" It considers the phenomenon of the ethical critique of mindfulness based programs (MBPs), particularly from within the MBP community itself, and attempts to define the motivation for it. Defining ethics, with Aristotle, as the least precise of all the sciences, the chapter introduces a poetics of MBP pedagogy as a more useful approach to such thinking. Applying poetics, the actions of the pedagogy are shown to generate qualities that allow the class to be with and in the experience of the moment. These qualities are suggested as virtues that shape the experience of the classroom. These virtues result in generation of a form of community that is strongly bonded, yet also weakly bounded, making it a safe and productive place for those who dissent from inside or who are vulnerable outside the community. That is, pathologies are located “inside” the individual, to be solved by “inner” changes that are actuated and controlled by professional expertise. This view is nearly unchallenged in the scientific evidence base that has supported the dramatic growth of the MBIs. However, when we insist on the overlooked facts that the MBIs are group-based and relational—that is, when we turn the MBIs inside out—we become aware of new and powerful possibilities that extend far beyond individual wellness and recovery, and that can open into considerations of deepened community. In developing as teachers, it is after we have settled in to the core skills—working with the group, delivering informational content, guiding practices, and inquiring into participants’ experiences—that our real becoming begins. Whether consciously or not, we steep in the atmosphere of the classroom again and again. We are touched and moved by the transformations we witness in individuals and ourselves, and also by the whole environment in which it happens. As we learn to bring our attention to the atmosphere in the room, we begin to connect to our practice of mindfulness teaching in new and different ways. This talk will explore the radical, embodied perspectives on our core skills that we gain from this shift of attention. We will explore the concept of atmosphere from a range of viewpoints, to better understand the kind of knowing we have from inside the community of the class. We become instruments that measure the unmeasurable. We know more than we can say—and we can choose to act from that knowledge. Most important is to consider how this experience of communion, of community, sends teachers and participants into the world beyond the classroom as potential catalysts for reshaping the small and large communities to which they belong. Through narratives of group experiences and presentations of physiological and neurophysiological evidence, the two correspondents delineate three pedagogical strategies to achieve the desired ends: (1) looking beyond individualism, (2) attending to intensity, and (3) living with the text. Number one notes that students come to a group with expectations for individual progress and satisfaction, which, paradoxically, are most available within and because the atmosphere of group setting holds, supports, and offers each participant opportunities in which each can be fully with and in their experience, or, to put it another way, to touch the “really real.” Number two notes that the more often the group touches the really real, there is formed a more emotionally open human community, to which students belong, and together may move more towards justice and caring. Alongside these developments, the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is addressing unprecedented social problems through emerging counselling and psychotherapeutic services. Approaches seek to align with Bhutanese values, ethics and cultural mores, integrating mindful awareness training from the country’s Buddhist heritage. The present research project took a critical approach to deconstruct the place of mindfulness in the personal lives and professional practices of counsellors and psychotherapists in Australia and Bhutan. An interpretive and collaborative narrative research methodology was adopted to encourage reflexive, relational and dialogical understandings of participants’ views on mindfulness. The design comprised three sites of enquiry. First, as it is widely accepted that Buddhist traditions offer precise concepts and skills for mindfulness and given that Bhutan is founded upon the Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Buddhism, individual interviews were held with senior monastic and lay Buddha Dharma teachers from both the Mahayana and Theravada traditions to provide an historical context. Second, senior organisational managers who have promoted mindfulness, directly or indirectly, in their social service organisations were consulted individually. Third, in keeping with the principal aims of this project, six counsellors and psychotherapists in Perth, Western Australia and five counsellors in Bhutan were interviewed deploying a four-part cooperative group inquiry. To enhance reflexivity, these primary research partners were witnesses to each other’s interviews in their own countries, bringing forth their values, beliefs, and commitments in their professional and personal lives with regard to mindfulness. They were interviewed twice with impressions of the interviews being shared between the two countries to produce a conversational reciprocity. Throughout I situated myself as an active interpreter and co-author of the emerging discourses and practices while making transparent my research intentions. Storying noteworthy events and turning points in the lives of the counsellors and psychotherapists and revealing the significance of relationships with secular and spiritual teachers highlighted how meanings about mindfulness were shaped by diverse cultural conditions and personal circumstances. Everyday embodied storied lives and the broader discourses of cultural meaning-making generated similarities, uniqueness and novelty.
