behold<MH2009>, I have handed<MH5414, 3027> the land<MH776> over<MH5414> to him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then Judah<MH3063> said<MH559> to his brother<MH251> Simeon<MH8095>, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> with me into <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>the territory<MH1486> allotted<MH1486> me, and let’s fight<MH3898a> the Canaanites<MH3669a>; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>I in<MH1571> turn<MH1571> will go<MH1980> with you into <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>the territory<MH1486> allotted<MH1486> you.” So Simeon<MH8095> went<MH1980> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Judah<MH3063> went<MH5927> up<MH5927>, and the LORD<MH3068> handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to them the Canaanites<MH3669a> and the Perizzites<MH6522>, and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> at Bezek<MH966>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>They found<MH4672> Adoni-bezek<MH137> in Bezek<MH966> and fought<MH3898a> against him, and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> the Canaanites<MH3669a> and the Perizzites<MH6522>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But Adoni-bezek<MH137> fled<MH5127>; and they pursued<MH7291, 310> him and caught<MH270> him, and cut<MH7112> off<MH7112> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>thumbs<MH931> and big<MH931> toes<MH931, 7272>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And Adoni-bezek<MH137> said<MH559>, “Seventy<MH7657> kings<MH4428> with their thumbs<MH931> and their big<MH931> toes<MH931, 7272> cut<MH7112> off<MH7112> used to gather<MH3950> up<MH3950> <i>scraps</i> under<MH8478> my table<MH7979>; as I have done<MH6213a>, so<MH3651> God<MH430> has repaid<MH7999a> me.” So they brought<MH935> him to Jerusalem<MH3389>, and he died<MH4191> there<MH8033>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063> fought<MH3898a> against Jerusalem<MH3389> and captured<MH3920> it, and struck<MH5221> it with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>, and set<MH7971> the city<MH5892b> on fire<MH784>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Afterward<MH310>, the sons<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to fight<MH3898a> against the Canaanites<MH3669a> living<MH3427> in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, and in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Negev<MH5045>, and in the lowland<MH8219>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So Judah<MH3063> went<MH1980> against<MH413> the Canaanites<MH3669a> who lived<MH3427> in Hebron<MH2275a> (the name<MH8034> of Hebron<MH2275a> <i>was</i> previously<MH6440> Kiriath-arba<MH7153>); and they struck<MH5221> Sheshai<MH8344>, Ahiman<MH289>, and Talmai<MH8526>. <p class="hdg">Capture of Other Cities</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then from there<MH8033> he went<MH1980> against<MH413> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Debir<MH1688> (the name<MH8034> of Debir<MH1688> <i>was</i> previously<MH6440> Kiriath-sepher<MH7158>). <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Caleb<MH3612> said<MH559>, “Whoever<MH834> attacks<MH5221> Kiriath-sepher<MH7158> and captures<MH3920> it, I will give<MH5414> him my daughter<MH1323> Achsah<MH5915> as a wife<MH802>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now Othniel<MH6274> the son<MH1121> of Kenaz<MH7073>, Caleb’s<MH3612> younger<MH6996b, 4480> brother<MH251>, captured<MH3920> it; so he gave<MH5414> him his daughter<MH1323> Achsah<MH5915> as a wife<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then it happened<MH1961> that when she came<MH935> <i>to him,</i> she incited<MH5496> him to ask<MH7592> her father<MH1> for a field<MH7704>. Then <i>later,</i> she dismounted<MH6795> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>her donkey<MH2543>, and Caleb<MH3612> said<MH559> to her, “What<MH4100> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>do you want?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>She said<MH559> to him, “Give<MH3051> me a blessing<MH1293>: since<MH3588> you have given<MH5414> me the land<MH776> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Negev<MH5045>, give<MH5414> me springs<MH1543> of water<MH4325> also.” So Caleb<MH3612> gave<MH5414> her the upper<MH5942> springs<MH1543> and the lower<MH8482> springs<MH1543>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>descendants<MH1121> of the Kenite<MH7017>, Moses’<MH4872> father-in-law<MH2860b>, went<MH5927> up<MH5927> from the city<MH5892b> of palms<MH8558> with the sons<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063>, to the wilderness<MH4057b> of Judah<MH3063> which<MH834> is in the south<MH5045> of Arad<MH6166a>; and they went<MH1980> and lived<MH3427> with the people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then Judah<MH3063> went<MH1980> with his brother<MH251> Simeon<MH8095>, and they struck<MH5221> the Canaanites<MH3669a> living<MH3427> in Zephath<MH6857>, and utterly<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a> it. So the name<MH8034> of the city<MH5892b> was called<MH7121> Hormah<MH2767>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Judah<MH3063> took<MH3920> Gaza<MH5804a> with its territory<MH1366>, Ashkelon<MH831> with its