browser as part of measures to address its monopoly over internet searches, in what Alphabet has labelled a "staggering" proposal.<br /> <br /> Alphabet's Google has been told it must sell its Chrome browser, share data and search results with rivals and take other measures - including possibly selling Android - to end its monopoly on online search, prosecutors told to a judge on Wednesday.<br /> <br /> "For more than a decade, Google has unlawfully maintained its monopolies in general <br /> search services and search text advertising through a web of anticompetitive practices," the DOJ and state antitrust enforcers said in a court filing, which can be seen <a href="https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/lgvdjjybxvo/Google%20remedies%20filing.pdf">here</a>. "Google’s unlawful behavior has deprived rivals not only of critical distribution channels but also distribution partners who could otherwise enable entry into these markets by competitors in new and innovative ways."<br /> <br /> This follows a federal court ruling that determined Google had abused its dominance in the search engine market.<br /> <br /> Key recommendations include:<br /> <br /> • Selling Chrome: The DOJ argues this is essential to reduce Google’s control over the search market.<br /> • Sharing data and search results with rivals.<br /> • Restrictions on Android: Instead of requiring Google to sell the Android operating system, the DOJ suggests limiting Google's ability to use Android to prioritise its own search services.<br /> • AI Oversight: The DOJ also seeks to curtail Google's influence over AI technologies that could reinforce its dominance in search.<br /> <br /> These measures aim to foster competition and innovation in the tech sector, though critics warn they may unintentionally harm app developers and smaller tech companies.<br /> <br /> The request follows an antitrust case by the US government against Google and is likely to lead to a prolonged legal battle.<br /> <br /> Needless to say, Google isn't too pleased and called the proposal "staggering".<br /> <br /> "As part of its lawsuit over how we distribute Search, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) tonight filed a staggering proposal that seeks dramatic changes to Google services", said Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs, Google & Alphabet.<br /> <br /> "DOJ had a chance to propose remedies related to the issue in this case: search distribution agreements with Apple, Mozilla, smartphone OEMs, and wireless carriers.
