In the context of ancient Israel, these creatures were often associated with uncleanliness due to their proximity to the ground and their scavenging nature. The Hebrew term used here can encompass a variety of creatures, including reptiles and insects. This prohibition is part of the broader Levitical laws that distinguish between clean and unclean animals, which were given to the Israelites to maintain ritual purity and to set them apart from other nations. The emphasis on creatures that move along the ground highlights the importance of avoiding contact with what is considered impure or defiling.
is detestable;
The term "detestable" is a strong expression indicating that these creatures are considered abominable or loathsome. This language underscores the severity with which God views the consumption of such animals. The use of this term is consistent with other Levitical laws that categorize certain practices and items as detestable, often because they are associated with pagan rituals or practices. The detestability of these creatures is not merely a matter of personal preference but is rooted in divine command, reflecting God's holiness and the call for His people to be holy as well.
it must not be eaten.
This command is clear and unequivocal, leaving no room for exceptions. The prohibition against eating these creatures is part of the dietary laws given to the Israelites, which served multiple purposes: promoting health, ensuring ritual purity, and symbolizing the separation of God's people from the surrounding nations. These dietary restrictions also foreshadow the spiritual purity required of believers, pointing to the ultimate fulfillment in Christ, who declared all foods clean (Mark 7:18-19) and emphasized the importance of inner purity over external observance. The command not to eat these creatures is a reminder of the obedience and reverence required in following God's laws.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The author of Leviticus, who received the laws from God to instruct the Israelites.

2. Israelites
The recipients of the Levitical laws, including dietary restrictions, as part of their covenant relationship with God.

3. Mount Sinai
The location where God delivered the laws to Moses, including the dietary laws found in Leviticus.

4. The Wilderness
The setting where the Israelites lived and received these laws during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.
Teaching Points
Understanding Holiness
The dietary laws in Leviticus were part of God's call for Israel to be a holy nation, set apart from other peoples. From the fact that the creeping things here proscribed are expressly described as "creeping upon the earth," the administrators of the law during the second Temple concluded that the small worms which do not creep upon the earth do not come within the operation of this prohibition. Hence worms bred in vegetables, fruit, and certain kinds of food are permitted. Thus the worms in figs, dates, and berries, the mites in peas, beans, and lentils, the maggots in cheese, the insects found in the flesh and under the skin of fishes, are not proscribed, and only when they quit the object wherein they have been generated, and creep about upon the ground, are they forbidden. Hence the Chaldee Version of Jonathan renders the passage "and every creeping thing that flieth is unclean unto you" (Deuteronomy 14:19) by "and all bees and wasps, and all worms of vegetables and of pulse which leave the objects of food and fly like birds, are unclean unto you."

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 41-43. -
