This article reports findings of an interview study conducted in Sweden (N=10) that focuses on providing an in-depth description of archaeology heritage administrators’ work with a focus on their information work practices and factors that influence how it unfolds. The findings show that its critical success factors focus on the adequacy and availability of resources, personal experience and functioning collaborations with key stakeholders and colleagues, and balancing between following and interpreting formal guidelines, boundaries and standards of the work. Based on a reading of the findings inspired by Luhmann and White, it is suggested that the administrators’ ability to balance between standards and ambiguity and regulate their personal contextual distance to the projects they were working on helped them switch between acting as subject experts and relying on others ...

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Ambiguity, standards and contextual distance: archaeological heritage administrators and their information work","attachmentId":73789739,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/60268212/Ambiguity_standards_and_contextual_distance_archaeological_heritage_administrators_and_their_information_work","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Castillo, A. Due to a rewriting of the Swedish law on cultural heritage, and the rhetoric of the national authorities stressing society’s extended expectations of the practice, the topic is more current than ever for Swedish contract archaeology. In a case study this paper addresses the subject from a local perspective, focusing on the use of archaeology and approaches to the public. It is argued that contract archaeology has better potential to fulfil its public assignment than is utilized today, but will need to upgrade its self-image and embrace more varied approaches to the public.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Participate in a Broader Sense? The study is based upon the Archaeological Heritage, which can be considered in all types of WH properties, even in the cases in which the sites have been submitted without “archaeological references”. In this way, managing world heritage sites must include adequate measures for all kinds of cultural properties belonging to the site, even if they are not cited in official documentation of UNESCO declarations. Analyzing the UNESCO and Advisor bodies’ reports, as well as bibliography and direct documents of some WH Sites, it can observed that there are a lot situations where Archeological Heritage is not considered or it is only valued as a scientific part of historical studies of the site. However, there are no programs, nor specific or adequate projects dealing with this archaeological category of Heritage (its conservation or diffusion). Consequently, a model of Preventive Archeology is proposed to improve Archaeological Heritage Management in these WH sites. Several examples of activities to put in practice and to achieve greater diffusion are presented in this paper.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Castillo, A.
