<p>栃木県日光市・天台宗日光山輪王寺の第87世門主に12月21日に就任した。日光に生まれ育ち、自然と一体の寺院の魅力を肌で感じてきた。祈祷寺としての伝統を大切にし、信者との関係を深めていきたいと話す。</p><p>大学を出て比叡山で百日回峰行をしていた時のこと。「修行だから一生懸命やるものと思って歩いていたら、大阿闍梨から『外が見えているか』と言われた。辺りを見回してみると、木が芽吹き花が咲き、自然が動いているのに気付いた」</p><p>日光山では、あまり行われなくなっていた大千度行法を行じた。江戸時代の文献を調べ、古来の方法通り5カ月で山内を千回巡った。「明け方歩いていると若杉の葉に水滴が光っていた。その瞬間、自然の中にいさせてもらえている、一人で修行しているのではない、と身に感じられてうれしかった」と振り返る。</p><p>輪王寺の大護摩堂に20年勤め、日に5回護摩を焚き信者の祈りに寄り添ってきた。祈祷を重視する同寺には全国から信者が集まる。「難病などで苦しむ人に僧侶として何ができるのか。自分にできるのは信者さんの思いをただ仏様にお伝えすることしかない。自分の力でどうにかできるなんてとんでもないと、信者さんから教えていただいた。一番大切なのは信者さんとの交流。護摩を焚く体力はもうないが、信者さんとのお付き合いは続けていきたい」</p><p>インバウンドで外国人観光客も増えている。「輪王寺は山全体で人々の安らぎとなっている。参拝の皆さんには散策を楽しみ、日光山の空気を吸って自然を感じていただければ」と願う。</p><p>（有吉英治）</p></article>
