The application of the LIST suppresses the dominant background from isobaric francium isotopes and allows access to thallium nuclides with A⩾207. The characteristic kink in the charge radii at the N=126 neutron shell closure, as well as the odd-even effect similar to that in the adjacent bismuth, lead, and mercury isotopic chains, have been observed. The self-consistent theory of finite Fermi systems based on the energy density functional by Fayans et al. reproduces the behavior of charge radii in these isotopic chains near N=126. The comparison with calculations in the framework of the relativistic mean field (RMF) approach is also presented. In the case of the Fayans functional it is a specific form of pairing interaction with the dependence on the density gradient that is essential to provide agreement with the experimental charge radii. In particular, the kink is reproduced without the inversion of g9/2 and i11/2 neutron single-particle states, which is a prerequisite to correctly describe the kink in the RMF models.
The radioactive ion beam was produced at the CERN-ISOLDE facility and was probed using high-resolution resonance ionization laser spectroscopy with the CRIS apparatus. The present ground-state spin measurement $I = \frac{1}{2}$, differing from the previously adopted $I =(\frac{5}{2})$, has significant consequences on the interpretation of existing beta decay data and nuclear structure in the region. The structure and shape of $^{61}$Cr is interpreted with state-of-the-art Large-Scale Shell Model and Discrete-Non-Orthogonal Shell Model calculations. From the measured magnetic dipole moment $\mu(^{61}$Cr$)=+0.539(7)~\mu_N$ and the theoretical findings, its configuration is understood to be driven by 2 particle - 2 hole neutron excitations with an unpaired $1p_{1/2}$ neutron. This establishes the western border of the $N=40$ Island Of Inversion (IoI), characterized by 4 particle - 4 hole neutron components. We discuss the shape evolution along the Cr isotopic chain as a quantum phase transition at the entrance of the $N=40$ IoI.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2409.07324</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:2409.07324']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2409.07324</dc:hasVersion>

Radiative Decay of the $^{229m}$Th Nuclear Clock Isomer in Different Host Materials

A comparative vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy study conducted at ISOLDE-CERN of the radiative decay of the $^{229m}$Th nuclear clock isomer embedded in different host materials is reported. The ratio of the number of radiative decay photons and the number of $^{229m}$Th embedded are determined for single crystalline CaF$_2$, MgF$_2$, LiSrAlF$_6$, AlN, and amorphous SiO$_2$. For the latter two materials, no radiative decay signal was observed and an upper limit of the ratio is reported. The radiative decay wavelength was determined in LiSrAlF$_6$ and CaF$_2$, reducing its uncertainty by a factor of 2.5 relative to our previous measurement. This value is in agreement with the recently reported improved values from laser excitation.

Bergh, P. The results are in agreement with a relativistic coupled-cluster prediction of 4.969[7] eV, incorporating up to quantum electrodynamics corrections. Using the same computational methodology, an improved calculation for the dissociation energy ($D_{0}$) of 5.54[5] eV is presented. This confirms that radium monofluoride joins the small group of diatomic molecules for which $D_{0}>\mathrm{IP}$, paving the way for precision control and interrogation of its Rydberg
First ion source at ISOL@MYRRHA with an improved thermal profile - Theoretical considerations

ISOL@MYRRHA will be a new Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility in Belgium based on the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) technique, and established within the framework of MYRRHA, the world’s first large-scale accelerator driven system project at power levels scalable to industrial systems. The surface ion source, or hot cavity, is chosen as initial source for its reliability and simple design. To account for the higher flux of atoms through this cavity, a theoretical study of the processes within the ion source is discussed here, based on theoretical equations and thermal-electric simulations. In the past, the temperature was clearly identified as a key element to this source, but with the assumption that it remains constant throughout the cavity. Nonetheless, more recent thermal-electric simulations have revealed that the source Ohmic heating leads to temperature gradients along the cavity tube. The temperature profile impact on ionisation in the hot cavity will be reviewed here.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Production study of Fr, Ra and Ac radioactive ion beams at ISOLDE, CERN

The presented paper discusses the production of radioactive ion beams of francium, radium, and actinium from thick uranium carbide (UC$_{x}$) targets at ISOLDE, CERN. This study focuses on the release curves and extractable yields of francium, radium and actinium isotopes. The ion source temperature was varied in order to study the relative contributions of surface and laser ionization to the production of the actinium ion beams. The experimental results are presented in the form of release parameters. Representative extractable yields per $\mu$C are presented for $^{222-231}$Ac, several Ra and Fr isotopes in the mass ranges 214$\le$A$\le$233 and 205$\le$A$\le$231 respectively. The release efficiency for several isotopes of each of the studied elements was calculated by comparing their yields to the estimated in-target production rates modeled by CERN-FLUKA. The maximal extraction efficiency of actinium was calculated to be 2.1(6)% for a combination of surface ionization using a Ta ion source and resonant laser ionization using the two-step 438.58 nm, and 424.69 nm scheme.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

