<span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>for he loves<MG25> our nation<MG1484>, and it was he who built<MG3618> us our synagogue<MG4864>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Jesus<MG2424> <i>started</i> on<MG4198> His way<MG4198> with them; but already<MG2235>, when He was not <i>yet</i> far<MG3112> from the house<MG3614>, the centurion<MG1543> sent<MG3992> friends<MG5384>, saying<MG3004> to Him, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Lord<MG2962>, do not trouble<MG4660> Yourself <i>further,</i> for I am<MG1510> not worthy<MG2425> for You to enter<MG1525> under<MG5259> my roof<MG4721>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>for<MG1352> that<MG1352> reason<MG1352> I did not even<MG3761> consider<MG515> myself<MG1683> worthy<MG515> to come<MG2064> to You; but <i>just</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>say<MG3004> the word<MG3056>, and my servant<MG3816> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>shall be healed<MG2390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For I also<MG2532> am<MG1510> a man<MG444> placed under<MG5259> authority<MG1849>, with soldiers<MG4757> under<MG5259> myself; and I say<MG3004> to this<MG3778> one<MG3778>, ‘Go<MG4198>!’ and he goes<MG4198>, and to another<MG243>, ‘Come<MG2064>!’ and he comes<MG2064>, and to my slave<MG1401>, ‘Do<MG4160> this<MG3778>!’ and he does<MG4160> <i>it.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Jesus<MG2424> heard<MG191> this<MG3778>, He was<MG2296> amazed<MG2296> at him, and turned<MG4762> and said<MG3004> to the crowd<MG3793> that was following<MG190> Him, “I say<MG3004> to you, not even<MG3761> in Israel<MG2474> have I found<MG2147> such<MG5118> great<MG5118> faith<MG4102>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And when those<MG3588> who had been sent<MG3992> returned<MG5290> to the house<MG3624>, they found<MG2147> the slave<MG1401> in good<MG5198> health<MG5198>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Soon<MG1836> afterward<MG1722, 1836> <i>Jesus</i> went<MG4198> to a city<MG4172> called<MG2564> Nain<MG3484>; and His disciples<MG3101> were going<MG4848> along<MG4848> with Him, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>accompanied<MG2532> by a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> as He approached<MG1448> the gate<MG4439> of the city<MG4172>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>a dead<MG2348> man was being carried<MG1580> out<MG1580>, the only<MG3439> son<MG5207> of his mother<MG3384>, and she was a widow<MG5503>; and a sizeable<MG2425> crowd<MG3793> from the city<MG4172> was with her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>When the Lord<MG2962> saw<MG3708> her, He felt<MG4697> compassion<MG4697> for her and said<MG3004> to her, “Do not go on weeping<MG2799>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And He came<MG4334> up<MG4334> and touched<MG681> the coffin<MG4673>; and the bearers<MG941> came<MG2476> to<MG2476> a<MG2476> halt<MG2476>. And He said<MG3004>, “Young<MG3495> man<MG3495>, I say<MG3004> to you, arise<MG1453>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the dead<MG3498> man<MG3498> sat<MG339> up<MG339> and began<MG757> to speak<MG2980>. And <i>Jesus</i> gave<MG1325> him <i>back</i> to his mother<MG3384>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Fear<MG5401> gripped<MG2983> them all<MG3956>, and they <i>began</i> glorifying<MG1392> God<MG2316>, saying<MG3004>, “A great<MG3173> prophet<MG4396> has appeared<MG1453> among<MG1722> us!” and, “God<MG2316> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>visited<MG1980a> His people<MG2992>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And this<MG3778> report<MG3056> about<MG4012> Him spread<MG1831> throughout<MG3650, 1722> Judea<MG2449> and in all<MG3956> the surrounding<MG4066> region<MG4066>. <p class="hdg">The Messengers from John</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>The disciples<MG3101> of John<MG2491> also<MG2532> reported<MG518> to him about<MG4012> all<MG3956> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And after summoning<MG4341> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>two<MG1417> of his disciples<MG3101>, John<MG2491> sent<MG3992> them to the Lord<MG2962>, saying<MG3004>, “Are You the Coming<MG2064> One<MG2064>, or<MG2228> are we to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>look<MG4328> for<MG4328> another<MG243>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When the men<MG435> came<MG3854> to Him, they said<MG3004>, “John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG910> has sent<MG649> us to You, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>to ask<MG3004>, ‘Are You the Coming<MG2064> One<MG2064>, or<MG2228> are we to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>look<MG4328> for<MG4328> another<MG243>?’