The twelve<MG1427> were with Him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>and <i>also</i> some<MG5100> women<MG1135> who<MG3739> had been<MG1510> healed<MG2323> of evil<MG4190> spirits<MG4151> and sicknesses<MG769>: Mary<MG3137> who was called<MG2564> Magdalene<MG3094>, from whom<MG3739> seven<MG2033> demons<MG1140> had gone<MG1831> out<MG1831>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>and Joanna<MG2489b> the wife<MG1135> of Chuza<MG5529a>, Herod’s<MG2264> steward<MG2012>, and Susanna<MG4677>, and many<MG4183> others<MG2087> who<MG3748> were contributing<MG1247> to<MG1247> their support<MG1247> out of their private<MG5225> means<MG5225>. <p class="hdg">Parable of the Sower</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793> was coming<MG4896> together<MG4896>, and those<MG3588> from the various<MG2596> cities<MG4172> were journeying<MG1975> to Him, He spoke<MG3004> by way<MG1223> of a parable<MG3850b>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“The sower<MG4687> went<MG1831> out<MG1831> to sow<MG4687> his seed<MG4703>; and as he sowed<MG4687>, some<MG3739, 3303a> fell<MG4098> beside<MG3844> the road<MG3598>, and it was trampled<MG2662> underfoot<MG2662>, and the birds<MG4071> of the sky<MG3772> ate<MG2719> it up<MG2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Other<MG2087> <i>seed</i> fell<MG2667> on rocky<MG4073> <i>soil,</i> and when it came<MG5453> up<MG5453>, it withered<MG3583> away<MG3583> because<MG1223> it had<MG2192> no<MG3361> moisture<MG2429>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Other<MG2087> <i>seed</i> fell<MG4098> among<MG1722, 3319> the thorns<MG173>; and the thorns<MG173> grew<MG4855> up<MG4855> with<MG4855> it and choked<MG638> it out<MG638>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And <i>yet</i> other<MG2087> <i>seed</i> fell<MG4098> into the good<MG18> soil<MG1093>, and grew<MG5453> up<MG5453>, and produced<MG4160> a crop<MG2590> a hundred<MG1542> times<MG1542> as<MG1542> much<MG1542>.” As He said<MG3004> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>, He would call<MG5455> out<MG5455>, “The one who has<MG2192> ears<MG3775> to hear<MG191>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>let him hear<MG191>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> His disciples<MG3101> <i>began</i> asking<MG1905> Him what<MG5101> this<MG3778> parable<MG3850b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>meant<MG1510>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004>, “To you it has been granted<MG1325> to know<MG1097> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>mysteries<MG3466> of the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316>, but to the rest<MG3062> <i>they are told</i> in parables<MG3850b>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>while seeing<MG991> they may not see<MG991>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>while hearing<MG191> they may not understand<MG4920>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“Now<MG1161> this<MG3778> is the parable<MG3850b>: the seed<MG4703> is the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And those<MG3588> beside<MG3844> the road<MG3598> are the ones who have heard<MG191>, then<MG1534> the devil<MG1228> comes<MG2064> and takes<MG142> away<MG142> the word<MG3056> from their heart<MG2588>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> they will not believe<MG4100> and be saved<MG4982>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Those on the rocky<MG4073> <i>soil are</i> the ones who<MG3739>, when<MG3752> they hear<MG191>, receive<MG1209> the word<MG3056> with joy<MG5479>; and <i>yet</i> these<MG3778> do not have<MG2192> a <i>firm</i> root<MG4491>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>they believe<MG4100> for a while<MG2540>, and in a time<MG2540> of temptation<MG3986> they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>fall<MG868> away<MG868>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And the <i>seed</i> which fell<MG4098> among<MG1519> the thorns<MG173>, these<MG3778> are the ones who have heard<MG191>, and as they go<MG4198> on<MG4198> their way<MG4198> they are choked<MG4846> by worries<MG3308>, riches<MG4149>, and pleasures<MG2237> of <i>this</i> life<MG979>, and they bring<MG5052> no<MG3756> fruit<MG5052> to<MG5052> maturity<MG5052>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But the <i>seed</i> in the good<MG2570> soil<MG1093>, these<MG3778> are the ones who<MG3748> have heard<MG191> the word<MG3056> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>with a good<MG2570> and virtuous<MG18> heart<MG2588>, and hold<MG2722> it firmly<MG2722>, and produce<MG2592> fruit<MG2592> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>perseverance<MG5281>. <p class="hdg">Parable of the Lamp</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Now<MG1161> no<MG3762> one<MG3762> lights<MG681> a lamp<MG3088> and covers<MG2572> it over with a container<MG4632>, or<MG2228> puts<MG5087> it under<MG5270> a bed<MG2825b>; but he puts<MG5087> it on a lampstand<MG3087> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> those<MG3588> who