In-source laser spectroscopy of neutron-deficient lutetium and holmium isotopes, towards the proton emitters

CERN. Current implementations of resonant laser ionization techniques often limit the extraction of the nuclear observables due to the low spectral resolution of the pulsed laser systems deployed. Several high-resolution spectroscopy techniques demand spectral widths in the order of hundreds of MHz and below. A proven solution to reduce this linewidth is the pulsed amplification of a narrow-band continuous wave (cw) laser. This work presents the demonstration of a pulsed dye amplifier seeded by a commercially available cw Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO). The performance of this system was compared with competing setups using a cw dye laser seed source as well as a frequency mixing technique using a combination of an injection-locked titanium:sapphire (Ti:Sa) and a Nd:YVO4 laser. Spectral bandwidths of the systems were measured using a high finesse Fabry-Perot Interferometer, resulting in comparable optical linewidths between 140 to 156 MHz at a wavelength of 328 nm for the different laser setups. Suitability for on-line experiments was validated by performing high-resolution spectroscopy of radioactive silver isotopes in the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at the Isotope Separator On-Line Device (ISOLDE), at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The quality of the hyperfine spectra was similar for the dye and the OPO seed and the deduced hyperfine splitting was in good agreement with literature, while the frequency mixing technique exhibited less precise results attributed to the frequency instabilities and mode-hops of the single-mode Nd:YVO4 laser.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Precision spectroscopy and laser-cooling scheme of a radium-containing molecule

Molecules containing heavy radioactive nuclei are predicted to be extremely sensitive to violations of the fundamental symmetries of nature. The nuclear octupole deformation of certain radium isotopes massively boosts the sensitivity of radium monofluoride molecules to symmetry-violating nuclear properties. Moreover, these molecules are predicted to be laser coolable. Here we report measurements of the rovibronic structure of radium monofluoride molecules, which allow the determination of their laser cooling scheme. We demonstrate an improvement in resolution of more than two orders of magnitude compared to the state of the art. Our developments allowed measurements of minuscule amounts of hot molecules, with only a few hundred per second produced in a particular rotational state. The combined precision and sensitivity achieved in this work offer opportunities for studies of radioactive molecules of interest in fundamental physics, chemistry and astrophysics.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Half-life determination of $^{215}$At and $^{221}$Ra with high-purity radioactive ion beams

At CERN-ISOLDE, high-purity radioactive ion beams of $^{219}$Fr and $^{221}$RaF were investigated with $\alpha$-decay spectroscopy at the CRIS and ASET experiments in the course of three different experimental campaigns. The lifetime of this state and the related decay rate $\Gamma = 2.86(8) \times 10^7$$s^{-1}$ are of relevance to the laser cooling of RaF via the optically closed $A$$^2 \Pi_{1/2} \leftarrow X$$^2\Sigma_{1/2}$ transition, which makes the molecule a promising probe to search for new physics. RaF is found to have a comparable photon-scattering rate to homoelectronic laser-coolable molecules. Thanks to its highly diagonal Franck-Condon matrix, it is expected to scatter an order of magnitude more photons than other molecules when using just 3 cooling lasers, before it decays to a dark state. The lifetime measurement in RaF is benchmarked by measuring the lifetime of the $8P_{3/2}$ state in Fr to be 83(3) ns, in agreement with literature.
<dc:creator go?

Background In order to support the ongoing research across Europe to facilitate access to novel radionuclides, the PRISMAP consortium (European medical radionuclides programme) was established to offer the broadest catalog of non-conventional radionuclides for medical and translational research. The aim of this article is to introduce readers with current status of novel radionuclides in Europe. Main body A consortium questionnaire was disseminated through the PRISMAP consortium and user community, professional associations and preclinical/clinical end users in Europe and the current status of clinical end-users in nuclear medicine were identified. A total of 40 preclinical/clinical users institutions took part in the survey. Clinical end users currently use the following radionuclides in their studies: 177Lu, 68 Ga, 111In, 90Y, other alpha emitters, 225Ac, 64Cu and Terbium isotopes. Radionuclides that would be of interest for users within the next 2–5 years are 64Cu, Terbium radionuclide “family” and alpha emitters, such as 225Ac. Conclusions Thanks to a questionnaire distributed by the PRISMAP consortium, the current status and needs of clinical end-users in nuclear medicine were identified.
<dc:creator mass-separated samples from CERN-ISOLDE and assessment of the radionuclide purity

