Compressible axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations are used to study this physical phenomenon. Different velocities are set for plug to investigate the effect of plug movement on flow unsteadiness. Variation of mass flow rate and thrust are compared under two conditions: First, the plug is placed at different positions and flow is simulated to reach the steady state (quasi steady simulation) and second, the plug is moved with assigned velocity and flow simulation is coupled with plug movement (unsteady simulation). If plug speed is high enough and its movement time scale is at the same order of the flow time scale, variation of the mass flow rate and thrust level versus plug position demonstrate a vital discrepancy under the quasi steady and unsteady conditions. This phenomenon should be considered especially from response time viewpoints in thrusters design. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nozzle" title="nozzle">nozzle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=numerical%20study" title=" numerical study"> numerical study</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady" title=" unsteady"> unsteady</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=variable%20thrust" title=" variable thrust"> variable thrust</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1463/unsteadiness-effects-on-variable-thrust-nozzle-performance" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1463.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">349</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5264</span> Numerical Investigation of Flow Behaviour Across a Trapezoidal Bluff Body at Low Reynolds Number</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zaaraoui%20Abdelkader">Zaaraoui Abdelkader</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kerfah%20Rabeh"> Kerfah Rabeh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Noura%20Belkheir"> Noura Belkheir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Matene%20Elhacene"> Matene Elhacene</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The trapezoidal bluff body is a typical configuration of vortex shedding bodies. The aim of this work is to study flow behaviour over a trapezoidal cylinder at low Reynolds number. The geometry was constructed from a prototype device for measuring the volumetric flow-rate by counting vortices. Simulations were run for this geometry under steady and unsteady flow conditions using finite volume discretization. Laminar flow was investigated in this model with rigid walls and homogeneous incompressible Newtonian fluid. Calculations were performed for Reynolds number range 5 ≤ Re ≤ 180 and several flow parameters were documented. The present computations are in good agreement with the experimental observations and the numerical calculations by several investigators. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bluff%20body" title="bluff body">bluff body</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=confined%20flow" title=" confined flow"> confined flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=numerical%20calculations" title=" numerical calculations"> numerical calculations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=steady%20and%20unsteady%20flow" title=" steady and unsteady flow"> steady and unsteady flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vortex%20shedding%20flow%20meter" title=" vortex shedding flow meter"> vortex shedding flow meter</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54144/numerical-investigation-of-flow-behaviour-across-a-trapezoidal-bluff-body-at-low-reynolds-number" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54144.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">287</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5263</span> Numerical Flow Simulation around HSP Propeller in Open Water and behind a Vessel Wake Using RANS CFD Code </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kadda%20Boumediene">Kadda Boumediene</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohamed%20Bouzit"> Mohamed Bouzit</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The prediction of the flow around marine propellers and vessel hulls propeller interaction is one of the challenges of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The wake is force-free and discrete such that the wake lattices move with the free-stream once shed from the wing. It is observed that the time-averaged unsteady coefficient of lift sees a relative drop at post-stall angles of attack in comparison to its steady counterpart for some angles of attack. Multiple solutions occur at post-stall and three different algorithms to choose solutions in these regimes show both unsteadiness and non-convergence of the iterations. The distribution of coefficient of lift on the wing span also shows sawtooth. Distribution of vorticity changes both along span and in the direction of the free-stream as the wake develops over time with distinct roll-up, which increases with time. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=post-stall" title="post-stall">post-stall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady" title=" unsteady"> unsteady</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wing" title=" wing"> wing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aerodynamics" title=" aerodynamics"> aerodynamics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/81015/unsteady-3d-post-stall-aerodynamics-accounting-for-effective-loss-in-camber-due-to-flow-separation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/81015.