book 35 years ago, after being introduced to it in a science-fiction literature course at Penn State University (taught by Philip Klass, aka William Tenn). But as I progressed through the story I realized that nothing, except for one detail which must have been discussed in class, was at all familiar.<br><br>While I enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it, and was prior to the sci-fi class familiar with Le Guin due to having read the Earthsea trilogy in high-school, I find that I'm only able to impart 4 stars. <br>Not for trying though.<br><br>Yes, this is considered a classic of science fiction. And yes, I did seek it out to read due to it's being the 50th anniversary of the initial publication. And yes, the scenario of a long-lost branch of humanity being rediscovered after hundreds of millennia of separation, and the inherent evolutionary drift due to the challenges and adaptations imbued onto the humans due to the climate and distance in time and space from those that planted the colony on the planet of "Winter", is a fascinating one.<br><br>The author didn't make a central point of the genetic and sexual differences in her storyline... it was just there as incidental background to which other actions took place, which was great. As a person who considers himself fairly knowledgeable in the biological sciences this was fascinating.<br>I think, for me, that what I found most engaging was the thesis of geopolitical interplay between the two major 'nation-states' in which the central character, Genly Ai, finds himself. I really appreciate the big ideas, especially the intro about how science fiction is a thought experiment. The first half of the novel is...odd. And not really that engaging. In fact, the "side stories" were more interesting and well written, in my opinion, and got me excited about what a fantastic writer Le Guin is. <br><br>The second half of the novel is much more focused on the two main characters and had my full attention. Travelling through the wilderness in what was Le Guin's best Jack London attempt, the story was great and the conversations/relationship building was beautiful, especially the focus on gender.<br><br>Overall, I liked the novel but I certainly didn't love it. Le Guin is a science fiction novel that deals sex and gender that changed the genre as well as put her into the forefront of it as well.<br><br>Having heard that significance of this book as well the importance of the author to science fiction and fantasy, I felt the need to make sure I read it. Upon completing it I found it a fine narrative and an interesting worldbuilding that Le Guin created in social structures and political systems, and I personally found that the book reveals two different means for its title. However, the 55 years since the book published—at time of reading—things have changed in fiction and real life that have blunted its impact, namely another book and it’s adapted film franchise as well as certain sports controversies including one that happened while I was reading this book. Frankly this is a good read and I’m not disappointed in reading it, but unlike when it first came out its “impact” isn’t really felt to me personally.<br><br><i>The Left Hand of Darkness</i> is one of Ursula K. Auch haben sie keine bestimmte Vorliebe für eines der Geschlechter. Sind sie nach dem Verständnis des auf ihrem Planeten gelandeten männlichen Terraners die meiste Zeit ihres Lebens "hermaphroditische Neutren", so sehen sie sich selbst als "Potentiale" oder "Integrale". Der lebenslänglich auf ein Geschlecht festgelegte und ständig sexualisierte Terraner hingegen ist für sie ein "sexuelles Monstrum". In einer Gesellschaft wie der gethenianischen gibt es keine Vergewaltigung und natürlich keinen Ödipus-Mythos. Da kein Individuum weiß, ob es sich in der nächsten Kemmer-Phase zur Frau oder zum Mann entwickelt, jedeR Mutter des einen und Vater eines anderen Kindes sein kann, ist die gethenianische Gesellschaft "in ihren alltäglichen Funktionen und ihrer Kontinuität frei von Konflikten, die ihren Ursprung in der Sexualität haben", denn "jeder kann alles machen". Überhaupt, so heißt es an einer Stelle, ist "die Tendenz zum Dualismus, die das Denken der Menschen so beherrscht, auf Winter weit weniger stark ausgeprägt". Eine solche Gesellschaft vorzustellen, ist zumindest das Anliegen Le Guins, doch gelingt es ihr nur bedingt. Zwar sind Denken und Gemeinschaft nicht durch die Geschlechterdichotomie bestimmt, doch ist "alles [...] dem Somer-Kemmer-Zyklus unterworfen", einer anderen Dichotomie also.</div><div