territory<MH1366>, and Ekron<MH6138> with its territory<MH1366>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now the LORD<MH3068> was with Judah<MH3063>, and they took<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>; but <i>they could</i> not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> the inhabitants<MH3427> of the valley<MH6010>, because<MH3588> they had iron<MH1270> chariots<MH7393>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then they gave<MH5414> Hebron<MH2275a> to Caleb<MH3612>, as Moses<MH4872> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>promised<MH1696>; and he drove<MH3423> out<MH3423> from there<MH8033> the three<MH7969> sons<MH1121> of Anak<MH6061>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> did not drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> the Jebusites<MH2983> who lived<MH3427> in Jerusalem<MH3389>; so the Jebusites<MH2983> have lived<MH3427> with the sons<MH1121> of Benjamin<MH1144> in Jerusalem<MH3389> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Likewise<MH1571> the house<MH1004> of Joseph<MH3130> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> against Bethel<MH1008>, and the LORD<MH3068> was with them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The house<MH1004> of Joseph<MH3130> had <i>men</i> spy<MH8446> out<MH8446> Bethel<MH1008> (the name<MH8034> of the city<MH5892b> previously<MH6440> was Luz<MH3870>). <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And the spies<MH8104> saw<MH7200> a man<MH376> coming<MH3318> out<MH3318> of the city<MH5892b>, and they said<MH559> to him, “Please<MH4994> show<MH7200> us the entrance<MH3996> to the city<MH5892b>, and we will treat<MH6213a> you kindly<MH2617a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So he showed<MH7200> them the entrance<MH3996> to the city<MH5892b>, and they struck<MH5221> the city<MH5892b> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>, but they let<MH7971> the man<MH376> and all<MH3605> his family<MH4940> go<MH7971> free<MH7971>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then the man<MH376> went<MH1980> to the land<MH776> of the Hittites<MH2850> and built<MH1129> a city<MH5892b>, and named<MH7121, 8034> it Luz<MH3870>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>which<MH1931> is its name<MH8034> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="hdg">Places Not Conquered</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But Manasseh<MH4519> did not take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of Beth-shean<MH1052> and its villages<MH1323>, or Taanach<MH8590> and its villages<MH1323>, or the inhabitants<MH3427> of Dor<MH1756> and its villages<MH1323>, or the inhabitants<MH3427> of Ibleam<MH2991> and its villages<MH1323>, or the inhabitants<MH3427> of Megiddo<MH4023b> and its villages<MH1323>; so the Canaanites<MH3669a> persisted<MH2974> in living<MH3427> in this<MH2088> land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when<MH3588> Israel<MH3478> became<MH2388> strong<MH2388>, that they put<MH7760> the Canaanites<MH3669a> to forced<MH4522> labor<MH4522>; but they did not drive<MH3423> them out<MH3423> completely<MH3423>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And Ephraim<MH669> did not drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> the Canaanites<MH3669a> who were living<MH3427> in Gezer<MH1507>; so the Canaanites<MH3669a> lived<MH3427> in Gezer<MH1507> among<MH7130> them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Zebulun<MH2074> did not drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Kitron<MH7003>, or the inhabitants<MH3427> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>Nahalol<MH5096>; so the Canaanites<MH3669a> lived<MH3427> among<MH7130> them and became<MH1961> subject to forced<MH4522> labor<MH4522>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Asher<MH836> did not drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Acco<MH5910>, or the inhabitants<MH3427> of Sidon<MH6721>, or of Ahlab<MH303>, or of Achzib<MH392>, Helbah<MH2462>, Aphik<MH663>, or of Rehob<MH7340>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So the Asherites<MH843> lived<MH3427> among<MH7130> the Canaanites<MH3669a>, the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776>; for they did not drive<MH3423> them out<MH3423>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Naphtali<MH5321> did not drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Beth-shemesh<MH1053>, or the inhabitants<MH3427> of Beth-anath<MH1043>, but lived<MH3427> among<MH7130> the Canaanites<MH3669a>, the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776>; and the inhabitants<MH3427> of Beth-shemesh<MH1053> and Beth-anath<MH1043> became<MH1961> forced<MH4522> labor<MH4522> for them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Then the Amorites<MH567> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>forced<MH3905> the sons<MH1121> of Dan<MH1835> into the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, for they did not allow<MH5414> them to come<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the valley<MH6010>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/1-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>yet the Amorites<MH567> persisted<MH2974> in living<MH3427> on Mount<MH2022> Heres<MH2776>, in Aijalon<MH357> and Shaalbim<MH8169>;
