In the context of Thessalonica, a city in Macedonia, the gospel was a radical message that contrasted with the prevalent pagan beliefs. The phrase "not only in word" emphasizes that the message was not merely a set of teachings or doctrines but was accompanied by something more profound. This echoes 1 Corinthians 4:20, where Paul states, "For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power." The gospel's transformative power is evident in the lives of those who receive it.
but also in power
The "power" mentioned here refers to the divine power that accompanies the proclamation of the gospel. This power is often manifested through miracles, signs, and wonders, as seen in the early church (Acts 2:43). It also signifies the power to transform lives, breaking the chains of sin and bringing about spiritual rebirth. This power is a testament to the authenticity of the message and the presence of God working through the apostles.
in the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the dissemination and reception of the gospel. The Spirit empowers believers to preach boldly (Acts 1:8) and convicts the hearts of listeners (John 16:8). In Thessalonica, the Holy Spirit's presence would have been a source of comfort and assurance to the new believers, guiding them into all truth (John 16:13) and helping them to stand firm in their faith amidst persecution.
and with great conviction
"Great conviction" indicates the deep assurance and certainty with which the apostles preached. This conviction was not based on human wisdom but on the revelation and guidance of the Holy Spirit. It also reflects the apostles' personal transformation and commitment to the truth of the gospel. This conviction would have been compelling to the Thessalonians, encouraging them to embrace the message wholeheartedly.
just as you know we lived among you for your sake
Paul and his companions lived among the Thessalonians, modeling the Christian life and demonstrating the gospel's impact through their conduct. This phrase highlights the importance of integrity and authenticity in ministry. The apostles' lives were a living testimony to the truth they preached, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 2:10, where Paul states, "You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed." Their selfless dedication was for the benefit of the Thessalonians, showing the love and sacrifice inherent in the gospel message.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Paul
The apostle who wrote the letter to the Thessalonians, emphasizing the authenticity and power of the gospel message.

2. Silas and Timothy
Co-authors of the letter, who were with Paul during his missionary journey to Thessalonica.

3. Thessalonica
A major city in Macedonia where Paul, Silas, and Timothy preached the gospel and established a church.

4. The Thessalonian Church
The recipients of the letter, known for their faith and perseverance despite persecution.

5. The Holy Spirit
The third person of the Trinity, whose power and presence were evident in the delivery and reception of the gospel.
Teaching Points
The Power of the Gospel
The gospel is not merely words but is accompanied by divine power, transforming lives and hearts.

Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is essential in the proclamation and reception of the gospel, providing conviction and assurance.

Authentic Christian Living
Paul and his companions lived out their faith authentically, serving as examples for the Thessalonians and for us today.

Full Conviction
True belief in the gospel comes with full conviction, leading to a life of faith and obedience.

Community Witness
The way believers live among others can powerfully testify to the truth of the gospel.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from 1 Thessalonians 1

(1 Thess 1:5) Could the “power” accompanying the gospel be explained naturally, rather than as supernatural intervention?

What defines Christian behavior?

(1 Thess 1:4) Is there any tangible evidence supporting divine “election” beyond Paul’s assertion to the Thessalonians?

Mark 5:25-29: How could simply touching Jesus' garment medically cure a woman's long-term bleeding issue without any other intervention?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(5) "If God had not set His heart upon you, we never could have been as successful among you as we were."
Our gospel came not unto you.--Or rather, the glad tidings which we brought did not prove among you, in its action upon you.
In word only.--Comp. 1Corinthians 2:4; 1Corinthians 4:20. That by the "power," "assurance," etc., are meant the preachers' own, and not the people's, is proved by the next clause, "as ye know."
In the Holy Ghost.--The Greek here omits the definite article. In such cases attention is not so much called to the Blessed Person Himself, as to the exalted, inspired enthusiasm with which He fills us. Some restrict the epithets which here follow to the teachers, as denoting the mode in which they preached the gospel; but it is better to refer them both to the teachers and the taught. By "power" is not meant miracles, but, in contrast to "word," the power with which Paul and his companions preached, and the impression which the gospel made on the hearers. And in the Holy Ghost. Here also the reference is, not to miraculous gifts, but to the influences of the Spirit accompanying the preaching of the gospel; such was the efficacy of Paul's preaching that it proved itself to be accompanied by the operation of the Holy Ghost in the conversion of his hearers. There is here an ascent: the gospel came in power, and, what is more, it came in the Holy Ghost. And in much assurance. By "assurance" here is meant the confidence with which Paul and his fellow-workers preached the gospel to the Thessalonians, and the fullness of conviction with which the Thessalonians received it. As ye know. An appeal to their knowledge that what he now states is true. What manner of men we were among you. Alluding to the blamelessness of their behavior when in Thessalonica. For your sake; namely, that we sought not our own profit or advantage, but your spiritual good.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
because
ὅτι (hoti)
Conjunction
Strong's 3754: Neuter of hostis as conjunction; demonstrative, that; causative, because.

our
ἡμῶν (hēmōn)
Personal / Possessive Pronoun - Genitive 1st Person Plural
Strong's 1473: I, the first-person pronoun.
