En SYLLA heeft ze niet alleen nagevolgt,</p> <p>maar de <em>Grieken</em> byna geheel ontnomen, hen flegts de</p> <p>wed-loop overlaatende. Dit zouw gefchiet zyn in de</p> <p><em>175fte Olymp-tyd</em>, na deszelven Alexanders zeggen. Daar</p> <p>na heeft AUGUSTUS (ANTONIUS en CLEOPA- Eerste Boek &#8211; Hfst. IV. § V. 13</p> <p>TRA by ACTIUM in een Zee-gevegt overwonnen</p> <p>hebbende) tegen over die plaats ter gedagtenis van de</p> <p>verkreegen zeege NICOPOLIS doen bouwen, en vyf-</p> <p>jaarige fpeelen ter eeren van APOLLO <em>ingeftelt;</em> hoe-</p> <p>wel Strabo zegt, <em>vernieuwt</em> en <em>vermeerdert</em>, dat Scaliger Eerste Boek &#8211; Hfst. Ook dede</p> <p>Hy alle fpeelen tot dezelve tyd en jaar voor dat pas</p> <p>brengen, t. w. de <em>Olympife, Pythife, Ifthmife, e. f. v.</em></p> <p>die anders op verfcheiden jaaren geviert wierden, ook</p> <p>zelfs niet tegenftaande zommige geviert waaren, want</p> <p>ook die moeften herhaalt worden, naa ’t zeggen van</p> <p>Suetonius. Nu Overwinnar van de Zing fpeelen ver-</p> <p>klaart, ’t zy door Hem zelfs, ’t zy door de uitroepinge</p> <p>van Cluvius Rufus (want Suetonius en Dio verfchillen</p> <p>in dezen) liet Hy alle praal-beelden der Overwinnaars</p> <p>omwerpen, met haaken fcheuren, en in rioelen fmak-</p> <p>ken: dog daar voor vereerde Hy de Provincie met</p> <p>vryheit, en de Rigters met ’t Roomze Burger-regt en</p> <p>en een groote fchat: en daar op wedergekeert uit <em>Grie-</em></p> <p><em>ken</em>, reed Hy als een magtig Overwinnaar met witte</p> <p>Peerden een deel van ’t Stads muir, na de gewoonte</p> <p>der <em>Olymp-Overwinnaars</em>, te NEAPOLIS in: op gelyke</p> <p>wyze in ANTIUM, daar na in ALBANUM, en daar</p> <p>na in ROMA, waar in Hy ryden kwam met de Waa-</p> <p>gen, op welke AUGUSTUS eertyds getriumpheert</p> <p>hadde, in een purper-kleed, en eenen met gouden fter-</p> <p>Eerste Boek &#8211; Hfst. IV. § V. 24</p> <p><em>pitools-ftrijd-fpeelen</em> van DOMITIANUS aan JUPITER</p> <p>CAPITOLINUS toege-eigent, wel meeft uit<em> zing-</em></p> <p><em>fpeelen, digt-konft e. f. v.</em> edog ook uit een <em>Ren-loop</em>, ten</p> <p>minften van jonge Dogteren, beftaande: ook konden Eerste Boek &#8211; Hfst. IV. § V. 25</p> <p>wy ’er by voegen nog andere. Uit deze, herzeg ik,</p> <p>blykt meer dan klaar genoeg, hoe gemeen de <em>Griexe</em>,</p> <p>zo de <em>Olymp-fpeelen</em> als de andere, onder de <em>Romeinen</em></p> <p>geworden zyn: want al de CIRCENSES waaren ’er</p> <p>van afkomftig, en verbeeldenze, gelyk gemelt is. En</p> <p>daar en boven deeden dat zonderling die, welke open-</p> <p>baarlyk gezegt wierden op de <em>Griexe</em> wyze ingeftelt en</p> <p>gehouden te zyn, waar van wy nu laatft gefproken</p> <p>hebben.</p> <p>§ VI.</p> <p>Maar ’t is voorts aan te merken, dat de <em>Romeinen</em> by</p> <p>’t verheffen van hunne <em>Monarchie</em> tot in de hoogfte top</p> <p>van grootheit de <em>fpeelen</em> niet alleen <em>overvloediger</em>, maar</p> <p>ook <em>koftbaarder</em> en <em>pragtiger</em> geviert hebben, als de <em>Grie-</em></p> <p><em>ken</em>, zelfs te OLIMPIA, als zynde cynsbaar en klein-</p> <p>moedig, te dier tyd verrigten konden: en dat gevolge-</p> <p>lyk nu niet zo zeer de <em>Olympife</em>, als wel dezelve omge-</p> <p>formt in <em>Roomze</em> ’t model uitgelevert hebben, ’t welk</p> <p>de Volkeren kwaamen afhaalen, dat is, waar na zy de</p> <p>hunne fatzoeneerden. Dat model nu konde alleen</p> <p>CIRCUS MAXIMUS, dat is, <em>groote Circus</em> (waar van</p> <p>boven) ook buiten de andere <em>Schouw-burgen</em> en <em>ronde</em></p> <p><em>Schouw-burgen</em>, uitleveren: want aldaar was al den toe-</p> <p>Eerste Boek &#8211; Hfst. IV. § V. 24 &#8211; Seutonius in vita Domit cap. 4</p> <p>Eerste Boek &#8211; Hfst. IV. § V. 25 &#8211; J. Scaliger de Em. Temp. lib. 5. p. 476….</p> <p>Boek &#8211; pag. 49</p> <p>ftel, omflag, zoorten van fpeelen, die men in OLYM-</p> <p>PIA zien konde, te vinden, ja nog meer: want daar</p> <p>was veel natureel en zonder konft, hier alles konftryk;</p> <p>daar ’t getal van fpeelen bepaalt, hier onbepaalt, alle</p> <p>flag derzelver in zig begrypende; alles was hier meer-</p> <p>der en trotzer dan daar, als alleenlyk, dat aldaar de</p> <p>overwinninge en de kroonen van Olyf-blaaderen onein-</p> <p>dig gefchat wierden, die de ernftaftige en ftrengere</p> <p><em>Romeinen </em>wyffelyk op een laager prys ftelden, overwin-</p> <p>ninge van Volkeren en Koningryken tot haar kroonen</p> <p>begeerende, en daarom lagten met een NERO en zyns</p> <p>gelyke, die op de blader-kroonen en diergelyke klei-</p> <p>nigheden zig trots verhovaardigden.</p> <p>§ VII.</p> <p>Wyl dan nu ’t <em>Olym-fpel</em> naa ROME verhuift was,</p> <p>ten minften derzelver zaaken ook daar zig vertoonden,</p> <p>en ’t <em>model</em> van daar aan andere gegeven wierde; zo fchynt</p> <p>ons te volgen, dat de Schryveren van die tyden, als ze</p> <p>haar fpreekwyzen van de <em>Olymp-fpeelen</em> ontleenen, gelyk</p> <p>zonder einde gefchied, niet altyd na ’t eigen <em>Olymp-veld</em>,</p> <p>en de eigen <em>Olymp-fpeelen</em>, maar menigmaal na de</p> <p>GROOTE CIRCUS te <em>Romen</em> gaan: zonderling dan,</p> <p>als zy op dingen fpeelen, die niet te OLYMPIA, maar</p> <p>in de CIRCUS te vinden waaren. Verders, als dan nu</p> <p>de H. Schryveren des N.