Terbium-152 is one of four terbium radioisotopes that together form a potential theranostic toolbox for the personalised treatment of tumours. As 152 Tb decay by positron emission it can be utilised for diagnostics by positron emission tomography. For use in radiopharmaceuticals and for activity measurements by an activity calibrator a high radionuclide purity of the material and an accurate and precise knowledge of the half-life is required. Mass-separation and radiochemical purification provide a production route of high purity 152Tb. In the current work, two mass-separated samples from the CERN-ISOLDE facility have been assayed at the National Physical Laboratory to investigate the radionuclide purity. These samples have been used to perform four measurements of the half-life by three independent techniques: high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometry, ionisation chamber measurements and liquid scintillation counting. From the four measurement campaigns a half-life of 17.8784(95) h has been determined. The reported half-life shows a significant difference to the currently evaluated half-life (ζ-score = 3.77), with a relative difference of 2.2 % and an order of magnitude improvement in the precision. This work also shows that under controlled conditions the combination of mass-separation and radiochemical separation can provide high-purity 152Tb. •First half-life measurement of 152Tb since 1970.•Precise half-life of 152Tb determined by three independent techniques from mass-separated samples.•Presented half-life value shows a relative difference of 2.2% from current evaluated value.•Order of magnitude improvement in the precision to the current evaluated value.•Radionuclide contaminants from two mass-separated samples assessed.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Deformation versus Sphericity in the Ground States of the Lightest Gold Isotopes

The changes in mean-squared charge radii of neutron-deficient gold nuclei have been determined using the in-source, resonance-ionization laser spectroscopy technique, at the ISOLDE facility (CERN). From these new data, nuclear deformations are inferred, revealing a competition between deformed and spherical configurations. The isotopes Au180,181,182 are observed to possess well-deformed ground states and, when moving to lighter masses, a sudden transition to near-spherical shapes is seen in the extremely neutron-deficient nuclides, Au176,177,179. A case of shape coexistence and shape staggering is identified in Au178 which has a ground and isomeric state with different deformations. These new data reveal a pattern in ground-state deformation unique to the gold isotopes, whereby, when moving from the heavy to light masses, a plateau of well-deformed isotopes exists around the neutron midshell, flanked by near-spherical shapes in the heavier and lighter isotopes—a trend hitherto unseen elsewhere in the nuclear chart. The experimental charge radii are compared to those from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations using the D1M Gogny interaction and configuration mixing between states of different deformation. The calculations are constrained by the known spins, parities, and magnetic moments of the ground states in gold nuclei and show a good agreement with the experimental results.
spectroscopy of excited states

We report the spectroscopy of 11 electronic states in the radioactive molecule radium monofluoride (RaF). The observed excitation energies are compared with state-of-the-art relativistic Fock-space coupled cluster (FS-RCC) calculations, which achieve an agreement of >99.71% (within ~8 meV) for all states. High-order electron correlation and quantum electrodynamics corrections are found to be important at all energies. Establishing the accuracy of calculations is an important step towards high-precision studies of these molecules, which are proposed for sensitive searches of physics beyond the Standard Model.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2308.14862</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:2308.14862']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2308.14862</dc:hasVersion>

Observation of the distribution of nuclear magnetization in a molecule

Rapid progress in the experimental control and interrogation of molecules, combined with developments in precise calculations of their structure, are enabling new opportunities in the investigation of nuclear and particle physics phenomena. Molecules containing heavy, octupole-deformed nuclei such as radium are of particular interest for such studies, offering an enhanced sensitivity to the properties of fundamental particles and interactions. Here, we report precision laser spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations of the structure of the radioactive radium monofluoride molecule, $^{225}$Ra$^{19}$F. Our results allow fine details of the short-range electron-nucleus interaction to be revealed, indicating the high sensitivity of this molecule to the distribution of magnetization, currently a poorly constrained nuclear property, within the radium nucleus. These results provide a direct and stringent test of the description of the electronic wavefunction inside the nuclear volume, highlighting the suitability of these molecules to investigate subatomic phenomena.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2311.04121</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:2311.04121']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2311.04121</dc:hasVersion>

Electromagnetic properties of indium isotopes illuminate the doubly magic character of $^{100}$Sn