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">370</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5261</span> Unsteady and Steady State in Natural Convection</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Syukri%20Himran">Syukri Himran</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Erwin%20Eka%20Putra"> Erwin Eka Putra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nanang%20Roni"> Nanang Roni</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study explains the natural convection of viscous fluid flowing on semi-infinite vertical plate. A 3-D Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) closed by the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) was adopted to simulate the large-scale vortex structure in vortex tube, and the numerical model was verified by the steady results. The swirl number was calculated for the vortex tube and the flow field was classed as strong swirl flow. According to the results, a time-dependent spiral flow field gyrates around a central recirculation zone which is precessing around the axis of the tube, and manifests the flow structure is the spiral type (S-type) vortex breakdown. The vortex breakdown is crucial for the formation of the central recirculation zone (CRZ), a further discussion was about the affection on CRZ with the different external conditions of vortex tube, the study on the unsteady characters was expected to hope to design of vortex tube and analyze the energy separation effect. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vortex%20tube" title="vortex tube">vortex tube</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vortex%20breakdown" title=" vortex breakdown"> vortex breakdown</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=central%20recirculation%20zone" title=" central recirculation zone"> central recirculation zone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady" title=" unsteady"> unsteady</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20separation" title=" energy separation"> energy separation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52531/unsteady-characteristics-investigation-on-the-precessing-vortex-breakdown-and-energy-separation-in-a-vortex-tube" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52531.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">318</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5259</span> Shear Layer Investigation through a High-Load Cascade in Low-Pressure Gas Turbine Conditions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mehdi%20Habibnia%20Rami">Mehdi Habibnia Rami</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shidvash%20Vakilipour"> Shidvash Vakilipour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohammad%20H.%20Sabour"> Mohammad H. The first phase was to implement the steady condition capturing the separation bubble. To accurately predict the separated region, the effects of three different turbulence models and computational grids were separately investigated. The results of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model on the finest grid structure are acceptably in a good agreement with its relevant experimental results. The second phase is mainly to address the effects of wake entrance on bubble disappearance in unsteady situation. In the current simulations, from what was suggested in an experiment, simulating the flow unsteadiness, with concentrations on small scale disturbances instead of simulating a complete oncoming wake, is the key issue. Subsequently, the results from the current strategy to apply the effects of the wake and two other experimental work were compared to be in a good agreement. Between the two experiments, one of them deals with wake passing unsteady flow, and the other one implements experimentally the same approach as the current Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low-pressure%20turbine%20cascade" title="low-pressure turbine cascade">low-pressure turbine cascade</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=large-Eddy%20simulation%20%28LES%29" title=" large-Eddy simulation (LES)"> large-Eddy simulation (LES)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RANS%20turbulence%20models" title=" RANS turbulence models"> RANS turbulence models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady%20flow%20measurements" title=" unsteady flow measurements"> unsteady flow measurements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20separation" title=" flow separation"> flow separation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62574/shear-layer-investigation-through-a-high-load-cascade-in-low-pressure-gas-turbine-conditions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62574.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">305</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5258</span> Soret and Dufour&#039;s Effects on Mixed Convection Unsteady MHD Boundary Layer Flow over a Stretching Sheet Embedded in a Porous Medium with Chemically Reactive Spices</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Deva%20Kanta%20Phukan">Deva Kanta Phukan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> An investigation is made to carry out to study the thermal-diffusion and diffusion thermo-effects in hydro-magnetic unsteady flow by a mixed convection boundary layer past an impermeable vertical stretching sheet embedded in a conducting fluid-saturated porous medium in the presence of a chemical reaction effect. The velocity of stretching surface, the surface temperature and the concentration are assumed to vary linearly with the distance along the surface. The governing partial differential equations are transformed in to self similar unsteady equations using similarity transformations and solved numerically by the Runge kutta fourth order scheme in association with the shooting method for the whole transient domain from the initial state to the final steady state flow. Numerical results for the velocity, temperature, the concentration, the skin friction , and the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are shown graphically for various flow parameters. The results reveal that there is a smooth transition of flow from unsteady state to the final steady state. The effect of different groove types and depths on the Cd coefficient has been analyzed and grooves increase the Cd coefficient compared to the smooth cylinder. