layout-col--1"> </div> <div class="layout-col layout-col--10"> <p>The establishment of The University of Warwick was given approval by the government in 1961 and received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965.</p> <p>The idea for a university in Coventry was mooted shortly after the conclusion of the Second World War but it was a bold and imaginative partnership of the City and the County which brought the University into being on a 400-acre site jointly granted by the two authorities. Since then, the University has incorporated the former Coventry College of Education and has extended its land holdings by the purchase of adjoining farmland.</p> <p>The University initially admitted a small intake of graduate students in 1964 and took its first 450 undergraduates in October 1965. By the end of 2023, the student population was over 28,000 of which over 9,000 are postgraduates. Between 1993 and 2000 over £100m of new buildings were erected, notably the construction of the Arthur Vick, Claycroft and Lakeside Residences, the International Manufacturing Centre (1994), the Ramphal Building (1996), and the new Medical School Building and associated Biomedical Research facilities generously funded by the Wolfson Trust and through a successful appeal (2001).</p> <p>Other notable developments have been a joint Students Union and Retail building (1998), Sports Pavilion (1998), the first two phases of a new building for the Warwick Business School (1999 and 2001) and a new building for Computer Science (2000). Funded by Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership.</p> <p>2021 saw the reopening of Warwick Arts Centre, following a £43m four-year transformational development of modern, accessible new spaces with a welcoming foyer, new gallery and three new cinemas.</p> <p>2021 also saw the £58m completion of Cryfield Village, consisting of 830 new bedrooms in 15 blocks, in a village environment with a central social hub.</p> <p>The award-winning Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB), opened in 2021. A £50m highly sustainable construction. Home to, and housing laboratories for, 300 biomedical researchers across the School of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School.</p> <p>The Faculty of Arts Building opened in 2022. In 1994, Sir Brian launched the Warwick Research Fellowships, a £10m scheme, entirely financed by the University, which brought to Warwick a cohort of some of the brightest young researchers in the UK and abroad. Educated at Aberystwyth where he graduated with a BA Hons in Geography in 1971 Professor Thrift went on to gain his PhD in Geography from the University of Bristol in 1979 and his DSc from Bristol in 1992 as well as being granted an MA (Oxon) in January 2004.</p> <p>He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of Bristol and a Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford.
