theatrical-architecture-in-bologna-at-the-beginning-of-the-twentieth-century-the-renaissance-of-modernissimo-cinema" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109407.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">121</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">44</span> Evaluating the Potential of Microwave Treatment as a Rock Pre-Conditioning Method in Achieving a More Sustainable Mining</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adel%20Ahmadi%20Hosseini">Adel Ahmadi Hosseini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fatemeh%20Tavanaei"> Fatemeh Tavanaei</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Navarra"> Alessandro Navarra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ferri%20Hassani"> Ferri Hassani</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Mining engineering, as a part of geoscience, must address modern concerns. Traditional mining methods incorporate drill and blast technologies, which are followed by different issues, including excessive noise, vibration, air pollution, and safety hazards. Over the past two decades, mining engineers have sought alternative solutions to move from drill and blast to continuous methods to prevent such issues and improve sustainability in mining. Among the suggested methods, microwave treatment has shown promising results by creating micro/macro cracks in the rock structure prior to the operations. This research utilizes an energy-based analysis methodology to evaluate the efficiency of the microwave treatment in improving mining operations. The data analysis shows that increasing the input microwave energy dosage intensifies the rock damage. However, this approach can decrease the energy efficiency of the method by more than 50% in some cases. In this study, rock samples were treated with three power levels (3 kW, 7 kW, and 12 kW) and two energy dosages (20 kWh/t and 50 kWh/t), resulting in six conditions. To evaluate the impact of microwave treatment on the geomechanical behavior of the rocks, Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) tests were conducted on the microwave-treated samples, yielding stress-strain curves. Using the stress-strain curves, the effect of the different powers and energy dosages of microwaves are discussed. This research shows the potential of using microwave treatment to lead the industry to more sustainable mining. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microwave%20treatment" title="microwave treatment">microwave treatment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microwave%20energy%20dosage" title=" microwave energy dosage"> microwave energy dosage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sustainable%20mining" title=" sustainable mining"> sustainable mining</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rock%20fragmentation" title=" rock fragmentation"> rock fragmentation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186898/evaluating-the-potential-of-microwave-treatment-as-a-rock-pre-conditioning-method-in-achieving-a-more-sustainable-mining" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186898.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">41</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">43</span> Understanding Retail Benefits Trade-offs of Dynamic Expiration Dates (DED) Associated with Food Waste</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Junzhang%20Wu">Junzhang Wu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yifeng%20Zou"> Yifeng Zou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Manzardo"> Alessandro Manzardo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonio%20Scipioni"> Antonio Scipioni</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Dynamic expiration dates (DEDs) play an essential role in reducing food waste in the context of the sustainable cold chain and food system. However, it is unknown for the trades-off in retail benefits when setting an expiration date on fresh food products. This study aims to develop a multi-dimensional decision-making model that integrates DEDs with food waste based on wireless sensor network technology. The model considers the initial quality of fresh food and the change rate of food quality with the storage temperature as cross-independent variables to identify the potential impacts of food waste in retail by applying s DEDs system. The results show that retail benefits from the DEDs system depend on each scenario despite its advanced technology. In the DEDs, the storage temperature of the retail shelf leads to the food waste rate, followed by the change rate of food quality and the initial quality of food products. We found that the DEDs system could reduce food waste when food products are stored at lower temperature areas. Besides, the potential of food savings in an extended replenishment cycle is significantly more advantageous than the fixed expiration dates (FEDs). On the other hand, the information-sharing approach of the DEDs system is relatively limited in improving sustainable assessment performance of food waste in retail and even misleads consumers’ choices. The research provides a comprehensive understanding to support the techno-economic choice of the DEDs associated with food waste in retail. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dynamic%20expiry%20dates%20%28DEDs%29" title="dynamic expiry dates (DEDs)">dynamic expiry dates (DEDs)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=food%20waste" title=" food waste"> food waste</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=retail%20benefits" title=" retail benefits"> retail benefits</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fixed%20expiration%20dates%20%28FEDs%29" title=" fixed expiration dates (FEDs)"> fixed expiration dates (FEDs)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144201/understanding-retail-benefits-trade-offs-of-dynamic-expiration-dates-ded-associated-with-food-waste" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144201.