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CFD" title="CFD">CFD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drag%20coefficient" title=" drag coefficient"> drag coefficient</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20over%20cylinder" title=" flow over cylinder"> flow over cylinder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=passive%20flow%20control" title=" passive flow control"> passive flow control</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/130644/numerical-analysis-of-passive-controlled-turbulent-flow-around-a-circular-cylinder" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/130644.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">237</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5256</span> Investigation of the Kutta Condition Using Unsteady Flow</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20Bhojnadh">K. This aerofoil was subjected to oscillations to create an unsteady flow over the aerofoil, therefore, creating turbulence, with unsteady aerodynamics playing a key role to determine the flow regimes when the aerofoil is subjected to different angles of attack along with varying Reynolds numbers. Many theories were evolved to determine the flow parameters of a 2-D aerofoil in these unsteady conditions because they behave unpredictably at the trailing edge when subjected to a different angle of attack. The shear area observed in the boundary layer at the trailing edge tends towards an unsteady turbulent flow even at small angles of attack, creating drag as the flow separates, reducing the aerodynamic performance of aerofoil. In this paper, research was conducted to determine the effect of Kutta circulation over the aerofoil and the effect of that circulation in reducing the effect of pressure and boundary layer distribution over the aerofoil. The effect of circulation is observed by using Ansys Fluent by using varying flow parameters and differential schemes to observe the flow behaviour on the aerofoil. Initially, steady flow analysis was conducted on the aerofoil to determine the effect of circulation, and it was noticed that the effect of circulation could only be properly observed when the aerofoil is subjected to oscillations. Therefore, that was modelled by using Ansys user-defined functions, which define the motion of the aerofoil by creating a dynamic mesh on the aerofoil. Initial results were observed, and further development of the dynamic mesh functions in Ansys is taking place. This research will determine the overall basic principles of unsteady flow aerodynamics applied to the investigation of Kutta related circulation, and gives an indication regarding the generation of vortices which is discussed further in this paper. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=circulation" title="circulation">circulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20seperation" title=" flow seperation"> flow seperation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=turbulence%20modelling" title=" turbulence modelling"> turbulence modelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vortices" title=" vortices "> vortices </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/84546/investigation-of-the-kutta-condition-using-unsteady-flow" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/84546.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">205</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5255</span> Study of Unsteady Behaviour of Dynamic Shock Systems in Supersonic Engine Intakes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Siddharth%20Ahuja">Siddharth Ahuja</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=T.%20M.%20Muruganandam"> T. For a given pressure ratio across a wind tunnel, the normal shock&#39;s location can be computed as per one-dimensional steady gas dynamics. Similarly, for some other pressure ratio, the location of the normal shock will change accordingly, again computed using one-dimensional gas dynamics. This investigation focuses on the small-time interval between the first steady shock location and the new steady shock location (corresponding to different pressure ratios). In essence, this study aims to shed light on the motion of the shock from one steady location to another steady location. Further, this study aims to create the foundation of the Unsteady Gas Dynamics field enabling further insight in future research work. According to the new pressure ratio, a pressure pulse, generated at the exit of the tunnel which travels and perturbs the shock from its original position, setting it into motion. During such activity, other numerous physical phenomena also happen at the same time. However, three broad phenomena have been focused on, in this study - Traversal of a Wave, Fluid Element Interactions and Wave Interactions. The above mentioned three phenomena create, alter and kill numerous waves for different conditions. The waves which are created by the above-mentioned phenomena eventually interact with the shock and set it into motion. Numerous such interactions with the shock will slowly make it settle into its final position owing to the new pressure ratio across the duct, as estimated by one-dimensional gas dynamics. This analysis will be extremely helpful in the prediction of inlet &#39;unstart&#39; of the flow in a supersonic engine intake and its prominence with the incoming flow Mach number, incoming flow pressure and the external perturbation pressure is also studied to help design more efficient supersonic intakes for engines like ramjets and scramjets. