And the prophets, do they live forever? <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They repented and said, &#8216;Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.&#8217;<span class="thinq">&#8239;</span>&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Vision of the Horses<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat,<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span> in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>I looked out into the night and saw a man riding on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in the hollow, and behind him were red, sorrel, and white horses. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>&#8220;What are these, my lord?&#8221; I asked. <p class="reg"> And the angel who was speaking with me replied, &#8220;I will show you what they are.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the man standing among the myrtle trees explained, &#8220;They are the ones the LORD has sent to patrol the earth.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the riders answered the angel of the LORD who was standing among the myrtle trees, &#8220;We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is at rest and tranquil.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the angel of the LORD said, &#8220;How long, O LORD of Hosts, will You withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been angry these seventy years?&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So the LORD spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who was speaking with me. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the angel who was speaking with me said, &#8220;Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD of Hosts says: &#8216;I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion, <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>but I am fiercely angry with the nations that are at ease. For I was a little angry, but they have added to the calamity.<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span>&#8217; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Therefore this is what the LORD says: &#8216;I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there My house will be rebuilt, declares the LORD of Hosts, and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.&#8217; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Proclaim further that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: &#8216;My cities will again overflow with prosperity; the LORD will again comfort Zion and choose Jerusalem.&#8217;<span class="thinq">&#8239;</span>&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Vision of the Horns and the Craftsmen<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then I looked up and saw four horns. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, &#8220;What are these?&#8221; <p class="reg"> And he told me, &#8220;These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then the LORD showed me four craftsmen. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>&#8220;What are these coming to do?&#8221; I asked. <p class="reg"> And He replied, &#8220;These are the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head; but the craftsmen have come to terrify them and throw down these horns of the nations that have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah to scatter it.&#8221;<A name="fn"></a><br /><br /><span class="fnverse">7</span> <span class="footnotesbot">a</span> <i>Shebat</i><span class="thin">&#8239;</span> is the eleventh month of the Hebrew lunar calendar, usually occurring within the months of January and February.<br><span class="fnverse">15</span> <span class="footnotesbot">b</span> Or <i>they have overdone the punishment</i><span class="thin">&#8239;</span><br><br /></div></div> <table border="0" align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td><div id="topheading"><a href="/bsb/zechariah/1.htm" title="Zechariah 1"></a> Zechariah 2 <a href="/bsb/zechariah/3.htm" title="Zechariah 3"></a></div></td></tr></table></div><div class="vheading2"><table width="100%"><tr><td width="99%" valign="top">Zechariah 2</td><td width="1%" valign="top"><a href="/p/bsb/esv/zechariah/2.shtml" style="color:#552200" title="Parallel Chapters"></a></tr></table></div><div class="chap"><p class="hdg">The Vision of the Measuring Line<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../ezekiel/40.htm">Ezekiel 40:1&#8211;4</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>&#8220;Where are you going?&#8221; I asked. <p class="reg">&#8220;To measure Jerusalem,&#8221; he replied, &#8220;and to determine its width and length.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then the angel who was speaking with me went out, and another angel came out to meet him <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>and said to him, &#8220;Run and tell that young man: &#8216;Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the multitude of men and livestock within it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.&#8217;<span class="thinq">&#8239;</span>&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Redemption of Zion<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../hosea/3.htm">Hosea 3:1&#8211;5</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>&#8220;Get up! Get up! Flee from the land of the north,&#8221; declares the LORD, &#8220;for I have scattered you like the four winds of heaven,&#8221; declares the LORD. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>&#8220;Get up, O Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the Daughter of Babylon!&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: &#8220;After His Glory has sent Me<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">a</a></span> against the nations that have plundered you&#8212;for whoever touches you touches the apple<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> of His eye&#8212; <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>I will surely wave My hand over them, so that they will become plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>&#8220;Shout for joy and be glad, O Daughter of Zion, for I am coming to dwell among you,&#8221; declares the LORD. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>&#8220;On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people. Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is not this man a firebrand<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> snatched from the fire?&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now Joshua was dressed in filthy garments as he stood before the angel. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/3-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So the angel said to those standing before him, &#8220;Take off his filthy clothes!&#8221; <p class="reg"> Then he said to Joshua, &#8220;See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will clothe you with splendid robes.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then I said, &#8220;Let them put a clean turban on his head.&#8221; So a clean turban was placed on his head, and they clothed him, as the angel of the LORD stood by. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua: <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>&#8220;This is what the LORD of Hosts says: &#8216;If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions, then you will govern My house and will also have charge of My courts; and I will give you a place among these who are standing here. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Hear now, O high priest Joshua, you and your companions seated before you, who are indeed a sign. Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain. Then he will bring forth the capstone accompanied by shouts of &#8216;Grace, grace to it!&#8217;<span class="thinq">&#8239;</span>&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>&#8220;The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will complete it. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent me to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For who has despised the day of small things? It will remain inside his house and destroy it, down to its timbers and stones.&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Vision of the Woman in a Basket<p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me, &#8220;Now lift up your eyes and see what is approaching.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>&#8220;What is it?&#8221; I asked. <p class="reg"> And he replied, &#8220;A measuring basket<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">b</a></span> is going forth.&#8221; Then he continued, &#8220;This is their iniquity<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">c</a></span> in all the land.&#8221; <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And behold, the cover of lead was raised, and there was a woman sitting inside the basket. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>&#8220;This is Wickedness,&#8221; he said. And he shoved her down into the basket, pushing down the lead cover over its opening. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then I lifted up my eyes and saw two women approaching, with the wind in their wings. Judah will be besieged, as well as Jerusalem. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/12-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>On that day, when all the nations of the earth gather against her, I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who would heave it away will be severely injured. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/12-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>On that day, declares the LORD, I will strike every horse with panic, and every rider with madness. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. So Jerusalem will dwell securely. <p class="indent1stline"><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes all the peoples who have warred against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>On that day a great panic from the LORD will come upon them, so that each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of one will rise against the other. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Judah will also fight at Jerusalem, and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected&#8212;gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And a similar plague will strike the horses and mules, camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps. <p class="hdg">All Nations Will Worship the King<br /><span class="cross">(<a hlef ="../leviticus/23.htm#33">Leviticus 23:33&#8211;44</a>; <a hlef ="../nehemiah/8.htm#13">Nehemiah 8:13&#8211;18</a>)</span><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then all the survivors from the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">d</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, then the rain will not fall on them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter in, then the rain will not fall on them; this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>This will be the punishment of Egypt and of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>On that day, HOLY TO THE LORD<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">e</a></span> will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the house of the LORD will be like the sprinkling bowls before the altar. <span class="reftext"><a href="/zechariah/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and cook in them.
