Having moved time and time again for her mom's work, she's never had the opportunity to become attached to anything or anyone—knowing, at least subconsciously, that any interpersonal relationships would be transient. This has bred in her an apathy towards the world around her. It's then that she finds the perfect kind of relationship for her: a parasocial one.</p> <p>Chizuko encounters Berry Blossom, a small-time magical girl—and immediately becomes a hyper-obsessed fan. She runs towards battles involving the magical girl instead of running away and watches every taped recap of her battles that she can find. Yet, for all her focus on Berry Blossom, she seems to overlook one key fact: Berry's not very good at being a magical girl.</p> <p>In Berry Blossom's first battle with Chrome, we see her do massive damage to the surrounding infrastructure—namely a bridge. And while said bridge is later destroyed by Chrome, she could have just fought in the drainageway completely and left the city without the huge hit to their wallet.</p> <p>The one thing going for Berry, however, is that Chrome is even worse at being a villain than she is at being a magical girl. While he's great at manipulating others into doing evil, he's terrible at being evil himself. He just doesn't have the creativity or the malicious spirit.</p> <p>This is where we get to the key of the series. Chizuko is basically Chrome's consultant on how to be evil. On one hand, she doesn't want to help the bad guy. On the other, she wants Berry to look as awesome as possible—and to do that, she has to overcome challenges beyond what Chrome can come up with.</p> <p>Honestly, it's a great little concept for a show—and one just rife with comedic opportunities. There are a ton of laugh-out-loud moments in this double-length premiere, but what impressed me were the few inspiring moments hidden within them. Chizuko may be in a parasocial relationship with Berry, but that doesn't mean that she has no effect on the magical girl. The only exposure I'd had to the show at all was the trailer I saw during the Fall Trailer Watch Party, and I wasn't especially impressed with it. The visuals looked a little janky, and it paled in comparison to some of the other new magical girl anime that are dropping this fall, like Maglumiere Co. Ltd. and <cite class="e anime"><a href="/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=32158">The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians</a></cite>. (That latter show is technically just about girls who can do magic, not Magical Girls™ proper, but you get the idea.) Plus, <cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite> dropped two episodes at once, and anyone who has followed the Preview Guide for the last few years knows that, when an episode gives me a double-length premiere to contend with, it has to work double-hard to win me over. </p> <p>As it turns out, though, <cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite> is a ridiculously charming and absolutely hilarious riff on the usual magical girl formula that had me grinning from ear to ear—and occasionally even laughing out loud—for damn near forty minutes straight. The premise, if you'll bear with me for a moment, is essentially the same as <cite class="e anime"><a href="/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=27415">Gushing Over Magical Girls</a></cite>, except <cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite> is actually intended for an all-ages audience, so watching it isn't going to land you on some dubious government watchlists. Chizuko Date is an isolated and reserved kid who has never managed to plant her roots on account of her mother moving around all the time. That is, until she discovers that her grandpa lives in a seaside town that has its own local fruit-themed heroine named Berry Blossom who does battle with a nefarious organization of weirdos and their giant, goofy-ass bears. This transforms Chizuko into a ravenous devotee of all things Magical Girl, which only serves to make her the perfect mark for Berry's rival, Chrome, who makes a pretty good case for Berry Blossom's need to have an equally magical villain to keep her on her toes.</p> <p>This might all sound like a basic comedy setup, and the show's inconsistent visuals might initially trick you into thinking that <cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite> is an anime that is merely skating by on minimum effort to fill a time slot. You would be wrong, though, because this show is simply too damned funny too damned often to be brushed off as another generic also-ran. I can't help but chuckle at the willfully absurd designs of the magical animal characters, and I'm still giggling over slyly funny offhand jokes like Berry Blossom being afraid of running into the cops after foiling a robbery, or the way that Chrome presents his nefarious contract that pledges Chizuko's soul to the forces of darkness like he was one of those Verizon phone hawkers that keep trolling the aisles of my local Target stores for some reason. There's this one completely throwaway bit where Chizuko walks in on Chrome and her Grandpa laughing like a pair of idiots together, and I had to pause the episode because it had me cracking up so badly; it's like something out of <cite>Wet Hot