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=analytical%20investigation" title="analytical investigation">analytical investigation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression%20and%20expansion%20waves" title=" compression and expansion waves"> compression and expansion waves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fluid%20element%20interactions" title=" fluid element interactions"> fluid element interactions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shock%20trajectory" title=" shock trajectory"> shock trajectory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supersonic%20flow" title=" supersonic flow"> supersonic flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady%20gas%20dynamics" title=" unsteady gas dynamics"> unsteady gas dynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=varying%20area%20duct" title=" varying area duct"> varying area duct</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave%20interactions" title=" wave interactions"> wave interactions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/66446/study-of-unsteady-behaviour-of-dynamic-shock-systems-in-supersonic-engine-intakes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/66446.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">217</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5254</span> Investigation on Unsteady Flow of a Turbine Stage with Negative Bowed Stator</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Keke%20Gao">Keke Gao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tao%20Lin"> Tao Lin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yonghui%20Xie"> Yonghui Xie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Di%20Zhang"> Di Zhang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Complicated unsteady flow in axial turbines produces high-frequency unsteady aerodynamic exciting force, which threatens the safe operation of turbines. This paper illustrates how negative-bowed stator reduces the rotor unsteady aerodynamic exciting force by unsteady flow field. With the support of three-dimensional viscous compressible Navier-Stokes equation, the single axial turbines with 0, -10 and -20 degree bowed stator are comparably investigated, aiming to identify the flow field structure difference caused by various negative-bowed degrees. The results show that negative-bowed stator strengthens the turbulence kinetic energy, which is further strengthened with the increase of negative-bowed degree. Meanwhile, the flow phenomenon including stator wakes and passage vortex is shown. In addition, the interaction of upstream negative-bowed wakes contributes to the reduction of unsteady blade load fluctuation. Furthermore, the aerodynamic exciting force decreases with the increasing negative bowed degree, while the efficiency is correspondingly reduced. This paper provides the reference for the alleviation of the harmful impact caused by unsteady interaction with the method of wake control. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady%20flow" title="unsteady flow">unsteady flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=axial%20turbine" title=" axial turbine"> axial turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wake" title=" wake"> wake</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aerodynamic%20force" title=" aerodynamic force"> aerodynamic force</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=loss" title=" loss"> loss</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68734/investigation-on-unsteady-flow-of-a-turbine-stage-with-negative-bowed-stator" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68734.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">295</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5253</span> Unsteady Flow and Heat Transfer of Nanofluid from Circular Tube in Cross-Flow</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=H.%20Bayat">H. The aims of this study were to extract the characteristics of fluid forces acting on road vehicles under unsteady wind conditions and obtain new information on drag forces in a practical on-road test. We applied pulsating wind as a representative example of the atmospheric fluctuations that vehicles encounter on the road. That is, we considered the case where the vehicles are moving at constant speed in the air, with large wind oscillations. The experimental tests were performed on the Ahmed-type test model, which is a simplified vehicle model. This model was chosen because of its simplicity and the data accumulated under steady wind conditions. The experiments were carried out with a time-averaged Reynolds number of Re = 4.16x10⁵ and a pulsation period of T = 1.5 s, with amplitude of η = 0.235. Unsteady fluid forces of drag and lift were obtained utilizing a multi-component load cell. It was observed that the unsteady aerodynamic forces differ significantly from those under steady wind conditions. They exhibit a phase shift and an enhanced response to the wind oscillations. Furthermore, their behavior depends on the slant angle of the rear shape of the model. