SURINAME AIRFORCE This small air arm was formed in 1982 and has about 100 personnel. It operates from Paramaribo-Zanderij and Zorg en Hoop, principally on border and coastal patrols and on various transport and liaison tasks. Type PC-7 Turbo-Trainer BN-2B Defender Cessna TU206G Bell 205 Alouette III No Role 1 patrol/trng 3 patrol/trans 1 liaison 1 trans/SAR 2 liaison/SAR SWAZILAND UMBUTFO SWAZILAND DEFENCE FORCE - AIR WING Based at Manzani-Matsapha, the air wing has two IAI-201 Aravas which are fitted with gun-packs and hardpoints for rocket pods. The aircraft are flown on general-transport missions, as well as COIN and border-patrol duties. SWEDEN SVENSKA FLYGVAPNET (AIR FORCE) Because of a 1994/5 defence budget which has declined the Swedish air force is to reduce the overall number of its fight er squadrons from 20 to 16 by 2000, and to cut down on operations and maintenance spending while modernising its smaller fleet with the JAS39 Gripen. Sweden expects to see its next-generation JAS39 Gripen lightweight multi-role fighter in operation by 1997. An ini tial 140 have been ordered, including 14 two-seater JAS39B operational trainers, against an eventual requirement of around 300 JAS39s. The aircraft will operate in the interceptor, attack and reconnaissance roles, eventually replacing all versions of the Draken and Viggen. The last aircraft to be replaced by the JAS39 will be the JA37 Viggen interceptors, the last of which was delivered on 29 June, 1990. Two Draken squadrons will stay in service until the late 1990s, and their J35Fs have been updated accordingly to J35J standard. In December 1993, Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration ordered six Saab 340-based AEW aircraft, with deliveries starting in 1995. All are used on ASW, over-the-horizon target acquisition for surface vessels, and general-transport duties. With similar roles and equipment are 12 Squadron and 13 Squadron at Save, near Goteborg, and Kallinge, near Ronneby, respectively. Three C.212 Aviocars were ordered in December 1985, one going to 13 Sqn, the navy's only CASA C.121 Aviocar, while the other two have replaced the Cessna 404s used for merly by the coastguard service. Swedair has installed ASW/maritime-patrol equipment in the navy's Aviocar and Boeing-Vertol 107s have been updated to incorporate new avionics and re-engined with Gnome HI400 turboshafts. Type C.212 Aviocar PA-31 Navajo 350 Boeing-Vertol 107/KV-107 AB.206B JetRanger No Role 1 ASW/MP 4 comms/instrtrng 14 ASW/trans 10 ASW/Liaison ARMEFLYGKAR (ARMY AIR CORPS) The army air corps is primarily tasked with casualty evacua tion, personnel/cargo transport, artillery spotting and reconnaissance, but has expanded its activities to include the anti-tank role, using Heli-TOW equipped BO. 105s. The AB-204 fleet will remain in service throughout the 1990s. Type Fpl61 Bulldog Dornier 27A AB.204B B0.105CB AB.206A JetRanger Hughes 300C No Role 6+ trng/AOP 2 liaison 16 utility 20 anti-tank 19 utility 26 trng/AOP MARINFLYGET/SWEDISH NAVAL AVIATION The Swedish navy's helicopter force consists of three squadrons. Based at Berga near Stockholm, 11 Sqn is SWITZERLAND SWISS AIR FORCE AND ANTI-AIRCRAFT COMMAND The Air Force and Anti-Aircraft troops together form a Corps within the Swiss Army. All air-defence systems, such as combat aircraft, helicopters, anti-aircraft artillery and ground-to-air guided missiles are combined within this Corps and function as a single unit, supported by a central early-warning system. In the past, Switzerland has endeav oured to modernise its air-defence system through updating weaponry and aircraft. There have also been steps to reduce the present size of the Swissair force. The PC-7 and Hawk Mk66 trainers are utilised in the initial pilot-training phases. The Tiger F-5E and modified Mirage III/S fighters are used to ensure the defence of Switzerland's airspace and the respect of her neutrality. In 1997, air defence will be strengthened by the delivery of 34 new F/A-18 fighters. A total of 12 Pilatus PC-9s are used as target aircraft (for the anti-aircraft artillery). Air-reconnais sance missions are flown by Mirage III/RS. The PC-6 Porter and Alouette III and Super Puma helicopters are used in troop-transportation operations. Because of material age and costs, the Swiss air force has been forced to liquidate outdated equipment and to reduce its active troops. In the near future, the Swiss air force will cease operations with its PC-3 and Alouette II helicopters and, by the end of 1994, the entire Hunter bomber fleet will be discontinued and dismantled. Here, the air-to-ground combat power of the service will be reduced strongly. The Swiss air force and anti-aircraft troops are undergoing re organisation and re-structuring, which will take effect in 1995. There are now four three-squadron interceptor regiments with MiG-21s, MiG-23s, MiG-25s and MiG-29s. The strike/attack force has Su-22s, Su-24s andMiG-23s. Tadjikistan has declared its intention to form its own air force and to buy Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters, but, so far, Russian units provide air cover for border guards on the frontier with Afghanistan. Since mid-June 1994, the civil war in the former Soviet Central Asian republic shows every sign of being rekindled. TAIWAN REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE Taiwan has bought 150 F-16s and 60 Mirage 2000-5s , to counter the purchase of Su-27s by the People's Republic of China. The US decision to relax its informal embargo against the sale of fighter aircraft to Taiwan means that fur ther upgrades of the Ching-Kuo Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF) are unlikely, with orders slashed in 1992 from a planned 250-aircraft programme to 130 machines. The IDF has already entered service and is replacing ageing F- 104 Starfighters and F-5s. An IDF with a frilly-capable GD- 53 radar is due by the end of 1994. The US Air Force will lease T-38s to the Chinese air force, to provide extra train ing for F-16 pilots. The service is organised along US lines and has six wings plus a VIP squadron and a training centre. F-5E Tigers are flown by the 1st, 2nd and 455th Tactical Fighter Wings (TFW) at Tainan, Hsin Chu and Chic Ye respectively, and also by two squadrons in the 5th Composite Wing at Tao Yuan. Other elements of the 5th CW consist of an RF-104G reconnaissance squadron and the F-5 OCU. The 30th TFEW at Ching Chuan Kang operates F-104G Starfighters. The final wing is the 20th Tactical Transport Wing at Pingtung (North and South airfields), with a mix of C-47 Dakotas, C-119Gs, C-123 Providers and C-130H Hercules. A VIP squadron is based at Sung Shan, while the Training Centre is at Kang Shan, equipped with T-34Cs, T- CH-ls, AT-TC-3s and T-38A Talons.
