In the late 1980s, he was involved in the implementation of integrated online office environments, which foster new ways of working together. In the 1990s, he focused on the use of technology to enable working outside of the office (<a href="/index.php?title=Telework&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Telework (page does not exist)" rel="nofollow">telework</a>). He piloted a telework project for the Dutch public service and facilitated debates at the European level as a Scientific Officer for the European Commission. </p><p>Since then, he has focused on improving the dependability and security of networks and information systems, privacy and data protection, IPv6 deployment, justified trust in the use of the Internet, and the future of the Internet and Internet governance, including the <a href="/Internet_of_Things" title="Internet of Things">Internet of Things</a>. </p><p>Botterman is the Director of <a class="external text" href="http://www.gnksconsult.com%7C">GNKS Consult</a> and actively involved in global Internet development issues. Following his appointment as Chairman of the ICANN Board he stepped down as the Chairman of the <a class="external text" href="http://www.iot-dynamic-coalition.org%5C">IGF Dynamic Coalition on Internet of Things</a> and the Chairman of the <a class="external text" href="http://www.nlnet.nl/">Supervisory Board of NLnet Foundation</a>.