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">114</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">42</span> Faster Pedestrian Recognition Using Deformable Part Models</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Preziosi">Alessandro Preziosi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonio%20Prioletti"> Antonio Prioletti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luca%20Castangia"> Luca Castangia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Deformable part models achieve high precision in pedestrian recognition, but all publicly available implementations are too slow for real-time applications. We implemented a deformable part model algorithm fast enough for real-time use by exploiting information about the camera position and orientation. This implementation is both faster and more precise than alternative DPM implementations. These results are obtained by computing convolutions in the frequency domain and using lookup tables to speed up feature computation. This approach is almost an order of magnitude faster than the reference DPM implementation, with no loss in precision. Knowing the position of the camera with respect to horizon it is also possible prune many hypotheses based on their size and location. The range of acceptable sizes and positions is set by looking at the statistical distribution of bounding boxes in labelled images. With this approach it is not needed to compute the entire feature pyramid: for example higher resolution features are only needed near the horizon. This results in an increase in mean average precision of 5% and an increase in speed by a factor of two. Furthermore, to reduce misdetections involving small pedestrians near the horizon, input images are supersampled near the horizon. Supersampling the image at 1.5 times the original scale, results in an increase in precision of about 4%. The implementation was tested against the public KITTI dataset, obtaining an 8% improvement in mean average precision over the best performing DPM-based method. By allowing for a small loss in precision computational time can be easily brought down to our target of 100ms per image, reaching a solution that is faster and still more precise than all publicly available DPM implementations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomous%20vehicles" title="autonomous vehicles">autonomous vehicles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deformable%20part%20model" title=" deformable part model"> deformable part model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dpm" title=" dpm"> dpm</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pedestrian%20detection" title=" pedestrian detection"> pedestrian detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=real%20time" title=" real time"> real time</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51665/faster-pedestrian-recognition-using-deformable-part-models" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51665.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">281</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">41</span> Theoretical Analysis and Design Consideration of Screened Heat Pipes for Low-Medium Concentration Solar Receivers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Davoud%20Jafari">Davoud Jafari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paolo%20Di%20Marco"> Paolo Di Marco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Franco"> Alessandro Franco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sauro%20Filippeschi"> Sauro Filippeschi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper summarizes the results of an investigation into the heat pipe heat transfer for solar collector applications. The study aims to show the feasibility of a concentrating solar collector, which is coupled with a heat pipe. Particular emphasis is placed on the capillary and boiling limits in capillary porous structures, with different mesh numbers and wick thicknesses. A mathematical model of a cylindrical heat pipe is applied to study its behaviour when it is exposed to higher heat input at the evaporator. The steady state analytical model includes two-dimensional heat conduction in the HP’s wall, the liquid flow in the wick and vapor hydrodynamics. A sensitivity analysis was conducted by considering different design criteria and working conditions. Different wicks (mesh 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and, 300), different porosities (0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 0.9) with different wick thicknesses (0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mm) are analyzed with water as a working fluid. Results show that it is possible to improve heat transfer capability (HTC) of a HP by selecting the appropriate wick thickness, the effective pore radius, and lengths for a given HP configuration, and there exist optimal design criteria (optimal thick, evaporator adiabatic and condenser sections). It is shown that the boiling and wicking limits are connected and occurs in dependence on each other. As different parts of the HP external surface collect different fractions of the total incoming insolation, the analysis of non-uniform heat flux distribution indicates that peak heat flux is not affecting parameter. The parametric investigations are aimed to determine working limits and thermal performance of HP for medium temperature SC application. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=screened%20heat%20pipes" title="screened heat pipes">screened heat pipes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=analytical%20model" title=" analytical model"> analytical model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=boiling%20and%20capillary%20limits" title=" boiling and capillary limits"> boiling and capillary limits</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=concentrating%20collector" title=" concentrating collector"> concentrating collector</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17286/theoretical-analysis-and-design-consideration-of-screened-heat-pipes-for-low-medium-concentration-solar-receivers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/17286.