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ahmed%20body" title="Ahmed body">Ahmed body</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=automotive%20aerodynamics" title=" automotive aerodynamics"> automotive aerodynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady%20wind" title=" unsteady wind"> unsteady wind</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wind%20tunnel%20test" title=" wind tunnel test"> wind tunnel test</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74663/an-experimental-investigation-into-fluid-forces-on-road-vehicles-in-unsteady-flows" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74663.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">293</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5251</span> Unsteady Reactive Hydromagnetic Fluid Flow of a Two-Step Exothermic Chemical Reaction through a Channel</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J.%20A.%20Gbadeyan">J. Heat/mass transfer was measured in blade tip region depending on a variety of strouhal number by naphthalene sublimation technique. Naphthalene sublimation technique measures heat transfer using a heat/mass transfer analogy. Experiments are performed in linear cascade which is composed of five turbine blades and rotating rods. Strouhal number of inlet flow are changed ranging from 0 to 0.22. Reynolds number is 100,000 based on 11.4 m/s of outlet flow and axial chord length. Three different squealer tip geometries such as base squealer tip, vertical rib squealer tip, and camber line squealer tip are used to study how unsteady wakes affect heat transfer on a blade tip. Depending on squealer tip geometry, different flow patterns occur on a blade tip. Also, unsteady wakes cause reduced tip leakage flow and turbulent flow. As a result, as strouhal number increases, heat/mass transfer coefficients decrease due to the reduced leakage flow. As strouhal number increases, heat/ mass transfer coefficients on a blade tip increase in vertical rib squealer tip. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gas%20turbine" title="gas turbine">gas turbine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blade%20tip" title=" blade tip"> blade tip</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heat%20transfer" title=" heat transfer"> heat transfer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unsteady%20wakes" title=" unsteady wakes"> unsteady wakes</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48133/heat-transfer-characteristics-on-blade-tip-with-unsteady-wake" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48133.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">373</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5249</span> Unsteady Stagnation-Point Flow towards a Shrinking Sheet with Radiation Effect </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=F.%20M.%20Ali">F. It is observed that the present LBM code produces results that have similar accuracy with the well-established CFD code, as an additionally, LBM needs much smaller CPU time for the prediction of the unsteady phonema. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laminar%20forced%20convection" title="laminar forced convection">laminar forced convection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lbm" title=" lbm"> lbm</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=triangular%20prism" title=" triangular prism"> triangular prism</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27134/computational-study-of-flow-and-heat-transfer-characteristics-of-an-incompressible-fluid-in-a-channel-using-lattice-boltzmann-method" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27134.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">373</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5246</span> Entropy Generation of Unsteady Reactive Hydromagnetic Generalized Couette Fluid Flow of a Two-Step Exothermic Chemical Reaction Through a Channel</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rasaq%20Kareem">Rasaq Kareem</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jacob%20Gbadeyan"> Jacob Gbadeyan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this study, analysis of the entropy generation of an unsteady reactive hydromagnetic generalized couette fluid flow of a two-step exothermic chemical reaction through a channel with isothermal wall temperature under the influence of different chemical kinetics namely: Sensitized, Arrhenius and Bimolecular kinetics was investigated. The mixing process can be classified as active or passive according to the use of external energy. Literature of microfluidics reports that most of the work is done on the models of steady laminar flow; however, the study of unsteady laminar flow is an active area of research at present. There are wide applications of this, out of which, we consider nanoparticle synthesis in micro-mixers. In this work, we have developed a model for unsteady flow to study the mixing performance of a passive micro mixer for reactants used for such synthesis. The model is developed in Finite Volume Method (FVM)-based software, OpenFOAM. The model is tested by carrying out the simulations at Re of 0.5. Mixing performance of the micro-mixer is investigated using simulated concentration values of mixed species across the width of the micro-mixer and calculating the variance across a line profile. Experimental validation is done by passing dyes through a Y shape micro-mixer fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and comparing variances with the simulated ones. Gold nanoparticles are later synthesized through the micro-mixer and collected at two different times leading to significantly different size distributions. These times match with the time scales over which reactant concentrations vary as obtained from simulations. Our simulations could thus be used to create design aids for passive micro-mixers used in nanoparticle synthesis. