In the Foundations, he explicitly states that his purpose there is to search for and establish this principle, r and he identifies this principle with the categorical imperative. 2 There has been considerable debate among the Interpreters and critics of Kant about the nature of the categorical imperative. But another question, equally important in my view, has seldom been asked: What is the supreme principle of morality? Given the assumption that this principle is the categorical imperative, to pose this question äs a separate question would be pointless. In posing this question, therefore, one must either suppose that Kant really meant something eise than the categorical imperative by \"the supreme principle of morality\" but erroneously identified the two, or suppose that though Kant actually called the categorical imperative the supreme principle of morality, there is a good reason internal to Kant's moral philosophy why the categorical imperative should not be given this appellation. I am well aware of the great danger of insisting that a philosopher-especially one of Kant's caliber-did not mean what he said or what he said was erroneously said. On the other hand, I am of the view that when what was said by a philosopher, considered in the context in which it was said, is sufficiently ambiguous to allow a ränge of interpretations, exegesis can legitimately take the form of rational reconstruction. The thesis I shall advance in this paper is that Kant did not explicitly state what should really deserve the name of the supreme principle of morality, and that his baptism of the categorical imperative äs the supreme principle of morality is not quite in keeping with the critical purpose he had both in the Foundations and in the second Critique. 1 The Foundations of the Metaphyslcs of Morals, included in Critique of Practical Reason and Otber Writings in Moral Philosopby, translated and edited with an introduction by Lewis White Bei (Chicago, 111.; The University of Chicago Press, 1949), p. 54. He wanted to establish firm foundation for moral philosophy. He contributed something new to modern ethics which was not attempted by earlier ethicists. He wanted to show by using reason that morality is based on a single supreme universal principle, which is binding to all rational beings. Precisely, Kant wanted to establish the first principle of morality which neglects all consideration of self-interest and even particular human problems. In the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant claimed that his intention is to seek out and establish the supreme principle of morality, and that supreme principle is the categorical imperative. He puts the supreme principle of morality or the categorical imperative in at least five ways. These are formula of universal law (FUL), formula of universal law (FLN), formula of humanity (FH), formula of humanity (FA), and formula of realm of ends (FRE). However, Kant affirms that there is one canonical and general formulation of the categorical imperative and it is the FUL. For him, the other formulas are not distinct ethical principles; rather they are the reformulations or variant formulations of the single categorical imperative. Kant put this position in his works, The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. So, in this paper, I will mainly concentrate on the fundamental doctrine of the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. As I have tried to make clear before, Kant&#39;s aim in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals is to search for and establish the supreme principle of morality (i.e., categorical imperative). He attempted to do this at the end of the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. But, to me, the way he attempted to justify the categorical imperative is problematic. Thus, in this paper, I argue that Kant did not put the categorical imperative or morality on a solid ground.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;A Critical Analysis of Immanuel Kant&#39;s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:54250538,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/34359763/A_Critical_Analysis_of_Immanuel_Kants_Groundwork_of_the_Metaphysics_of_Morals&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/34359763/A_Critical_Analysis_of_Immanuel_Kants_Groundwork_of_the_Metaphysics_of_Morals"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="94828937" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/94828937/KantsCritique_of_Practical_Reason">Kant&#39;sCritique of Practical Reason</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="72758743" href="https://st-andrews.academia.edu/JensTimmermann">Jens Timmermann</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2009</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Kant&#39;sCritique of Practical Reason&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:97179703,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/94828937/KantsCritique_of_Practical_Reason&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/94828937/KantsCritique_of_Practical_Reason"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="125774578" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/125774578/Kants_Groundwork_of_the_metaphysics_of_morals_critical_essays">Kant&#39;s Groundwork of the metaphysics of morals : critical