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">560</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">40</span> Acute Cartilage Defects of the Knee Treated With Chondral Restoration Procedures and Patellofemoral Stabilisation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20Scanlon">John Scanlon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antony%20Raymond"> Antony Raymond</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Randeep%20Aujla"> Randeep Aujla</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20D%E2%80%99Alessandro"> Peter D’Alessandro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Satyen%20Gohil"> Satyen Gohil</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: The incidence of significant acute chondral injuries with patella dislocation is around 10-15%. It is accepted that chondral procedures should only be performed in the presence of joint stability Methods:Patients were identified from surgeon/hospital logs. Patient demographics, lesion size and location, surgical procedure, patient reported outcome measures, post-operative MR imaging, and complications were recorded. PROMs and patient satisfaction was obtained. Results:20 knees (18 patients) were included. Mean age was 18.6 years (range; 11-39), and the mean follow-up was 16.6 months (range; 2-70). The defect locations were the lateral femoral condyle (9/20; 45%), patella (9/20; 45%), medial femoral condyle (1/20; 5%) and the trochlea (1/20; 5%). The mean defect size was 2.6cm2. Twelve knees were treated with cartilage fixation, 5 with microfracture, and 3 with OATS. At follow up, the overall mean Lysholm score was 77.4 (± 17.1), with no chondral regenerative procedure being statistically superior. There was no difference in Lysholm scores between those patients having acute medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction versus medial soft tissue plication (p=0.59). Five (25%) knees required re-operation (one arthroscopic arthrolysis; one patella chondroplasty; two removal of loose bodies; one implant adjustment). Overall, 90% responded as being satisfied with surgery. Conclusion: Our aggressive pathway to identify and treat acute cartilage defects with early operative intervention and patella stabilisation has shown high rates of satisfaction and Lysholm scores. The full range of chondral restoration options should be considered by surgeons managing these patients. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=patella%20dislocation" title="patella dislocation">patella dislocation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chondral%20restoration" title=" chondral restoration"> chondral restoration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=knee" title=" knee"> knee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=patella%20stabilisation" title=" patella stabilisation"> patella stabilisation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/149232/acute-cartilage-defects-of-the-knee-treated-with-chondral-restoration-procedures-and-patellofemoral-stabilisation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/149232.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">128</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> Molecularly Imprinted Nanoparticles (MIP NPs) as Non-Animal Antibodies Substitutes for Detection of Viruses</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Poma">Alessandro Poma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kal%20Karim"> Kal Karim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sergey%20Piletsky"> Sergey Piletsky</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giuseppe%20Battaglia"> Giuseppe Battaglia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The recent increasing emergency threat to public health of infectious influenza diseases has prompted interest in the detection of avian influenza virus (AIV) H5N1 in humans as well as animals. A variety of technologies for diagnosing AIV infection have been developed. However, various disadvantages (costs, lengthy analyses, and need for high-containment facilities) make these methods less than ideal in their practical application. Molecularly Imprinted Polymeric Nanoparticles (MIP NPs) are suitable to overcome these limitations by having high affinity, selectivity, versatility, scalability and cost-effectiveness with the versatility of post-modification (labeling – fluorescent, magnetic, optical) opening the way to the potential introduction of improved diagnostic tests capable of providing rapid differential diagnosis. Here we present our first results in the production and testing of MIP NPs for the detection of AIV H5N1. Recent developments in the solid-phase synthesis of MIP NPs mean that for the first time a reliable supply of ‘soluble’ synthetic antibodies can be made available for testing as potential biological or diagnostic active molecules. The MIP NPs have the potential to detect viruses that are widely circulating in farm animals and indeed humans. Early and accurate identification of the infectious agent will expedite appropriate control measures. Thus, diagnosis at an early stage of infection of a herd or flock or individual maximizes the efficiency with which containment, prevention and possibly treatment strategies can be implemented. More importantly, substantiating the practicability’s of these novel reagents should lead to an initial reduction and eventually to a potential total replacement of animals, both large and small, to raise such specific serological materials. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=influenza%20virus" title="influenza virus">influenza virus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=molecular%20imprinting" title=" molecular imprinting"> molecular imprinting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanoparticles" title=" nanoparticles"> nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polymers" title=" polymers"> polymers</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29566/molecularly-imprinted-nanoparticles-mip-nps-as-non-animal-antibodies-substitutes-for-detection-of-viruses" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29566.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">362</span> </span> </div> </div> <ul class="pagination"> <li class="page-item disabled"><span class="page-link">&lsaquo;</span></li> <li class="page-item active"><span class="page-link">1</span></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Marzucchini&amp;page=2">2</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Marzucchini&amp;page=3">3</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alessandro%20Marzucchini&amp;page=2" rel="next">&rsaquo;</a></li> </ul> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