come<MG1531> in<MG1531> may see<MG991> the light<MG5457>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For nothing<MG3756> is concealed<MG2927> that will not become<MG1096> evident<MG5318>, nor<MG3761> <i>anything</i> hidden<MG614> that will not be known<MG1097> and come<MG2064> to light<MG5318>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So<MG3767> take<MG991> care<MG991> how<MG4459> you listen<MG191>; for whoever<MG3739, 302> has<MG2192>, to him <i>more</i> will be given<MG1325>; and whoever<MG3739, 302> does not have<MG2192>, even<MG2532> what<MG3739> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>thinks<MG1380> he has<MG2192> will be taken<MG142> away<MG142> from him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> His mother<MG3384> and brothers<MG80> came<MG3854> to Him, and they were unable<MG3756, 1410> to get<MG4940> to Him because<MG1223> of the crowd<MG3793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And it was reported<MG518> to Him, “Your mother<MG3384> and Your brothers<MG80> are standing<MG2476> outside<MG1854>, wishing<MG2309> to see<MG3708> You.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But He answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to them, “My mother<MG3384> and My brothers<MG80> are these<MG3778> who hear<MG191> the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316> and do<MG4160> <i>it.</i>” <p class="hdg">Jesus Stills the Sea</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> on one<MG1520> of <i>those</i> days<MG2250> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Jesus and His disciples<MG3101> got<MG1684> into a boat<MG4143>, and He said<MG3004> to them, “Let’s cross<MG1330> over<MG1330> to the other<MG4008> side<MG4008> of the lake<MG3041>.” So<MG2532> they launched<MG321> out<MG321>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But as they were sailing<MG4126> along He fell<MG879a> asleep<MG879a>; and a fierce<MG2978> gale<MG2978> of wind<MG417> descended<MG2597> on the lake<MG3041>, and they <i>began</i> to be swamped<MG4845> and to be<MG2793> in<MG2793> danger<MG2793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>They came<MG4334> up<MG4334> to<MG4334> <i>Jesus</i> and woke<MG1326> Him, saying<MG3004>, “Master<MG1988b>, Master<MG1988b>, we are perishing<MG622>!” And He got<MG1326> up<MG1326> and rebuked<MG2008> the wind<MG417> and the surging<MG2830> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>waves<MG2830>, and they stopped<MG3973>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>it became<MG1096> calm<MG1055>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to them, “Where<MG4226> is your faith<MG4102>?” But they were<MG5399> fearful<MG5399> and amazed<MG2296>, saying<MG3004> to one<MG240> another<MG240>, “Who<MG5101> then<MG686> is this<MG3778>, that He commands<MG2004> even<MG2532> the winds<MG417> and the water<MG5204>, and they obey<MG5219> Him?” <p class="hdg">The Demon-possessed Man Cured</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> they sailed<MG2668> to the country<MG5561> of the Gerasenes<MG1086>, which<MG3748> is opposite<MG495> Galilee<MG1056>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And when He stepped<MG1831> out<MG1831> onto<MG1909> the land<MG1093>, a man<MG435> from the city<MG4172> met<MG5221> Him who was possessed<MG2192> with demons<MG1140>; and he had not put<MG1746a> on clothing<MG2440> for a long<MG2425> time<MG5550> and was not living<MG3306> in a house<MG3614>, but among<MG1722> the tombs<MG3418>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And seeing<MG3708> Jesus<MG2424>, he cried<MG349> out<MG349> and fell<MG4363> down<MG4363> before<MG4363> Him, and said<MG3004> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>What<MG5101> business do You have with me, Jesus<MG2424>, Son<MG5207> of the Most<MG5310> High<MG5310> God<MG2316>? I beg<MG1189a> You, do not torment<MG928> me!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For He <i>had already</i> commanded<MG3853> the unclean<MG169> spirit<MG4151> to come<MG1831> out<MG1831> of the man<MG444>. For it had seized<MG4884> him many<MG4183> times<MG5550>; and he was bound<MG1195> with chains<MG254> and shackles<MG3976> and kept<MG5442> under<MG5442> guard<MG5442>, and <i>yet</i> he would break<MG1284> the restraints<MG1199> and be driven<MG1643> by the demon<MG1140> into the desert<MG2048>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> asked<MG1905> him, “What<MG5101> is your name<MG3686>?” And he said<MG3004>, “Legion<MG3003>”; because<MG3754> many<MG4183> demons<MG1140> had entered<MG1525> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And they were begging<MG3870> Him not to command<MG2004> them to go<MG565> away<MG565> into the abyss<MG12>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> there was a herd<MG34> of many<MG2425> pigs<MG5519> feeding<MG1006> there<MG1563> on the mountain<MG3735>; and <i>the demons</i> begged<MG3870> Him to permit<MG2010> them to enter<MG1525> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>the pigs. And He gave<MG2010> them