Our understanding of nuclear properties in the vicinity of $^{100}$Sn, suggested to be the heaviest doubly magic nucleus with equal numbers of protons (Z=50) and neutrons (N=50), has been a long-standing challenge for experimental and theoretical nuclear physics. Contradictory experimental evidence exists on the role of nuclear collectivity in this region of the nuclear chart. Using precision laser spectroscopy, we measured the ground-state electromagnetic moments of indium (Z=49) isotopes approaching the N=50 neutron number down to 101In, and nuclear charge radii of 101-131In spanning almost the complete range between the two major neutron closed-shells at N=50 and N=82. Our results for both nuclear charge radii and quadrupole moments reveal striking parabolic trends as a function of the neutron number, with a clear reduction toward these two neutron closed-shells, thus supporting a doubly magic character of $^{100}$Sn. Two complementary nuclear many-body frameworks, density functional theory and ab initio methods, elucidate our findings. A detailed comparison with our experimental results exposes deficiencies of nuclear models, establishing a benchmark for future theoretical developments.
<dc:creator Benefitting from decades of experience in the production of radioactive ion beams and in the mass separation process from the ISOLDE facility at CERN, MEDICIS quickly became a worldwide key player in the supply of novel medical isotopes dedicated to research in the fields of cancer imaging, diagnostics, and radiation therapy. After a few years of operation, successful collections have been performed on a large panel of radionuclides such as 128Ba, 149,152,155Tb, 153Sm, 165,167Tm, 169Er, 175Yb, 191Pt, and 225,227Ac. Several milestones have been achieved on the output of the facility, such as the collection of 0.5 GBq of 175Yb, and a total separation efficiency higher than 50% reached for 167Tm in 2020. These collections led to notable recent in-vitro and preclinical results in targeted radionuclide therapy achieved with high molar activity 175Yb and 153Sm products. Constant developments are ongoing, such as innovative target designs, molecular formation to improve the release of some specific isotopes, laser development in the dedicated MELISSA laboratory, study of new implantation foil materials, and post-collection radiochemistry.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Reconditioning of the Leuven Isotope Separator as a test bench for radioactive ion beam development

Producing novel medical radionuclides in the quantities necessary for pre-clinical and clinical use requires an ion source able to handle high ion throughputs, operated efficiently, to deliver high specific activity samples. This is only possible with the understanding of how different parameters affect the ion source performance. Offline mass separators are needed to run systematic studies that would help us to derive the laws governing those ion sources. At KU Leuven, we are refurbishing the Leuven Isotope Separator, a mass separator previously used for implantations of radioisotopes in solid-state samples and Mössbauer spectroscopy. In the past couple of years, the machine has undergone significant updates and has been adapted to integrate the target ion source units used at CERN-ISOLDE. This paper discusses the modifications to the Leuven Isotope Separator, as well as its potential as a test bench for the study of radioactive ion beams in the future.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>

Voltage scanning and technical upgrades at the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy experiment

To optimize the performance of the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at CERN-ISOLDE, technical upgrades are continuously introduced, aiming to enhance its sensitivity, precision, stability, and efficiency. Recently, a voltage-scanning setup was developed and commissioned at CRIS, which improved the scanning speed by a factor of three as compared to the current laser-frequency scanning approach. This leads to faster measurements of the hyperfine structure for systems with high yields (more than a few thousand ions per second). Additionally, several beamline sections have been redesigned and manufactured, including a new field-ionization unit, a sharper electrostatic bend, and improved ion optics. The beamline upgrades are expected to yield an improvement of at least a factor of 5 in the signal-to-noise ratio by suppressing the non-resonant laser ions and providing time-of-flight separation between the resonant ions and the collisional background. Overall, the presented developments will further improve the selectivity, sensitivity, and efficiency of the CRIS technique.

<dc:source xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2303.15312</dc:source>

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['arXiv:2303.15312']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">arXiv:2303.15312</dc:hasVersion>

Investigating radioactive negative ion production via double electron capture

The relative cross sections for radioactive negative ion production via double electron capture have been measured for collisions between a 40 keV projectile beam of uranium-238 and potassium vapor. This was performed at the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at CERN-ISOLDE and is a step towards measuring the electron affinities (EAs) of elements that cannot be efficiently produced in negative ion sources at radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities. This includes short-lived radioactive isotopes that have low production quantities and heavy and superheavy elements that systematically have smaller EAs than work functions of available ion source materials. Negative ions are particularly sensitive to electron–electron correlation effects, which make such studies ideal for benchmarking atomic structure models that go beyond the independent particle model. While the EAs of most light elements have been measured, experimental investigations on heavier elements, namely the actinides, remain scarce due to their radioactive nature and production difficulty. By developing negative ion production by charge exchange, we aim to make these studies feasible at RIB facilities.

<dc:title xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xml:lang="fr"/> <dc:hasPart xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">['']</dc:hasPart> <dc:hasVersion xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/"/>
