A neurodiversity-affirming approach doesn&#039;t &quot;treat Autism&quot;. Autism is NOT a disease, a medical injury, a behavioral problem. Definition of Intervention &quot;Action taken to improve a situation, especially a medical disorder. An occasion on which a person with an addiction or other behavioral problem is confronted by a group of friends or family members in an attempt to persuade them to address the issue. Left side of poster: Presume Competence Neurodiversity Affirming Human Rights, respectful, empathetic, informed Right side of poster: The Expert Knows What&#039;s Best Neurodiversity Lite Performative, appropriate neurodiversity for $$$ Left side of poster: Neurodivergent-Affirming therapists don&#039;t treat autism (Autism Intervention). Both, Autistic lived experiences and contemporary research tell us it&#039;s unethical to write goals with outcomes for &quot;normalization&quot; through teaching/training autistic people to hide their autistic traits. (The Double Empathy Problem, Diversity in Social Intelligence, Monotropism, Autistic Masking &amp; Camouflage) Autistic people are capable of learning, growing, and developing, just like all people do when well-supported. * Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy Goals: Improve quality of life as determined by client, not the therapist. Effective and robust communication, self-determination, self-advocacy, access to supports. Informed consent and refusal of consent is provided at all times. Client&#039;s &quot;no&quot; is always respected and honored. Autistic play is authentic play. Autistic play is functional for autistic people. Research and autistic lived experiences tell us that training Autistic people to perform with Neurotypical social skills Just doesn&#039;t work. (Research &amp; Lived Experiences) Enforces masking, leading to depression, loss of identity, chronic anxiety, suicidal ideation. Is dehumanizing, demeaning, elitist, and ableist. Goals: Present neutral information for navigating social interactions, and interpreting social situations Advocacy: Teach perspective taking about differences in social communication The Double Empathy Problem Validate Autistic social diversity Train Neurotypicals to accept Autistic social differences. Right side of poster: Therapist &quot;Autism Expert&quot; who Treats Autism, performs Autism Intervention Buy my expen$ive &quot;Neurodiversity&quot; master class, handbook, video training, CEU event on how to treat Autism, or Autism Intervention/Behaviors. Led by an allistic (non-autistic) therapist who knows somebody who is autistic - a child, family member, friend, etc. who will teach you how to understand autism. Uses neurodiversity lingo &amp; the buzzwords although not always correctly. ABA is considered &quot;controversial&quot; (but not unethical, immoral, a violation of human rights) Compliance/behavioral based, treating &quot;autistic behaviors&quot; Trains/sells products for Social Skills training Therapy to reduce sensory responses through toleration, exposure, extinction. Therapy goals for play, socialization/social engagement, reduction/extinction of stimming, table &quot;readiness&quot; &quot;Learning to learn&quot;* &quot; We all have to do things we don&#039;t like.&quot; &quot; They have to function in the real world.&quot; &quot;Autistic play is authentic play,&quot; but... let&#039;s shape it and make it functional, meaningful, purposeful, imaginative, social, &quot;more fun&quot;. &quot;Respect neurodiversity&quot;, but... Teach your autistic clients how &quot;to have meaningful relationships, theory of mind, increase empathy, accept responsibility for and fix their communication breakdowns, their social awkwardness, socially engage appropriately, sit at a table or in a circle to learn, at even a young age. Reduce movement. Use their interests, hobbies, and activities as rewards for compliance or social skills training intervention. Atypical strategies for the allocation of attention including social interactions, the use of language, and the shifting of the object of attention - a central core Autistic feature. Good Therapy Practices Work with interests and passions Avoid the ableist practice of pathologizing a person&#039;s focused interests; intense focus is indispensable in various fields such as science, math, technology, music Understand that it&#039;s extremely difficult, anxiety-producing, and even frustrating for a monotropic brain to shift focus when the person is in a flow state Become part of attention tunnels, rather than focused on pulling the person out of their flow states Help maintain a sense of safety, stability, and routine Monotropic interest system: Monotropism also suggests a reason for the sensory integration difficulties found in the accounts of autistic people, as they suggest there is a ‘hyper-awareness’ of phenomena within the attentional tunnel, but hypo-sensitivity to phenomena outside of it. Also, that an interest in the social world may not occur in the early years of life. A different cognitive style: &quot; In a nutshell, monotropism is the tendency for our interests to pull us in more strongly than most people. It rests on a model of the mind as an ‘interest system’: we are all interested in many things, and our interests help direct our attention. Different interests are salient at different times. In a monotropic mind, fewer interests tend to be aroused at any time, and they attract more of our processing resources, making it harder to deal with things outside of our current attention tunnel.&quot; References: Murray, Dinah &amp; Lesser, Mike &amp; Lawson, Wendy. Drawing largely from autistic scholarship on this subject, along with research and theory from disability studies and discourse analysis, we define ableism and its realization in linguistic practices, provide a historical overview of ableist language used to describe autism, and review calls from autistic researchers and laypeople to adopt alternative ways of speaking and writing. Identity-First Versus Person-First Language Use in Autism Research: A Response to Vivanti</span><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #0c374d;">&#8220;There will not always be consensus on what autism is or how we should talk about autistic people—even among autistic people ourselves—but to ignore those autistic voices that have broken through into the academy lest they not be representative of every single autistic person is short-sighted. Linguistic framing, including the use of PFL, has material consequences for the autistic community, especially those who are non-speaking. The priority of research should be to centre autistic people (both speaking and non-speaking, and with, and without learning disabilities) in the conversation around the language used to describe autism and autistic people. If current studies are not representative enough of the entire autistic population the solution is to conduct more research.