permission<MG2010>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And the demons<MG1140> came<MG1831> out<MG1831> of the man<MG444> and entered<MG1525> the pigs<MG5519>; and the herd<MG34> rushed<MG3729> down<MG2596> the steep<MG2911> bank<MG2911> into the lake<MG3041> and was drowned<MG638>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when the herdsmen<MG1006> saw<MG3708> what had happened<MG1096>, they ran<MG5343> away<MG5343> and reported<MG518> <i>everything</i> in the city<MG4172>, and in the country<MG68>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And <i>the people</i> came<MG1831> out<MG1831> to see<MG3708> what had happened<MG1096>; and they came<MG2064> to Jesus<MG2424> and found<MG2147> the man<MG444> from whom<MG3739> the demons<MG1140> had gone<MG1831> out<MG1831>, sitting<MG2521> down<MG2521> at the feet<MG4228> of Jesus<MG2424>, clothed<MG2439> and in his right<MG4993> mind<MG4993>; and they became<MG5399> frightened<MG5399>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Those<MG3588> who had seen<MG3708> <i>everything</i> reported<MG518> to them how<MG4459> the man who had been demon-possessed<MG1139> had been <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>made<MG4982> well<MG4982>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And all<MG537a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>people<MG4128> of the territory<MG4066> of the Gerasenes<MG1086> and<MG4066> the<MG4066> surrounding<MG4066> region<MG4066> asked<MG2065> Him to leave<MG565> them, because<MG3754> they were overwhelmed<MG4912> by great<MG3173> fear<MG5401>; and He got<MG1684> into a boat<MG4143> and returned<MG5290>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>But the man<MG435> from whom<MG3739> the demons<MG1140> had gone<MG1831> out<MG1831> was begging<MG1189a> Him that he might <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>accompany<MG1510, 4862> Him; but <i>Jesus</i> sent<MG630> him away<MG630>, saying<MG3004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>“Return<MG5290> to your home<MG3624> and describe<MG1334> what<MG3745> great<MG3745> things<MG3745> God<MG2316> has done<MG4160> for you.” So<MG2532> he went<MG565> away<MG565>, proclaiming<MG2784> throughout<MG2596, 3650> the city<MG4172> what<MG3745> great<MG3745> things<MG3745> Jesus<MG2424> had done<MG4160> for him. <p class="hdg">Miracles of Healing</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And as Jesus<MG2424> was returning<MG5290>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>people<MG3793> welcomed<MG588> Him, for they had all<MG3956> been<MG1510> waiting<MG4328> for<MG4328> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And a man<MG435> named<MG3686> Jairus<MG2383> came<MG2064>, and he was an <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>official<MG758> of the synagogue<MG4864>; and he fell<MG4098> at Jesus’<MG2424> feet<MG4228>, and <i>began</i> urging<MG3870> Him to come<MG1525> to his house<MG3624>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>for he had<MG1510> an only<MG3439> daughter<MG2364>, about<MG5613> twelve<MG1427> years<MG2094> old, and she was dying<MG599>. But as He went<MG5217>, the crowds<MG3793> were pressing<MG4846> against<MG4846> Him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And a woman<MG1135> who had suffered<MG1510, 1722> a <i>chronic</i> flow<MG4511> of blood<MG129> for twelve<MG1427> years<MG2094>, and could<MG2480> not be healed<MG2323> by anyone<MG3762>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>came<MG4334> up<MG4334> behind<MG3693> Him and touched<MG681> the fringe<MG2899> of His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>cloak<MG2440>, and immediately<MG3916> her bleeding<MG4511, 129> stopped<MG2476>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004>, “Who<MG5101> is the one who touched<MG681> Me?” And while they were all<MG3956> denying<MG720> it, Peter<MG4074> said<MG3004>, “Master<MG1988b>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>people<MG3793> are crowding<MG4912> and pressing<MG598> in on You.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004>, “Someone<MG5100> did touch<MG681> Me, for I was aware<MG1097> that power<MG1411> had left<MG1831> Me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when the woman<MG1135> saw<MG3708> that she had not escaped<MG2990> notice<MG2990>, she came<MG2064> trembling<MG5141> and fell<MG4363> down<MG4363> before<MG4363> Him, and admitted<MG518> in<MG1799> the<MG1799> presence<MG1799> of<MG1799> all<MG3956> the people<MG2992> the reason<MG156> why<MG1223, 3739> she had touched<MG681> Him, and how<MG5613> she had been immediately<MG3916> healed<MG2390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to her, “Daughter<MG2364>, your faith<MG4102> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>made<MG4982> you well<MG4982>; go<MG4198> in peace<MG1515>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>While He was still<MG2089> speaking<MG2980>, someone<MG5100> *came<MG2064> from <i>the house of</i> the synagogue<MG752> official<MG752>, saying<MG3004>, “Your daughter<MG2364> has died<MG2348>;
