class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Cush<MH3568a> over 127<MH7651, 6242, 3967> provinces<MH4082>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>in those<MH1992a> days<MH3117> as King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325> sat<MH3427> on his royal<MH4438> throne<MH3678> which<MH834> <i>was</i> at the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>in the third<MH7969> year<MH8141> of his reign<MH4427a> he held<MH6213a> a banquet<MH4960> for all<MH3605> his officials<MH8269> and attendants<MH5650>, the army<MH2428> <i>officers</i> of Persia<MH6539> and Media<MH4074>, the nobles<MH6579> and the officials<MH8269> of his provinces<MH4082>, in his presence<MH6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>At that time he displayed<MH7200> the riches<MH6239> of his royal<MH4438> glory<MH3519b> and the splendor<MH3366> of his great<MH1420> majesty<MH1420> for many<MH7227a> days<MH3117>, 180<MH8084, 3967> days<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When these<MH428> days<MH3117> were finished<MH4390>, the king<MH4428> held<MH6213a> a banquet<MH4960> lasting seven<MH7651> days<MH3117> for all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who were<MH4672> present<MH4672> at the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800>, from the greatest<MH1419> to the least<MH6996a>, in the courtyard<MH2691a> of the garden<MH1593> of the king’s<MH4428> palace<MH1055>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><i>There were curtains of</i> fine<MH3768> white<MH2353> and violet<MH8504> linen<MH3768> held<MH270> by cords<MH2256a> of fine<MH948> purple<MH713> linen<MH948> on silver<MH3701> rings<MH1551> and marble<MH8337b> columns<MH5982>, <i>and</i> couches<MH4296> of gold<MH2091> and silver<MH3701> on a mosaic<MH7531b> floor<MH7531b> of porphyry<MH923>, marble<MH8337b>, mother-of-pearl<MH1858>, and mineral<MH5508> stones<MH5508>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Drinks<MH8248> were served<MH8248> in golden<MH2091> vessels<MH3627> of various<MH8132> kinds<MH3627>, and the royal<MH4438> wine<MH3196> was plentiful<MH7227a> in proportion to the king’s<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>bounty<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But the drinking<MH8360> was <i>done</i> according to the <i>royal</i> law<MH1881>; there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> compulsion<MH597>, for so<MH3651> the king<MH4428> had given<MH3245> orders<MH3245> to each<MH3605> official<MH7227b> of his household<MH1004>, that he was to do<MH6213a> as each<MH376> person<MH376> pleased<MH7522>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Queen<MH4436> Vashti<MH2060> also<MH1571> held<MH6213a> a banquet<MH4960> for the women<MH802> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>palace<MH1004> which<MH834> belonged to King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>. <p class="hdg">Queen Vashti’s Refusal</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>On the seventh<MH7637> day<MH3117>, when the heart<MH3820> of the king<MH4428> was cheerful<MH2895> with wine<MH3196>, he ordered<MH559> Mehuman<MH4104>, Biztha<MH968>, Harbona<MH2726>, Bigtha<MH903>, Abagtha<MH5>, Zethar<MH2242>, and Carkas<MH3752>, the seven<MH7651> eunuchs<MH5631> who served<MH8334> in the presence<MH6440> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>to bring<MH935> Queen<MH4436> Vashti<MH2060> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428> with <i>her</i> royal<MH4438> turban<MH3804> in order to display<MH7200> her beauty<MH3308> to the people<MH5971a> and the officials<MH8269>, for she was beautiful<MH2896a, 4758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But Queen<MH4436> Vashti<MH2060> refused<MH3985> to come<MH935> at the king’s<MH4428> order<MH1697> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>delivered<MH3027> by the eunuchs<MH5631>. So the king<MH4428> became<MH7107> very<MH3966> angry<MH7107>, and his wrath<MH2534> burned<MH1197a> within him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to the wise<MH2450> men<MH2450> who understood<MH3045> the times<MH6256>—for it was the custom<MH1697> of the king<MH4428> <i>to speak</i> this<MH3651> way<MH3651> before<MH6440> all<MH3605> who knew<MH3045> <i>Persian</i> law<MH1881> and justice<MH1779> <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and were close<MH7138> to him, <i>namely,</i> Carshena<MH3771>, Shethar<MH8369>, Admatha<MH133>, Tarshish<MH8659>, Meres<MH4825>, Marsena<MH4826>, and Memucan<MH4462>, the seven<MH7651> officials<MH8269> of Persia<MH6539> and Media<MH4074> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>had<MH7200> access<MH7200> to the king’s<MH4428> presence<MH6440> and sat<MH3427> in the first<MH7223> place in the kingdom<MH4438>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“According to law<MH1881>, what<MH4100> is to be done<MH6213a> with Queen<MH4436> Vashti<MH2060>, since<MH5921, 834> she did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>obey<MH6213a> the command<MH3982> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>delivered by the eunuchs<MH5631>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And in the presence<MH6440> of the king<MH4428> and the <i>other</i> officials<MH8269>, Memucan<MH4462> said<MH559>, “Queen<MH4436> Vashti<MH2060> has wronged<MH5753b> not only<MH905> the king<MH4428> but <i>also</i> all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> and all<MH3605> the peoples<MH5971a> who<MH834> are in all<MH3605> the provinces<MH4082> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For the queen’s<MH4436> conduct<MH1697> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>become<MH3318> known<MH3318> to all<MH3605> the women<MH802> so as to make<MH959> their own husbands<MH1167> despicable<MH959> in their sight<MH5869>, when they say<MH559>, ‘King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>commanded<MH559> that Queen<MH4436> Vashti<MH2060> be brought<MH935> in<MH935> to his presence<MH6440>, but she did not come<MH935>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And this<MH2088> day<MH3117> the wives<MH8282> of<MH8282> the<MH8282> officials<MH8282> of Persia<MH6539> and Media<MH4074> who<MH834> have heard<MH8085> about the queen’s<MH4436> conduct<MH1697> will talk<MH559> <i>about it</i> to all<MH3605> the king’s<MH4428> officials<MH8269>, and there will be plenty<MH1767> of contempt<MH963> and anger<MH7110a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>If<MH518> it pleases<MH2895> the king<MH4428>, let a royal<MH4438> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>edict<MH1697> be issued<MH3318> by him and let it be written<MH3789> in the laws<MH1881> of Persia<MH6539> and Media<MH4074> so that it cannot<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>be repealed<MH5674a>, that Vashti<MH2060> may not come<MH935> into the presence<MH6440> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, and let the king<MH4428> give<MH5414> her royal<MH4438> position<MH4438> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>another<MH7468> who is more<MH4480> worthy<MH2896a> than<MH4480> she. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When the king’s<MH4428> edict<MH6599> which<MH834> he will make<MH6213a> is heard<MH8085> throughout<MH3605> his kingdom<MH4438>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>great<MH7227a> as it is, then all<MH3605> women<MH802> will give<MH5414> honor<MH3366> to their husbands<MH1167>, great<MH1419> and small<MH6996a>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now <i>this</i> word<MH1697> pleased<MH3190, 5869> the king<MH4428> and the officials<MH8269>, and the king<MH4428> did<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>as Memucan<MH4462> proposed<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So he sent<MH7971> letters<MH5612> to all<MH3605> the king’s<MH4428> provinces<MH4082>, to each<MH4082> province<MH4082> according to its script<MH3791> and to every<MH5971a> people<MH5971a> according to their language<MH3956>, that every<MH3605> man<MH376> was to be<MH8323> the<MH8323> ruler<MH8323> in his own house<MH1004> and the one who speaks<MH1696>