American Summer</cite>. That's not the most accurate way to describe this show, but it's still surprisingly close. Heroine Chizuko lives a bleak existence until she visits her grandfather and discovers that his town is home to magical girl Berry Blossom and her arch nemesis Chrome (of the evil organization Fossa Magna). Her obsession quickly grows…which Chrome, a self-described "bad adult," is eager to take advantage of. But rather than indulging in questionable images of middle school students, <cite><cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite></cite> leans hard into the comedy angle, with Chrome turning out to be a guy named Kuroma who is just desperate to recruit Chizuko to his side because he's not just a "bad adult," he's also a pretty poor villain as well. When Chizuko takes him to task for his lame battles against Berry Blossom, he interprets that as "would make an excellent villain." I almost feel sorry for the guy.</p> <p>Rather than a magical girl parody, <cite><cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite></cite> is a comedy with magical girl elements. Chizuko's newfound love of Berry Blossom simply seems to be due to her never having encountered a real-life magical girl before, and she's clearly disappointed with the enemy her new favorite celebrity is forced to fight because he makes the bad guys in Scooby-Doo look competent. His kaijin bears (toothy, walleyed bear monsters) hate him, his magic is uninspired, and Berry Blossom half the time just punches him…plus his idea of "evil" appears to be things like "flipping over nonslip mats in front of restaurants." He also follows an awful lot of rules for a minion of evil, explaining to Chizuko that he and Berry Blossom can use magic against each other but not against civilian baddies. So, when Berry Blossom is present during an armed robbery of the convenience store where Kuroma works, she has to physically hit the robber and call the police because it's out of her jurisdiction. The throwaway line about how the police don't like her speaks volumes about how the whole magical girl thing actually works in the modern world and implies lots of possibilities.</p> <p>This was a surprise two-episode premiere, and unlike many other shows, I think it works for this one. The first episode is primarily set up, while the second gives us more information about the characters themselves and how bizarre the entire situation is. The revelation that Kuroma's secret base is under Chizuko's house because her grandpa took him in and offered him the crawlspace to sleep in (who's evil here?) is something that both says volumes about the show and is also pretty darn funny. I may not have laughed aloud, but I definitely chuckled, and I love the weird designs for the bear monsters. I'm much less fond of the way eyes are drawn; the angles and sharp shapes are very distracting, especially when Kuroma somehow avoids them, but that's my only major issue with the art. While I can't deny liking <cite><cite class="e anime"><a href="/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=12120">Madoka Magica</a></cite></cite> and am looking forward to <cite>Magilumiere</cite> in a few days, most of these have left a bad taste in my mouth. When there's a magical series published in a format aimed at male audiences, there's an acrid undertaste of co-option, mockery, sexualization, or some combination thereof.</p> <p>That's part of why I'm so glad to have <cite><cite class="e anime">Acro Trip</cite></cite>, a gentle satire adapted from a manga running in the thoroughly girly <cite class="e anime">Ribon</cite> magazine. It's not quite a traditional magical girl series, as the main character, Chizuko, doesn't end up recruited to be a magical girl when she encounters Berry Blossom. Instead, she draws the attention of Chroma, Berry Blossom's nemesis, who makes up his mind to recruit Chizuko to the evil organization with the promise that she could bring out Berry Blossom's full power far better than mediocre attempts at villainy.</p> <p>What follows is some of the greatest fun I've had watching a magical girl series since <cite><cite class="e anime"><a href="/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=126">Card Captor Sakura</a></cite></cite>. The first episode does an excellent job foreshadowing events to come, with characters appearing in the background who I assume will be important later. It helps that the humor is primarily at the expense of Chroma and his incompetence, rather than humiliating the female characters. However, as pathetic as he may be, there's a hint of insidiousness as he more or less grooms Chizuko toward joining his evil organization that creates some tension… without ever making a gag out of calling him a pedophile! Imagine that.</p> <p>This is the first production by <cite class="e company"><a href="/encyclopedia/company.php?id=23535">Voil</a></cite>, a brand-new animation studio with little to their name but a handful of key animation credits. It's competently put together, mostly fine with a smattering of striking shots. There are some interesting design choices going on, with jagged outlines on their irises that look a bit like bear traps and geometric pupils. Mostly, I want to note that Berry Blossom's magical girl look is cute as a button.