&#8221;</span><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #0c374d;">Botha, M., Hanlon, J. &amp; Williams, G.L. Comprised of ideological/rhetorical as well as material/economic infrastructure, we argue that the aic is not the myriad businesses and industries that capitalize and profit from it; rather, these constitute its epiphenomenal features. In the production of autism as commodity, the aic also simultaneously produces that commodity’s market, its consumers, and its own monopoly control of that market through production for consumption of need for, consent to, and legitimacy of interventionist logics. Within this apparatus, almost anyone can capitalize on and profit from autism. And within the aic, autistic people—their very bodies—function as the raw materials from which this industrial complex is built, even as autistic people—their very identities and selves—also become unwitting, and often unwilling, products of the aic.&#8221;</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 12pt;">In: Journal of Disability Studies in Education E-ISSN: 2588-8803 Print ISSN: 2588-879X Publisher: Brill</span><br /><a href="https://brill.com/view/journals/jdse/aop/article-10.1163-25888803-bja10008/article-10.1163-25888803-bja10008.xml"><span style="font-size: 12pt;">https://brill.com/view/journals/jdse/aop/article-10.1163-25888803-bja10008/article-10.1163-25888803-bja10008.xml</span></a></p></div></div></div></div></div></section><section class="elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bb20607 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default" data-id="bb20607" data-element_type="section"><div class="elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default"><div class="elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-8f942ae" data-id="8f942ae" data-element_type="column"><div class="elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated"><div class="elementor-element elementor-element-83aba5e elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer" data-id="83aba5e" data-element_type="widget" data-widget_type="spacer.default"><div class="elementor-widget-container"><div class="elementor-spacer"><div class="elementor-spacer-inner"></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></section><section class="elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9a87469 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default" data-id="9a87469" data-element_type="section"><div class="elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default"><div class="elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d69717c" data-id="d69717c" data-element_type="column"><div class="elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated"><div class="elementor-element elementor-element-7cd408b noselect elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor" data-id="7cd408b" data-element_type="widget" data-widget_type="text-editor.default"><div class="elementor-widget-container"><p style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: 18pt;">Disability Narratives</span></p><p><a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewpulrang/2019/12/27/ableist-narratives-that-poison-disability-policy-and-disabled-peoples-lives/?fbclid=IwAR0QnLXCQp3X50CJMHHriVXhCCslOdWvHIflMk0YN-4acMAonyVOyaoEhgo#52b905b037eb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ableist Narratives That Poison Disability Policy And Disabled People’s Lives</a><br />Pulrang, A. We dangle goodies (from candy bars to sales commissions) in front of people in the same way that we train the family pet.<br />Since its publication in 1993, this groundbreaking book has persuaded countless parents, teachers, and managers that attempts to manipulate people with incentives may seem to work in the short run, but they ultimately fail and even do lasting harm. Drawing from hundreds of studies, Kohn demonstrates that we actually do inferior work when we are enticed with money, grades, or other incentives—and are apt to lose interest in whatever we were bribed to do.<br />Promising goodies to children for good behavior, meanwhile, can never produce anything more than temporary obedience. Even praise can become a verbal bribe that gets kids hooked on our approval.<br />Rewards and punishments are two sides of the same coin—and the coin doesn’t buy much. What is needed, Kohn explains, is an alternative to both ways of controlling people. Hence, he offers practical strategies for parents, teachers, and managers to replace carrots and sticks. Seasoned with humor and familiar examples, Punished by Rewards presents an argument that is unsettling to hear but impossible to dismiss.&#8221;</p><p>Books by Julia Bascom:<br />Julia Bascom serves as Executive Director at the <a href="https://autisticadvocacy.org/about-asan/staff/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Autistic Self Advocacy Network</a>. It is the purpose of this act to ensure that a patient&#8217;s right to self-determination in health care decisions be communicated and protected. Through advance directives&#8211;the living will and the durable power of attorney&#8211;the right to accept or reject medical or surgical treatment is available to adults while competent, so that in the event that such adults become incompetent to make decisions, they would more easily continue to control decisions affecting their health care. Without advance directives and the proper adherence to such directives, former President Richard Nixon and former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis might still be alive today, in persistent vegetative states. This article examines the history of the act, its importance to each individual, the clinical, ethical and legal issues, and the role of health care professionals in effectively implementing and ensuring compliance of the PSDA.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #0c374d;"><a style="color: #0c374d;" href="https://www.americanbar.org/groups/public_education/resources/law_issues_for_consumers/patient_self_determination_act/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Law for Older Americans &#8211; Health Care Advance Directives. Whereas the deficit model portrays autistic people as ill, broken, and in need of fixing, the neurodiversity perspective portrays it as a form of human diversity with associated strengths and difficulties. The article&#8217;s discussion then shifts to presenting Schalock&#8217;s (2000) quality of life framework as a neurodiversity-compatible lens through which domains of quality of life can be viewed. The article analyzes in detail these core domains in relation to the lives of autistic adults. The author suggests that a collaborative approach between professionals/researchers and autistic adults is needed to develop meaningful solutions to these challenges, and he presents possibilities for collaboration.</span><br /><span style="font-size: 14pt; color: #0c374d;">Robertson, S.
