Only days before, the Dubliners had headlined Reading and Leeds, and in the same month they’ve announced a headline gig at the 45,000-capacity Finsbury Park, making tonight’s intimate 1,000-capacity Kingston show feel almost inconceivable. Given the trajectory they’re on, it’s hard to imagine that we’ll get to see them in a venue so small again.</p> <p>Tonight was the first stop on a brief, intimate three-night tour of small venues in Kingston, Liverpool, and Newcastle, warm-ups before the band progress to an arena world tour. Tickets, at just £15, sold out within seconds – to no one’s surprise given their increasingly huge fanbase. Fontaines DC have achieved the rare feat of reaching a mass audience whilst releasing music that is both singular and growingly experimental. They’ve somehow managed to bring post-punk indie rock back to the mainstream – even <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/harry-styles"><strong>Harry Styles</strong></a> was spotted nodding away at their recent Camden gig.</p> <p>Fans climb up onto each other’s shoulders as the five-piece eventually burst onto the stage with Romance, the title track from <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/fontaines-dc-romance">their latest album</a>, immediately plunging the room into a whirlpool of noise and flashing green lights. The scale of their music – dense, layered, and muscular – feels almost too grand their surroundings, yet the closeness only adds to the thrill as their sprawling songs are compressed into the tiny venue. Frontman <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/grian-chatten">Grian Chatten</a> spends almost the entire set on the edge of the stage, balancing precariously on the band’s flight case or perched on the metal barrier, his outstretched fingers reaching towards the audience like a modern-day Michelangelo. The audience pay him back in outstretched limbs, wild mosh pits and word-for-word singalongs often louder than the band themselves; it’s the kind of raw, physical connection between performer and Donovan Livesey)</p></div> <p>The setlist is a perfect blend of old and new, with the band diving into fan favourites Jackie Down the Line and Televised Mind before treating the crowd to a live debut of Bug, the sixth track from their new album. The response is instant: a mass of bodies swaying and shouting along, the song already cemented as a fan favourite despite being new to the live circuit.</p> <p>But Fontaines DC aren’t just another band to admire musically – they’re a band with a message, with politics never far from the surface throughout tonight’s gig. The huge Palestinian flag draped over the band’s keyboard setup was a gesture of the band’s ongoing support for Palestine, and the crowd responded in kind, devotedly chanting “Free Palestine” between songs. It’s refreshing to see a band of Fontaines DC’s stature take a stand so publicly.</p> <p>The band then break into one of their most overtly political tracks – the raw, early hit Boys In The Better Land, in which Chatten discusses identity in post-colonial Ireland. First aired in an Irish pub in 2018, it still hits with the same fury and excitement and is a reminder of the band’s rapid evolution over just a few years. Despite their new polished, stylised look, the band’s commitment to playing early, angry tracks like from their raw debut album shows their commitment to their humble roots as they stay true to the themes that first defined them.</p> <p>As the jagged guitar riffs of Boys In The Better Land give way to ethereal piano, the crowd are brought seamlessly back to modern-day Fontaines DC as the night ends with Starburster, a stadium-sized closer that feels too huge for the confines of this modest club. Its towering chorus reverberates through the room as Chatten lifts the mic stand. It’s a glimpse of the awesome heights Fontaines DC are destined to reach at Finsbury Park and beyond, yet for now, in this intimate space, the song takes on a different kind of resonance – still grand, anthemic, yet deeply personal, as if the band are sharing something momentous with only the lucky few in attendance.</p> <p>As the final notes fade and the band wave a quick goodbye, the crowd are left buzzing, fully aware that they’ve witnessed something special. Fontaines DC reminded us why they’re the band of the moment – it’s rare to see a group balance political conviction, raw emotion, and sheer musical heft so effortlessly. And rarer still to see it in a space so small.