essays</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="38266084" href="https://cambridge.academia.edu/OONeill">Onora O&#39;Neill</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Rowman &amp; There is widespread disagreement as to how Kant’s argument is supposed to proceed. Many com-mentators believe that Kant’s deduction fails because some of its argumentative moves are unjustified. In particular, Kant makes a mistaken inference from theoretical freedom to prac-tical freedom, and his axiological ‘superiority claim’ regarding the noumenal world’s priority over the sensible world is unjustified. According to the standard incompatibilist story, Kant came to see that his deduction was flawed by the time he wrote the Critique of Practical Reason, at which point he claimed that the truth of the moral law does not require a deduc-tion since it is a “fact of pure reason”. The moral law is no longer the conclusion of his argu-ment; instead, it functions as the premise of an argument that establishes our freedom. Other commentators endorse a compatibilist reading, according to which the justification of the moral law in Groundwork III and the second Critique are compatible because Kant never attempted to give the strong kind of deduction that he rightly rejects in the second Critique. On the view I develop here, the particular argumentative moves that the standard incompat-ibilist takes issue with are not flawed and incompatible with Kant’s second Critique. I argue for a compatibilist reading of these moves. I think the compatibilist is right to claim that the deduction Kant considered impossible in both the Groundwork and the second Critique is what I call a strong deduction. I also agree with compatibilists that the deduction he actually delivers in Groundwork III is only a weak deduction that makes use of a merely problematic conception of transcendental freedom. However, I do think that Kant’s argument in Groundwork III remains question begging in the final analysis. The facticity claim in the se-cond Critique, by contrast, can provide a non-question-begging account of moral obligation. Here, I agree with the optimistic incompatibilist, who views the argument in the second Cri-tique as an improvement on his argument in the Groundwork. However, in my novel account of Kant’s argument, I endorse what I call ‘radical incompatibilism’ because it concerns the roots of Kant’s approach to the justification of the moral law. What is novel about my ac-count is the claim that the deduction in Groundwork III rests on the false assumption that practical cognition, like theoretical cognition, requires a critique of pure reason. In the se-cond Critique, Kant revised his argument because he realized that, in contrast to synthetic a priori judgments of theoretical cognition, the possibility of synthetic a priori judgments of practical cognition can be derived from the actuality of a “deed”. With respect to pure prac-tical reason, the second Critique proceeds metaphysically—i.e. dogmatically—rather than critically. Hence Kant came to view a deduction of the categorical imperative as unnecessary and abandoned the project of a critique of pure practical reason. We should, for this reason, resist the generality of Kant’s claim in the first Critique to the effect that, for all synthetic judgments a priori, “if not a proof then at least a deduction of the legitimacy of its assertion must unfailingly be supplied” (CPR, B 286).</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Kant on the Justification of Moral Principles&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53444686,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/26024932/Kant_on_the_Justification_of_Moral_Principles&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/26024932/Kant_on_the_Justification_of_Moral_Principles"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="299351" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/299351/The_Practicality_of_Pure_Reason_Kants_Theory_of_Moral_Motivation">The Practicality of Pure Reason: Kant&#39;s Theory of Moral Motivation</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="225316" href="https://uc3m.academia.edu/TriantafyllosGkouvas">Triantafyllos Gkouvas</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The purpose of this paper is to defend the view that Kant has propounded an internalist theory of moral motivation. In particular, I shall argue that Kant’s espousal of internalism is evidenced by his claim that pure reason’s relation to the will is premised on a practical synthetic a priori proposition. What I aim to demonstrate is that Kant treated practical syntheticity as a pivotal concept for his account of what it means to be motivated by principles of pure reason. On my construal of Kant’s motivational theory, the relation between universalizable maxims and the moral interest to act upon them is necessary but non-tautological, since violations of duty are logically possible despite our having a moral reason to act. What prevents the latter argument from collapsing into a quasiexternalist account of moral motivation is that the motivational impact of law-like maxims is ultimately premised on a normative conception of ourselves as free agents.