In the context of Isaiah, it often refers to a future event when God will act decisively. It is a reminder of God's sovereignty over time and history.
the Lord will use a razor
The imagery of a razor suggests humiliation and disgrace. In ancient times, shaving was often associated with shame or mourning. This metaphor indicates that God will use an instrument of judgment to bring about His purposes.
hired from beyond the Euphrates
The Euphrates River was a significant geographical boundary, representing the edge of the known world for the Israelites. The phrase implies that God will bring an external force, a foreign power, to execute His judgment. This highlights God's control over all nations and His ability to use them for His purposes.
the king of Assyria
Assyria was a dominant empire during Isaiah's time, known for its military might and brutality. The mention of the king of Assyria as God's instrument underscores the theme of God using even pagan nations to accomplish His will. Historically, Assyria was a threat to Israel and Judah, and its involvement fulfills the prophecy of judgment against them.
to shave your head and the hair of your legs
Shaving the head and body hair was a sign of extreme humiliation and subjugation. In the cultural context, it symbolized the stripping away of dignity and identity. This act represents the complete and utter defeat that Judah would face at the hands of Assyria.
and to remove your beard as well
In ancient Near Eastern culture, a beard was a symbol of manhood and honor. Removing it was a profound disgrace. This phrase emphasizes the totality of the humiliation and the depth of the judgment that would come upon the people. It serves as a warning of the consequences of turning away from God.

This passage, while specific to the historical context of Isaiah's time, also serves as a broader reminder of God's sovereignty and the certainty of His judgment against sin. It foreshadows the ultimate deliverance and restoration that would come through Jesus Christ, who bore the shame and judgment on behalf of humanity.
Persons / Places / Events
1. The Lord
The sovereign God of Israel, who orchestrates events for His purposes.

2. The King of Assyria
A foreign ruler used by God as an instrument of judgment against Israel.

3. Euphrates
A major river in the ancient Near East, symbolizing the region from which Assyria would come.

4. Judah
The southern kingdom of Israel, facing the threat of Assyrian invasion.

5. Isaiah
The prophet delivering God's message to King Ahaz and the people of Judah.
Teaching Points
God's Sovereignty Over Nations
God uses even foreign powers to accomplish His purposes, demonstrating His control over all nations.

Judgment and Humiliation
The act of shaving symbolizes humiliation and judgment, reminding us of the consequences of turning away from God.

Trust in God's Plan
Despite the dire circumstances, believers are called to trust in God's ultimate plan and His ability to bring about His purposes.

Cultural and Historical Context
Understanding the cultural significance of shaving in ancient Israel helps us grasp the depth of the prophecy's impact.

Repentance and Restoration
God's use of Assyria as a tool of judgment serves as a call to repentance, with the hope of eventual restoration for those who turn back to Him.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Isaiah 7

What are the Bible's teachings on shaving?

2 Kings 20:7: Why was a simple poultice of figs sufficient to cure a fatal illness if it was truly life-threatening?

Why does Isaiah 20:1 reference Sargon II of Assyria if some scholars argue that the historical record of his campaign against Ashdod is unclear or contradicts biblical chronology?

Jeremiah 51:7 calls Babylon a 'golden cup' in God's hand; if God used Babylon, why should the nation be punished?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(20) Shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired.--Better, "with the razor." The words find a parallel in the "made him naked" of 2Chronicles 28:19. The term "hired" applies to the tribute which Ahaz was about to pay to Tilgath-pilneser. He thought that he was securing an ally: he was but hiring a razor (there is, perhaps, the implied thought that the razor is in other hands than his) that should sweep away all the signs of strength, and leave him an open shame and scorn to all who looked on him. (2Samuel 10:4). From head to foot, not sparing even the beard, to maltreat which was the last extreme of Oriental outrage, he and his kingdom should be laid bare and naked to his enemies. Possibly there may be an allusive reference (Kay) to Leviticus 14:9. The nation, leprous in its guilt (Isaiah 1:6), needs the treatment which was prescribed for the leper.
(21:22) A man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep . . .--Better, two ewes. Not only should cultivation cease, but the flocks and herds that had before been counted by hundreds or thousands should be counted now by units, two ewes and a heifer for a man's whole stock, and yet (we note the prophet's irony once more in the use of the word "abundance") even that should be enough for a population reduced in proportion. There should be "milk and honey" for the scattered remnant. They should have that, and nothing but that, to eat, ad nauseam usque. The words are grouped together with a grim irony as reminding men of the proverbial words of praise which spoke of Canaan as "a land of milk and honey" (Exodus 3:17). . . .
Pulpit Commentary
Verse 20. - Shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired; rather, with the hired razor; i.e. the razor that Ahaz will have hired (2 Kings 16:8).
