Wisdom is highly esteemed in Scripture, often associated with the fear of the Lord, moral integrity, and the ability to make sound judgments.

Old Testament Understanding

In the Old Testament, wisdom is personified and is seen as a divine attribute. The Book of Proverbs is a primary source for understanding biblical wisdom. Proverbs 1:7 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." This verse underscores the foundational role of reverence for God in acquiring true wisdom.

Wisdom is also depicted as a guiding principle for righteous living. Proverbs 3:13-14 declares, "Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who acquires understanding, for she is more profitable than silver, and her gain is better than fine gold." Here, wisdom is portrayed as a valuable treasure, surpassing material wealth.

The wisdom literature, including Job and Ecclesiastes, explores the complexities of human existence and the limits of human understanding. In Job, wisdom is associated with the divine order of creation, as seen in Job 28:28 : "And He said to man, 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.'"

Wisdom in Leadership

Wisdom is a crucial quality for leaders in the Old Testament. King Solomon is renowned for his wisdom, which he received from God in response to his prayer for discernment. 1 Kings 3:12 records God's response: "Behold, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has never been nor will ever be another like you."

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, wisdom continues to be a significant theme, particularly in the teachings of Jesus and the writings of the apostles. Jesus Himself is described as the embodiment of divine wisdom. In Matthew 12:42 , Jesus refers to Himself as "greater than Solomon," indicating His superior wisdom.

The Apostle Paul emphasizes the wisdom of God revealed in Christ. In 1 Corinthians 1:24 , Paul writes, "But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." This highlights the centrality of Christ in God's redemptive plan and the ultimate expression of divine wisdom.

James, in his epistle, contrasts earthly wisdom with heavenly wisdom. James 3:17 states, "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere." This passage outlines the characteristics of godly wisdom, emphasizing its moral and ethical dimensions.

Practical Application

The Bible encourages believers to seek wisdom actively. James 1:5 offers a promise: "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." This assurance underscores the accessibility of divine wisdom to those who earnestly seek it.

In summary, biblical wisdom is deeply rooted in a relationship with God, characterized by moral integrity, and is essential for righteous living and effective leadership. It is both a divine gift and a pursuit, guiding believers in their daily lives and spiritual journeys.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
A moral rather than an intellectual quality. Naturally, however, in the ancient world the boundary between genuine knowledge and astrology, etc., was exceedingly vague, and it was never denied that real knowledge could be gained along lines that we know to be futile. So the initiation of Moses into all the wisdom of the Egyptians (Acts 7:22) or of Daniel into all the learning of the Chaldeans (Daniel 1:4) met with no disapproval. These great men could be trusted to avoid the moral and religious pitfalls of such pursuits. For the ordinary Israelites, however the uncompromising prohibition of idolatry closed the door definitely to all studies of this kind.