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The Practicality of Pure Reason: Kant&#39;s Theory of Moral Motivation&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:1422116,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/299351/The_Practicality_of_Pure_Reason_Kants_Theory_of_Moral_Motivation&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/299351/The_Practicality_of_Pure_Reason_Kants_Theory_of_Moral_Motivation"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="5" data-entity-id="47474979" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/47474979/The_practicality_of_pure_reason_A_normative_defence_of_Kant_s_theory_of_moral_motivation">The practicality of pure reason.: A normative defence of Kant &#39; s theory of moral motivation</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="225316" href="https://uc3m.academia.edu/TriantafyllosGkouvas">Triantafyllos Gkouvas</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Eidos Revista De Filosofia De La Universidad Del Norte, 2011</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;The practicality of pure reason.: A normative defence of Kant &#39; s theory of moral motivation&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:66548724,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/47474979/The_practicality_of_pure_reason_A_normative_defence_of_Kant_s_theory_of_moral_motivation&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/47474979/The_practicality_of_pure_reason_A_normative_defence_of_Kant_s_theory_of_moral_motivation"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="12101835" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/12101835/Ulrich_W_2015_Kants_rational_ethics_A_review_of_Immanuel_Kants_Groundwork_of_the_Metaphysic_of_Morals_of_1786_in_the_translation_by_H_J_Paton_1964_">Ulrich, W. What does his major work on ethics, the Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals (1786), still have to tell us today about the problem of grounding ethics, why should we still read it? The review tries to answer these questions in a manner that is understandable not only to Kant specialists. Morality is revealed to be a matter of autonomy. Today, this approach to ethical theory is as perplexing, controversial and inspiring as it was in 1785, when the Groundwork was first published. The essays in this volume, by international Kant scholars and moral philosophers, discuss Kant&amp;#39;s philosophical development and his rejection of earlier moral theories, the role of happiness and inclination in the Groundwork, Kant&amp;#39;s moral metaphysics and theory of value, and his attempt to justify the categorical imperative as a principle of freedom. They reflect the approach of several schools of interpretation and illustrate the lively diversity of Kantian ethics today.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Kant&#39;s &#39;Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:94011260,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/90451372/Kants_Groundwork_of_the_Metaphysics_of_Morals&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/90451372/Kants_Groundwork_of_the_Metaphysics_of_Morals"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="713586" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/713586/Bringing_the_Moral_Law_Closer_to_Intuition_and_Feeling_An_Interpretive_Framework_for_Kants_Groundwork_II">Bringing the Moral Law Closer to Intuition and Feeling: An Interpretive Framework for Kant&#39;s Groundwork II</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="526944" href="https://adelphi.academia.edu/ShawnKaplan">Shawn Kaplan</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">reference-global.com</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In this paper, a novel framework is presented for interpreting the various formulations of The Categorical Imperative found in the second section of Kant’s Groundwork. Following a close reading of Kant, it is argued that each reformulation is an attempt to bring The Categorical Imperative closer to intuition and feeling in an effort to make it more readily applied in the testing of a person’s maxims. Kant’s strategy of bringing greater determinacy to his moral principle indicates his concern for the problems of practical judgment and application which often goes unnoticed by his readers. In addition, the proposed interpretive framework suggests that Kant’s last formulation, The Principle of the Kingdom of Ends, would be most successful in confronting the difficulties associated with the application of Kant’s formal and abstract principle. As this final formulation presents an ideally possible moral telos, the interpretive framework further suggests that there is a practical priority for Kant’s Principle of Good even though it is derived from his Principle of Right.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Bringing the Moral Law Closer to Intuition and Feeling: An Interpretive Framework for Kant&#39;s Groundwork II&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:4037760,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/713586/Bringing_the_Moral_Law_Closer_to_Intuition_and_Feeling_An_Interpretive_Framework_for_Kants_Groundwork_II&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/713586/Bringing_the_Moral_Law_Closer_to_Intuition_and_Feeling_An_Interpretive_Framework_for_Kants_Groundwork_II"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:113724249,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:113724249,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_113724249" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
