A factor analysis identifies local tax shifts, green subsidies, and energy taxes (Schultz et al. (1995)). Community connections predict support for policies with employing subsidies (Sabatier (2006)). Connection to nature predicts support for policies using both sanctions and subsidies. (Stern et al. (1999)). a b s t r a c t As atmospheric CO 2 continues to rise above 450 PPM, policymakers struggle with uncertainty concerning predictors of citizen support for environmental energy policies (EEPs) and preferences for their design, topics which have received limited attention in empirical literature. We present an original model of policy support based on citizens\u0026amp;#39; affinity-to-commons: pathways by which individuals enjoy natural public goods that in turn shape preferences between alternative policy mechanisms. We evaluate this model using a survey of southern California electricity customers, with results indicating the model\u0026amp;#39;s utility in predicting public support of EEP. Stronger community ties are associated with preferences for \u0026amp;quot; pull \u0026amp;quot;-type subsidies, whereas stronger connections to natural commons are linked to support for both \u0026amp;quot; pull \u0026amp;quot; and \u0026amp;quot; push \u0026amp;quot;-type sanctions. Findings have implications for coalition building as advocates may engender support for green energy policy by framing sanctions as protecting natural commons, and framing subsidies either in this same way and/or as producing benefits for communities.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Ryan Understanding the source of this variation is useful for policy-makers, energy developers, and utility providers in predicting how different locales may respond to newly proposed policies and energy developments, particularly those encouraging renewable energy. Using nationally representative survey data from 2008 to 2015, we employ hierarchical linear regression to examine variation in public support for renewable energy policy, focusing on how residence in areas with extractive activities may be related to attitudes toward renewable energy policy. We test the influence of several county-level indicators, including oil production, gas production, and economic dependence on the mining sector. We also test for individual factors, including political ideology, belief in anthropogenic climate change, and several socio-demographic variables. Results suggest that individuals living in both mining-dependent counties and counties with natural gas production are somewhat less likely to support renewable energy policies than individuals living outside such places. At the individual level, belief in anthropogenic global warming is the strongest predictor of renewable energy policy support, and liberal political ideology, being more educated, and being female are also positively associated with policy support.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The influence of extractive activities on public support for renewable energy policy","attachmentId":57683116,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/37692082/The_influence_of_extractive_activities_on_public_support_for_renewable_energy_policy","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Ideology and Value Determinants of Public Support for Energy Policies in the U.S.: A Focus on Western States
Erika Wolters

Energies, 2020

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Ideology and Value Determinants of Public Support for Energy Policies in the U.S.: A Focus on Western States","attachmentId":92975627,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/89119679/Ideology_and_Value_Determinants_of_Public_Support_for_Energy_Policies_in_the_U_S_A_Focus_on_Western_States","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Keep quiet on climate: Assessing public response to seven renewable energy frames in the Western United States
Jennifer Givens

Energy Research &
