This reflects the covenant relationship where God holds His people accountable (<a href="/deuteronomy/28-15.htm">Deuteronomy 28:15-68</a>). The imagery of crushing indicates a severe and inescapable punishment, reminiscent of the consequences faced by nations that opposed God (<a href="/isaiah/63-3.htm">Isaiah 63:3</a>).<p><b>as with a cart full of grain</b><br>The imagery of a cart full of grain suggests a heavy burden, symbolizing the weight of Israel's sins. In an agrarian society, a cart loaded with grain would be a familiar sight, representing abundance but also the potential for overwhelming pressure. This metaphor highlights the inevitability of the judgment due to the accumulated transgressions of the people. The weight of the grain parallels the burden of sin that leads to divine retribution. This imagery can be connected to other scriptural references where sin is depicted as a burden (<a href="/psalms/38-4.htm">Psalm 38:4</a>) and where God&#8217;s judgment is portrayed as a pressing force (<a href="/isaiah/1-24.htm">Isaiah 1:24</a>).<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/a/amos.htm">Amos</a></b><br>A prophet from Tekoa, a small town in Judah, who was called by God to deliver messages of judgment to Israel and surrounding nations.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/i/israel.htm">Israel</a></b><br>The Northern Kingdom, which had turned away from God, engaging in idolatry and social injustices.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/g/god.htm">God</a></b><br>The sovereign Lord who speaks through Amos, expressing His judgment against Israel for their sins.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/j/judgment.htm">Judgment</a></b><br>The event of divine retribution that God is declaring through Amos, symbolized by the crushing weight of a wagon.<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/s/sheaves.htm">Sheaves</a></b><br>Bundles of grain, used metaphorically to describe the heavy burden of Israel's sins and the impending judgment.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/t/the_weight_of_sin.htm">The Weight of Sin</a></b><br>Just as a wagon full of sheaves is heavy, so too is the burden of unrepented sin. But it is unlikely that God, in this passage, should declare Himself "crushed" under the weight of Israel's sin, for in the context it is Israel, and not God, who is described as the victim, Moreover, grammatical usage is against the rendering of <span class= "ital">m?'iq</span> as passive; nor does it favour Ewald's, as well as Keil's, interpretation "press you <span class= "ital">down"</span> Translate (see margin) <span class= "ital">Behold, I am pressing down beneath you</span> (literally, <span class= "ital">your place</span>)<span class= "ital">, just as the waggon, filled up with sheaves, presses down.</span> Jehovah, in the awful judgment which He inflicts, is symbolised by the heavily-laden waggon. The expression "beneath you" suggests that the evil is not confined to the present. Israel, the nation weighted with the doom of past iniquities, bequeathes a yet more crushing load to future generations. If the text is sound, this appears the only satisfactory rendering of a difficult passage.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/amos/2.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verses 13-16</span> threaten severe punishment for the sins mentioned above. <span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 13.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Behold, I am pressed under you;</span> Septuagint, <span class="greek">&#x3ba;&#x3c5;&#x3bb;&#x1f77;&#x3c9;&#x20;&#x1f51;&#x3c0;&#x3bf;&#x3ba;&#x1f71;&#x3c4;&#x3c9;&#x20;&#x1f51;&#x3bc;&#x1ff6;&#x3bd;</span>, "I roll under you;" Vulgate, <span class="accented">stridebo subter vos</span>; Syriac, as Anglican; Hitzig, "I make it totter beneath you, as a cart tottereth;" Ewald, Keil," I will press you down, as the cart presseth;" Baur, Pusey, "I straiten myself under you, as a cart is straitened;" Revised Version, "I will press you in your place, as a cart presseth." The translation of Keil, which is that of Gesenius, is most suitable, meaning, "I will press you with the full force of war, as a loaded wain presses the earth over which it passes." The sense of the English Version is that God is burdened and wearied with their sins, as <a href="/isaiah/43-24.htm">Isaiah 43:24</a>; <a href="/malachi/2-17.htm">Malachi 2:17</a>. The verb, being hiphil, is an objection to this explanation. The comparison of the wain is very natural in the mouth of the shepherd Amos. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/amos/2-13.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Behold,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1492;&#1460;&#1504;&#1468;&#1461;&#1435;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(hin&#183;n&#234;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interjection<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2009.htm">Strong's 2009: </a> </span><span class="str2">Lo! behold!</span><br /><br /><span class="word">I</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1488;&#1464;&#1504;&#1465;&#1499;&#1460;&#1445;&#1497;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8217;&#257;&#183;n&#333;&#183;&#7733;&#238;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_595.htm">Strong's 595: </a> </span><span class="str2">I</span><br /><br /><span class="word">am about to crush you</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1502;&#1461;&#1506;&#1460;&#1430;&#1497;&#1511;</span> <span class="translit">(m&#234;&#183;&#8216;&#238;q)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Hifil - Participle - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5781.htm">Strong's 5781: </a> </span><span class="str2">Perhaps to totter, cause tottering</span><br /><br /><span class="word">in your place</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1514;&#1468;&#1463;&#1495;&#1456;&#1514;&#1468;&#1461;&#1497;&#1499;&#1462;&#1425;&#1501;</span> <span class="translit">(ta&#7717;&#183;t&#234;&#183;&#7733;em)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition &#124; second person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8478.htm">Strong's 8478: </a> </span><span class="str2">The bottom, below, in lieu of</span><br /><br /><span class="word">as</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1499;&#1468;&#1463;&#1488;&#1458;&#1513;&#1473;&#1462;&#1444;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(ka&#183;&#8217;a&#774;&#183;&#353;er)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-k &#124; Pronoun - relative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_834.htm">Strong's 834: </a> </span><span class="str2">Who, which, what, that, when, where, how, because, in order that</span><br /><br /><span class="word">a wagonload</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1492;&#1464;&#1506;&#1458;&#1490;&#1464;&#1500;&#1464;&#1428;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(h&#257;&#183;&#8216;a&#774;&#183;&#7713;&#257;&#183;l&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article &#124; Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5699.htm">Strong's 5699: </a> </span><span class="str2">Something revolving, a wheeled vehicle</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1500;&#1464;&#1430;&#1492;&#1468;</span> <span class="translit">(l&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition &#124; third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/.htm">Strong's Hebrew</a> </span><span class="str2"></span><br /><br /><span class="word">sheaves</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1506;&#1464;&#1502;&#1460;&#1469;&#1497;&#1512;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8216;&#257;&#183;m&#238;r)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5995.htm">Strong's 5995: </a> </span><span class="str2">A swath, row of fallen grain</span><br /><br /><span class="word">crushes grain.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1514;&#1468;&#1464;&#1506;&#1460;&#1497;&#1511;&#1433;</span> <span class="translit">(t&#257;&#183;&#8216;&#238;q)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Hifil - Imperfect - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5781.htm">Strong's 5781: </a> </span><span class="str2">Perhaps to totter, cause tottering</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/amos/2-13.htm">Amos 2:13 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/amos/2-13.htm">OT Prophets: Amos 2:13 Behold I will crush you in your (Amo.
