And he says to them, “Behold the man!” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Therefore when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify! Crucify!”</p><p class="reg"> Pilate says to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify <i>Him</i>, for I find no guilt in Him.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to the law He ought to die, because He made Himself <i>the</i> Son of God.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Therefore when Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he went into the Praetorium again, and he says to Jesus, “Where are You from?”</p><p class="reg"> But Jesus did not give him an answer. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate says to Him, “Do You not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Jesus answered him, <span class="red">“You would have no authority over Me, if it were not given to you from above. Because of this, the <i>one</i> having delivered Me up to you has greater sin.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Out of this, Pilate was seeking to release Him; but the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this <i>man</i>, you are not a friend of Caesar. Everyone making himself a king speaks against Caesar.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate, having heard these words, brought Jesus out and sat down upon <i>the</i> judgment seat at a place called <i>The</i> Stone Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gabbatha. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now it was the Day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he says to the Jews, “Behold your king!” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So they cried out, “Away with Him, away! Crucify Him!”</p><p class="reg"> Pilate says to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”</p><p class="reg"> The chief priests answered, “We have no king except Caesar.” </p><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(Psalms 22:1-31; 69:1-36; Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So then, he delivered Him to them, that He might be crucified. Therefore they took Jesus. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And bearing <i>His</i> own cross, He went out to the <i>place</i> called <i>the</i> Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, on this side and on that side, and Jesus in between. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Pilate also wrote a title and put <i>it</i> on the cross. And it was written,</p><p class="reg"><div class="inscrip"> Jesus of Nazareth, <br /> the King of the Jews.</div> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, <i>and</i> in Greek. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Therefore the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that He said, <span class="red">‘I am King of the Jews.’</span>” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then the soldiers, when they crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top all throughout. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Therefore they said to one another, “Let us not tear it up, but let us cast lots for it, whose it will be,” that Scripture might be fulfilled that said:</p><p class="indent1stline">“They divided My garments among them,</p><p class="indent2"> and for My clothing they cast a lot.”<span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="Psalm 22:18">a</a></span></p><p class="reg"> So indeed the soldiers did these things. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now His mother, and the sister of His mother, Mary the <i>wife</i> of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene, had been standing by the cross of Jesus. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Therefore Jesus, having seen <i>His</i> mother and the disciple whom He loved standing by, says to <i>His</i> mother, <span class="red">“Woman, behold, your son.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then He says to the disciple, <span class="red">“Behold, your mother.”</span> And from that hour the disciple took her to the own. </p><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Psalm 22:1-31; Matthew 27:45-56; Mark 15:33-41; Luke 23:44-49)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>After this, Jesus, knowing that now all things had been accomplished, so that Scripture might be fulfilled, says, <span class="red">“I thirst.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>A vessel full of sour wine had been set <i>there</i>. So having put on a stalk of hyssop a sponge filled with sour wine, they brought it to the mouth. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Therefore when Jesus took the sour wine, He said <span class="red">“It has been finished.”</span> And having bowed the head, He yielded up the spirit. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus' Side is Pierced<br /><span class="cross">(Zechariah 12:10-14)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Therefore the Jews, because it was <i>the</i> Preparation, so that bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath—for that Sabbath was a high day—asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So the soldiers came, and indeed they broke the legs of the first, and of the other having been crucified with Him. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But having come to Jesus, when they saw Him already having been dead, they did not break His legs. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the <i>one</i> having seen has borne witness, and his testimony is true. And He knows that he is speaking truth, so that you also might believe. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>For these things took place so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one bone of Him will be broken.”<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20">b</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And again, another Scripture says: “They will look on the <i>One</i> they have pierced.”<span class="fn"><a href="#fnc" title="Zechariah 12:10">c</a></span> </p><p class="hdg">The Burial of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Isaiah 53:9-12; Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And after these things, Joseph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed through the fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave permission.
