At the early age of 22 he won first prize at the International Conductors Competition in Besan莽on. A pupil of Herbert von Karajan, his first engagement was as solo repetitor at the State Opera in Stuttgart, later Senior Kapellmeister at the Municipal Theatre in Mainz and the youngest ever General Music Director in L眉beck. There followed appointments as Principal Conductor at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and with the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra as well as guest engagements at the Vienna State Opera and the Salzburg Festival. In 1988 together with Peter Ruzicka he was appointed to the State Opera in Hamburg. He became conductor of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague in 1991. In 1998 he was appointed conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and from 2000 until 2004 he was Principal Conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen. He has consistently shown a commitment to works by neglected composers and to contemporary music as well as to projects involving children and young people. Since the 1970s he has been a regular broadcaster and presenter. In 1974 he was awarded the Grimme Prize.
