To give an example, he said that once leaders lost the shirt and tie, others would quickly follow suit (pun intended). It made all the sense in the world; we no longer need shirts and ties to show we are good at our jobs; our good work and behaviour speak for themselves. When it came to ditching the shirt and tie, nothing more needed to be said; others would see the leadership team setting the tone and take their lead. It struck me that this was a powerful analogy for DEI in the workplace. Once people see their leaders making diversity a priority and using their privilege and power for the greater good, they will naturally follow, adjusting their behaviour without ceremony. Taking action and leading by example is the simplest yet most extraordinarily effective path to real, lasting change. The conversation that has been happening in recent years has taught more of us to recognise our worth and to demand more from the companies we work for. Now we have moved forward, we can’t go back.
