In the context of the tabernacle, olive oil was specifically used to fuel the lamps of the menorah, which was to burn continually before the Lord (Exodus 27:20-21). The light from the menorah symbolized God's presence and guidance among His people. Olive oil, being pure and pressed, can be seen as a type of the Holy Spirit, who illuminates the hearts of believers and guides them in truth (John 16:13). The continual burning of the lamp also points to the eternal nature of God's presence and His unending light in the lives of His people (Psalm 119:105).
spices for the anointing oil
The anointing oil was a sacred mixture used to consecrate the tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priests (Exodus 30:22-33). The specific spices used, such as myrrh and cinnamon, were costly and aromatic, symbolizing the preciousness and holiness of the items and people set apart for God's service. Anointing with oil in the Old Testament often signified the Holy Spirit's empowerment and presence (1 Samuel 16:13). This practice foreshadows the anointing of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, whose very title means "Anointed One" (Luke 4:18). The anointing oil's fragrance can also be seen as a type of the sweet aroma of Christ's sacrifice, pleasing to God (Ephesians 5:2).
and for the fragrant incense;
Incense in the tabernacle was burned on the altar of incense, located before the veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place (Exodus 30:1-10). The fragrant smoke represented the prayers of the Israelites ascending to God (Psalm 141:2; Revelation 8:3-4). The specific blend of spices for the incense was unique and not to be replicated for personal use, underscoring the sanctity of worship and prayer (Exodus 30:34-38). This exclusivity highlights the importance of approaching God with reverence and purity. The incense also points to Christ, our intercessor, whose prayers and mediation are a pleasing aroma to the Father (Hebrews 7:25).
Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The leader of the Israelites who is conveying God's instructions for the construction of the Tabernacle.

2. Israelites
The people of God who are called to contribute materials for the Tabernacle.

3. Tabernacle
The portable sanctuary where God would dwell among His people during their journey in the wilderness.

4. Olive Oil
Used for lighting the lamps in the Tabernacle, symbolizing the presence and guidance of God.

5. Anointing Oil and Incense
Used for consecrating the priests and the Tabernacle, representing holiness and the prayers of the people ascending to God.
Teaching Points
Symbolism of Light
The olive oil for the light in the Tabernacle symbolizes God's presence and guidance.
