His most famous creation was Superman, a character he created in collaboration with his friend Joe Shuster.

Jerome Siegel was born on October 17, 1914, in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents were both Jewish immigrants from Russian Lithuania. His father, Mikhail Iankel Segalovich and his mother Sora Meita Khaikels both formally changed their names when they came to America to make a fresh start and raise their family. His father became Michael Siegel and his mother, Sarah Fine. Jerry was the youngest in the family of 6 children, with 3 older sisters and 2 older brothers ahead of him in age. His father was a tailor and owned a clothing store in Cleveland.

In 1928, Jerry's family moved to Glenville on the east side of Cleveland. It was a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, and it was here in school that Jerry met Joe Shuster. The two of them had much in common: their love of science fiction, adventure books, and movies. They became best friends and inseperable. A few years later, in 1932, Jerry's father Michael was attacked by a shoplifter and suffered a fatal heart attack. He died while Jerry was only 17 years old.

After graduating from High School, he helped to support his family and took on what work he could find, although this was the time of the Great Depression. He worked a number of delivery jobs, and at the same time, he was seeking publishers for comic book stories that he and Joe put together. By 1935, he and Joe were selling stories to National Allied Publications, a company that would become DC Comics. The pair had come up with the concept of Superman as far back as 1933, and they had hoped to sell the idea to a syndicated comic strip, but no one was buying at the time. So they reluctantly turned to comic books, and in March 1938 they sold their entire rights to Superman to Detective Comics for $130. While this was a solid amount of money for what they sold at the time, they had no idea what a gold mine Superman would turn into. They soon regretted their decision, but it was too late.

Siegel and Shuster may not have been paid royalties, but DC did provide them with a full-time writing job, writing for Superman and various other DC properties. This provided Jerry and Joe with a steady income and allowed them to help out their families and eventually purchase a home and even raise a family. On June 18, 1939 Jerry Siegel was married to Bella Lifshitz and they began looking for a home and the best time to start raising a family together. Jerry bought a house in the University Heights area and even bought a car. Sadly, it was in August 1941 that his mother Sarah passed away from a heart attack.

By 1943, World War II was happening everywhere, and on June 28, 1943, Jerry was drafted into the Army. They initially trained him to be an airplane mechanic, but he ended up in Honolulu writing for the Stars and Stripes paper. He wrote columns and did quite a bit of comedy writing. In January 1944, his first child was born, a son named Michael Siegel. Jerry was discharged from the service in January 1946, and his wife became pregnant with their second child. In November they had a new baby boy in the family. Sadly, he was stillborn and they had to bury their child. It appeared that as his personal life became a challenge and he and his wife were failing to get along, his professional life also began to suffer. DC Comics published a new character - Superboy. This character was based on a story that Siegel and Shuster had submitted to DC Comics awhile back, but DC had chosen not to buy at the time. With their failure to compensate Siegel and Shuster as well as cutting them out of the royalties for Superman, they hired an attorney who helped them to sue DC Comics for the rights for Superman, Superboy, and damages for their failure to be properly compensated. DC and Siegel/Shuster settled out of court in 1947 for about $94,000, which would be a bit over a million dollars by today's standards. As the case was wrapping up, so was his marriage to Bella. In 1948, they finalized their divorce, and it was reported that Jerry had about $29,000 after court fees at the time of his divorce. It was a bitter divorce, and it would cause a lifetime estrangement with both his ex-wife and only living son.

Laster in 1948, Jerry soon married model Jolan "Joanne" Kovacs. Jerry and Joanne had met years ago in 1935, when Joanne modeled for Jerry and Joe when they were trying to find the right look for Superman's love interest, Lois Lane. By 1951, Jerry and Joanne had a daughter, their only child together. Jerry's career struggled after he left DC Comics and by 1959, they were living in poverty in a one-bedroom apartment on Long Island. Joanne convinced him to ask DC for a job, and they accepted him back. From 1959 to 1965, he wrote stories for Superman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, and others. He created or co-created a number of characters during his tenure that ultimately belonged solely to DC Comics, and like other writers, was under the eye of his editors.

In 1966 it was discovered by DC Comics that Siegel and Shuster were planning a second lawsuit against DC Comics for the rights to Superman, so DC stopped providing him with work. Siegel and Shuster lost that lawsuit and Jerry struggled to find work for many years to come. His family fell into hard times and only when in 1975 when Jerry found out that Warner Brothers was planning a Superman movie did he appeal to the press about his situation. Not only did the press get the attention of DC Comics and Warner Brothers, but a settlement was made, providing Jerry and his family a stipend of $20,000 per year for life, provided he never contest the rights to Superman again. In later years, this amount was increased to $30,000.

Jerry continued to make occasional appearances at conventions, signing autographs and taking pictures with fans.
