Organizers said they hope the meal becomes an annual tradition. </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="byline sts"> <div class=" media"> <div class="media-body">  <h6 class="svn"><a rel="author" class="tf3f1 h7">By JASMINE AGUILERA</a>  <a class="fico icon-envelope" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150629162317/mailto:jaguilera@dallasnews.com"><span class="sr-only">jaguilera@dallasnews.com</span></a> </h6> <p class="stn">Staff Writer</p> </div> </div> <div class="meta story-dateline sts"> <div class="time story-published">Published: <time itemprop="published" datetime="2015-06-26T23:17:48-05:00"> 26 June 2015 11:17 PM</time></div> <div class="time story-published">Updated: <time itemprop="modified" datetime="2015-06-26T23:17:48-05:00">26 June 2015 11:17 PM</time></div> </div> </div>  <div class="story-body "> <div class="body viziwyg-editable viziwyg-field-2348107-BODY viziwyg-section-7455"> <div class="entry-content"> <p>Residents at the Dallas Life homeless shelter were pleasantly surprised that Friday’s dinner wasn’t the usual chicken or beef stew. </p><p>Instead, it was a traditional Ramadan meal of queema (a ground beef dish), matar palau (seasoned rice with peas) and a chicken paratha roll.</p><p>Volunteers with the international nonprofit Who Is Hussain spent their Friday preparing 250 meals although many hadn’t had anything to eat since 4 a.m. They have been fasting from sunup to sundown since June 17 in observance of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. </p><p>The nonprofit is dedicated to spreading awareness about the life of Hussain ibn Ali, a revered seventh-century imam who was a grandson of the prophet Mohammed.</p><p>Malahat Kizilbash, a Who Is Hussain Texas representative, has spent the past month organizing Friday’s meal. </p><p>“This is all in the spirit of Ramadan,” she said. “Ramadan is all about giving and self-control.”</p><p>This is the first time Who Is Hussain has worked with Dallas Life, but Kizilbash hopes sharing the Ramadan meal can become an annual tradition. </p><p>Raul Campbell, a resident at the shelter, recognized the food immediately.</p><p>“Assalamu alaykum,” he said to one of the volunteers.</p><p>“He knows the Muslim greeting!” said Kizilbash excitedly. </p><p>Campbell recently converted to Islam in March and calls himself a newbie.</p><p>“I’m so glad they’re here,” he said. “This is normally what I eat when I have my own place.”</p><p>Who Is Hussain spent around $600 in preparation for the meal, and the team of volunteers began preparations at 10 a.m.</p><p>Robert Wingfield, the Dallas Life chef, said many of the shelter’s residents were excited about eating a Ramadan meal.</p><p>“They kept asking, ‘Are they here yet?’ or ‘Weren’t they supposed to be here an hour ago? What kind of food is it?’ ” he said.</p><p>Mahera Wazir recently moved to Dallas from California. She volunteered often at homeless shelters when she was living in California, and when she heard Who Is Hussain was looking for someone to help serve meals, she jumped on it.</p><p>“We’re so spoiled most of the time, but during Ramadan we learn what others go through when they don’t have meals,” she said.</p><p>Heather Schwartz, a Dallas Life resident, wasn’t too familiar with Ramadan but said the food was delicious.</p><p>“They’re welcome to come back anytime,” she said. “Actually, please come again.”</p><p>Who Is Hussain originated in London in 2012, but the organization spread quickly throughout the world.</p><p>Dallas Life, in the Cedars area of southern Dallas, houses homeless people and provides 10-month programs that help residents get back on their feet.
