It first appears in the Book of Genesis, following the account of the Great Flood. After the floodwaters receded, God established a covenant with Noah, his descendants, and every living creature on earth. The rainbow serves as a sign of this everlasting covenant.

Biblical References:

1. Genesis 9:12-17 : The primary biblical reference to the rainbow is found in Genesis 9:12-17. After the flood, God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

2. Ezekiel 1:28 : The rainbow is also mentioned in the prophetic vision of Ezekiel. "Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around Him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell facedown and heard a voice speaking."

3. Revelation 4:3 : In the New Testament, the rainbow appears in the apocalyptic vision of John. "And the One seated there looked like jasper and carnelian, and a rainbow that gleamed like an emerald encircled the throne."

Symbolism and Interpretation:

The rainbow is a powerful symbol of God's mercy, faithfulness, and the assurance of His promises. It serves as a reminder of God's grace and His commitment to never again destroy the earth with a flood. The rainbow's appearance after a storm can be seen as a metaphor for hope and renewal following times of trial and judgment.

In Ezekiel's vision, the rainbow signifies the glory and majesty of God, emphasizing His divine presence and holiness. Similarly, in the Book of Revelation, the rainbow encircling God's throne underscores His sovereignty and the eternal nature of His covenant with creation.

Theological Significance:

From a theological perspective, the rainbow is a testament to God's unchanging nature and His desire for a relationship with humanity. It reflects His compassion and the assurance that He will uphold His promises. The rainbow's beauty and splendor also point to the creative power of God and His ability to bring order and peace out of chaos.

Throughout Christian history, the rainbow has been a symbol of hope and divine promise, reminding believers of God's faithfulness and the ultimate redemption found in Him.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Rainbow
the token of the covenant which God made with Noah when he came forth from the ark that the waters should no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. The right interpretation of (Genesis 9:13) seems to be that God took the rainbow, which had hitherto been but a beautiful object shining in the heavens when the sun's rays fell on falling rain, and consecrated it as the sign of his love and the witness of his promise. Ecclus. 43:11. The rainbow is a symbol of God's faithfulness and mercy. In the "rainbow around the throne," (Revelation 4:3) is seen the symbol of hope and the bright emblem of mercy and love, all the more true as a symbol because it is reflected from the storm itself.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Rainbow
Genesis 9:13-15. Others, however (as Delitzsch, Commentary on Pentateuch), think that it "appeared then for the first time in the vault and clouds of heaven." It is argued by those holding this opinion that the atmosphere was differently constituted before the Flood. It is referred to three other times in Scripture (Ezek. 1:27, 28; Revelation 4:1-3; 10:1).
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
(n.) A bow or arch exhibiting, in concentric bands, the several colors of the spectrum, and formed in the part of the hemisphere opposite to the sun by the refraction and reflection of the sun's rays in drops of falling rain.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
RAINBOW
ran'-bo (qesheth, translated "a bow"; iris, "rainbow"): As most of the rainfall in Palestine is in the form of short heavy showers it is often accompanied by the rainbow. Most beautiful double bows are often seen, and occasionally the moon is bright enough to produce the bow. It is rather remarkable that there are so few references to the rainbow in the Bible. The Hebrew qesheth is the ordinary word for a bow, there being no special word for rainbow.

The interpretation of the significance of the bow in the sky is given at the close of the story of the flood, where it is called "the token of the covenant" of Yahweh with Noah that there should be no more flood: "I do set my bow in the cloud,.... and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh" (Genesis 9:13, 15). This addition to the story of the flood is not found in other mythical accounts. The foundation for the interpretation of the bow in this way seems to be that while His bow is hung in the sky God must be at peace with His people. The glory of God is likened to "the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain" (Ezekiel 1:28).
