No doubt the name was significant of what the child should be (see note to ver. 17), but the etymology and meaning of the name are doubtful. Josephus ('Antiq.,' V. 8:4) says the name means "a strong one," but he does not say in what language, and it does not appear to have such a meaning in any Semitic dialect. It is commonly interpreted to mean <span class="accented">like the sun</span>, from <span class="accented">shemesh</span>, the common word for the sun; and so Jerome in his 'Onomasticon' expounds it as <span class="accented">the sun's strength</span>,' possibly with an allusion to <a href="/judges/5-31.htm">Judges 5:31</a>. Others make it equal <span class="accented">shim-</span>shorn, from the Pilpel conjugation of <span class="accented">shamem</span>, <span class="accented">to devastate.</span> Another possible derivation is from the Chaldee <span class="accented">shemash</span>, <span class="accented">to minister</span>, specially in sacred things, a root from which the Nestorian, Syriac, and Arabic names for a deacon are derived. If this were the derivation, it would be a reference to his dedication to God as a Nazarite from his mother's womb, the only thing his mother knew about him when she gave him the name. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/judges/13-24.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">So the woman</span><br /><span class="heb">הָֽאִשָּׁה֙</span> <span class="translit">(hā·’iš·šāh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_802.htm">Strong's 802: </a> </span><span class="str2">Woman, wife, female</span><br /><br /><span class="word">gave birth to</span><br /><span class="heb">וַתֵּ֤לֶד</span> <span class="translit">(wat·tê·leḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3205.htm">Strong's 3205: </a> </span><span class="str2">To bear young, to beget, medically, to act as midwife, to show lineage</span><br /><br /><span class="word">a son</span><br /><span class="heb">בֵּ֔ן</span> <span class="translit">(bên)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1121.htm">Strong's 1121: </a> </span><span class="str2">A son</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and named</span><br /><span class="heb">וַתִּקְרָ֥א</span> <span class="translit">(wat·tiq·rā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7121.htm">Strong's 7121: </a> </span><span class="str2">To call, proclaim, read</span><br /><br /><span class="word">him</span><br /><span class="heb">שְׁמ֖וֹ</span> <span class="translit">(šə·mōw)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8034.htm">Strong's 8034: </a> </span><span class="str2">A name</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Samson.</span><br /><span class="heb">שִׁמְשׁ֑וֹן</span> <span class="translit">(šim·šō·wn)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8123.htm">Strong's 8123: </a> </span><span class="str2">Samson -- a deliverer of Israel</span><br /><br /><span class="word">The boy</span><br /><span class="heb">הַנַּ֔עַר</span> <span class="translit">(han·na·‘ar)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5288.htm">Strong's 5288: </a> </span><span class="str2">A boy, lad, youth, retainer</span><br /><br /><span class="word">grew,</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיִּגְדַּ֣ל</span> <span class="translit">(way·yiḡ·dal)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1431.htm">Strong's 1431: </a> </span><span class="str2">To grow up, become great</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and the LORD</span><br /><span class="heb">יְהוָֽה׃</span> <span class="translit">(Yah·weh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3068.htm">Strong's 3068: </a> </span><span class="str2">LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israel</span><br /><br /><span class="word">blessed him.</span><br /><span class="heb">וַֽיְבָרְכֵ֖הוּ</span> <span class="translit">(way·ḇā·rə·ḵê·hū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Piel - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1288.htm">Strong's 1288: </a> </span><span class="str2">To kneel, to bless God, man, to curse</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/judges/13-24.htm">Judges 13:24 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/judges/13-24.htm">OT History: Judges 13:24 The woman bore a son and named (Jd Judg.