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lab-on-chip" title="Lab-on-chip">Lab-on-chip</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LOC" title=" LOC"> LOC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=micro-mixer" title=" micro-mixer"> micro-mixer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=OpenFOAM" title=" OpenFOAM"> OpenFOAM</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PDMS" title=" PDMS"> PDMS</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/103224/unsteady-flow-simulations-for-microchannel-design-and-its-fabrication-for-nanoparticle-synthesis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/103224.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">161</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5244</span> Effect of Magnetic Field on Unsteady MHD Poiseuille Flow of a Third Grade Fluid Under Exponential Decaying Pressure Gradient with Ohmic Heating</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=O.%20W.%20Lawal">O. As this concept is fairly new and cost intensive to design and test, computational methods are useful in easing the preliminary design process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be utilized in many forms to simulate nozzle flow, and there exist various CFD studies in both 2D mechanical and 3D injection based thrust vectoring, and yet, 3D mechanical thrust vectoring analyses, at this point in time, are lacking variety. Additionally, the freely available test data is constrained to limited pitch angles and geometries. In this study, based on a test case provided by NASA, both steady and unsteady 3D CFD simulations are conducted to examine the aerodynamic performance of a mechanical thrust vectoring nozzle model and to validate the utilized numerical model. Steady analyses are performed to verify the flow characteristics of the nozzle at pitch angles of 0, 10 and 20 degrees, and the results are compared with experimental data. It is observed that the pressure data obtained on the inner surface of the nozzle at each specified pitch angle and under different flow conditions with pressure ratios of 1.5, 2 and 4, as well as at azimuthal angle of 0, 45, 90, 135, and 180 degrees exhibited a high level of agreement with the corresponding experimental results. To validate the CFD model, the insights from the steady analyses are utilized, followed by unsteady analyses covering a wide range of pitch angles from 0 to 20 degrees. Throughout the simulations, a mesh morphing method using a carefully calculated mathematical shape deformation model that simulates the vectored nozzle shape exactly at each point of its travel is employed to dynamically alter the divergent part of the nozzle over time within this pitch angle range. The mesh morphing based vectored nozzle shapes were compared with the drawings provided by NASA, ensuring a complete match was achieved. This computational approach allowed for the creation of a comprehensive database of results without the need to generate separate solution domains. The database contains results at every 0.01° increment of nozzle pitch angle. The unsteady analyses, generated using the morphing method, are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental data, further confirming the accuracy of the CFD model. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thrust%20vectoring" title="thrust vectoring">thrust vectoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computational%20fluid%20dynamics" title=" computational fluid dynamics"> computational fluid dynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=3d%20mesh%20morphing" title=" 3d mesh morphing"> 3d mesh morphing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematical%20shape%20deformation%20model" title=" mathematical shape deformation model"> mathematical shape deformation model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170764/a-novel-approach-to-3d-thrust-vectoring-cfd-via-mesh-morphing" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170764.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">83</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5241</span> Unsteady Numerical Analysis of Sediment Erosion Affected High Head Francis Turbine</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saroj%20Gautam">Saroj Gautam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ram%20Lama"> Ram Lama</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hari%20Prasad%20Neopane"> Hari Prasad Neopane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sailesh%20Chitrakar"> Sailesh Chitrakar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Biraj%20Singh%20Thapa"> Biraj Singh Thapa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Baoshan%20Zhu"> Baoshan Zhu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Sediment flowing along with the water in rivers flowing in South Asia erodes the turbine components. As a result, most of the supersonic vehicles are widely designed using steady state flow characteristics which may have errors while facing unsteady situations. This study aims to explore the possibility of varying the Mach number of the flow during wind tunnel operation. The nozzle walls are restricted to be inflexible for cooling near the throat due to high stagnation temperature requirement of the flow to simulate the conditions as experienced by the vehicle. Two simple independent mechanisms, rotation and translation of nozzle walls have been analyzed and the nozzle ranges have been optimized to vary the Mach number from Mach 2 to Mach 5 using minimum number of nozzles in the wind tunnel. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=method%20of%20characteristics" title="method of characteristics">method of characteristics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nozzle" title=" nozzle"> nozzle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supersonic%20wind%20tunnel" title=" supersonic wind tunnel"> supersonic wind tunnel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=variable%20mach%20number" title=" variable mach number"> variable mach number</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/66454/analysis-of-simple-mechanisms-to-continuously-vary-mach-number-in-a-supersonic-wind-tunnel-facility" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/66454.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">295</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5237</span> Analysis of Flow Dynamics of Heated and Cooled Pylon Upstream to the Cavity past Supersonic Flow with Wall Heating and Cooling </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vishnu%20Asokan">Vishnu Asokan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zaid%20M.%20Paloba"> Zaid M. Cavity flow finds application in aircraft wheel well, weapons bay, combustion chamber of scramjet engines, etc. These flows are highly unsteady, compressible and turbulent and it involves mass entrainment coupled with acoustics phenomenon. Variation of flow dynamics in an angled cavity with a heated and cooled pylon upstream to the cavity with spatial combinations of heat flux addition and removal to the wall studied numerically. The goal of study is to investigate the effect of energy addition, removal to the cavity walls and pylon cavity flow dynamics. Preliminary steady state numerical simulations on inclined cavities with heat addition have shown that wall pressure profiles, as well as the recirculation, are influenced by heat transfer to the compressible fluid medium. Such a hybrid control of cavity flow dynamics in the form of heat transfer and pylon geometry can open out greater opportunities in enhancement of mixing and flame holding requirements of supersonic combustors. Addition of pylon upstream to the cavity reduces the acoustic oscillations emanating from the geometry. A numerical unsteady analysis of supersonic flow past cavities exposed to cavity wall heating and cooling with heated and cooled pylon helps to get a clear idea about the oscillation suppression in the cavity. A Cavity of L/D 4 and aft wall angle 22 degree with an upstream pylon of h/D=1.5 mm with a wall angle 29 degree exposed to supersonic flow of Mach number 2 and heat flux of 40 W/cm² and -40 W/cm² modeled for the above study. In the preliminary study, the domain is modeled and validated numerically with a turbulence model of SST k-ω using an HLLC implicit scheme. Both qualitative and quantitative flow data extracted and analyzed using advanced CFD tools. Flow visualization is done using numerical Schlieren method as the fluid medium gives the density variation. The heat flux addition to the wall increases the secondary vortex size of the cavity and removal of energy leads to the reduction in vortex size. The flow field turbulence seems to be increasing at higher heat flux. The shear layer thickness increases as heat flux increases. The steady state analysis of wall pressure shows that there is variation on wall pressure as heat flux increases. Shift in frequency of unsteady wall pressure analysis is an interesting observation for the above study. The time averaged skin friction seems to be reducing at higher heat flux due to the variation in viscosity of fluid inside the cavity. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20addition" title="energy addition">energy addition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=frequency%20shift" title=" frequency shift"> frequency shift</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Numerical%20Schlieren" title=" Numerical Schlieren"> Numerical Schlieren</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20layer" title=" shear layer"> shear layer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vortex%20evolution" title=" vortex evolution"> vortex evolution</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110270/analysis-of-flow-dynamics-of-heated-and-cooled-pylon-upstream-to-the-cavity-past-supersonic-flow-with-wall-heating-and-cooling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110270.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">143</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5236</span> Empirical Heat Transfer Correlations of Finned-Tube Heat Exchangers in Pulsatile Flow</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jason%20P.%20Michaud">Jason P. Three radiators found in desktop computers sized for 120&nbsp;mm fans were tested in steady and pulsatile flows of ambient air over a Reynolds number range of&nbsp; 50 &lt; Re &lt; 900. Water at 60&nbsp;&deg;C was circulated through the radiators to maintain a constant fin temperature during the tests. For steady flow, it was found that the heat transfer rate increased linearly with the mass flow rate of air. The pulsatile flow experiments showed that frequency of pulsation had a negligible effect on the heat transfer rate for the range of frequencies tested (0.5&nbsp;Hz &ndash; 2.5&nbsp;Hz). For all three radiators, the heat transfer rate was decreased in the case of pulsatile flow. Linear heat transfer correlations for steady and pulsatile flow were calculated in terms of Reynolds number and Nusselt number. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