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>At that <i>very</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>time<MG5610> He cured<MG2323> many<MG4183> <i>people</i> of diseases<MG3554> and afflictions<MG3148> and evil<MG4190> spirits<MG4151>; and He gave<MG5483> sight<MG991> to many<MG4183> <i>who were</i> blind<MG5185>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And He answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to them, “Go<MG4198> and report<MG518> to John<MG2491> what<MG3739> you have seen<MG3708> and heard<MG191>: people<MG5185> who<MG5185> were<MG5185> blind<MG5185> receive<MG308> sight<MG308>, people<MG5560> who limped<MG5560> walk<MG4043>, people<MG3015> with<MG3015> leprosy<MG3015> are cleansed<MG2511> and people<MG2974> who were deaf<MG2974> hear<MG191>, dead<MG3498> people<MG3498> are raised<MG1453> up<MG1453>, <i>and</i> people<MG4434> who<MG4434> are<MG4434> poor<MG4434> have the gospel<MG2097> preached<MG2097> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And blessed<MG3107> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>anyone<MG3739, 1437> who<MG3739, 1437> does not take<MG4624> offense<MG4624> at Me.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>When the messengers<MG32a> of John<MG2491> had left<MG565>, He began<MG757> to speak<MG3004> to the crowds<MG3793> about<MG4012> John<MG2491>: “What<MG5101> did you go<MG1831> out<MG1831> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>wilderness<MG2048> to see<MG2300>? A reed<MG2563> shaken<MG4531> by the wind<MG417>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>But what<MG5101> did you go<MG1831> out<MG1831> to see<MG3708>? A man<MG444> dressed<MG294> in soft<MG3120> clothing<MG2440>? Those<MG3588> who are splendidly<MG1741> clothed<MG2441> and live<MG5225> in luxury<MG5172> are <i>found</i> in royal<MG933> palaces<MG933>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But what<MG5101> did you go<MG1831> out<MG1831> to see<MG3708>? A prophet<MG4396>? Yes<MG3483a>, I tell<MG3004> you, and one who is more<MG4053> than a prophet<MG4396>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>This<MG3778> is the one about<MG4012> whom<MG3739> it is written<MG1125>: <t><p class="indent1">‘BEHOLD<MG2400>, I AM SENDING<MG649> MY MESSENGER<MG32a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>AHEAD<MG4253> OF YOU, <t><p class="indent1">WHO<MG3739> WILL PREPARE<MG2680> YOUR WAY<MG3598> BEFORE<MG1715> YOU.’ <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>I say<MG3004> to you, among<MG1722> those born<MG1084> of women<MG1135> there is no<MG3762> one<MG3762> greater<MG3173> than John<MG2491>; yet<MG1161> the one who is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>least<MG3398> in the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316> is greater<MG3173> than he.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>When all<MG3956> the people<MG2992> and the tax<MG5057> collectors<MG5057> heard<MG191> <i>this,</i> they acknowledged<MG1344> God’s<MG2316> justice<MG1344>, having been baptized<MG907> with the baptism<MG908> of John<MG2491>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But the Pharisees<MG5330> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>lawyers<MG3544> rejected<MG114> God’s<MG2316> purpose<MG1012> for themselves<MG1438>, not having been baptized<MG907> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>John. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>“To what<MG5101> then<MG3767> shall I compare<MG3666> the people<MG444> of this<MG3778> generation<MG1074>, and what<MG5101> are they like<MG3664>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>They are like<MG3664> children<MG3813> who sit<MG2521> in the marketplace<MG58> and call<MG4377> to<MG4377> one<MG240> another<MG240>, and say<MG3004>, ‘We played<MG832> the<MG832> flute<MG832> for you, and you did not dance<MG3738>; we sang<MG2354> a<MG2354> song<MG2354> of<MG2354> mourning<MG2354>, and you did not weep<MG2799>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>For John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG910> has come<MG2064> neither<MG3361> eating<MG2068> bread<MG740> nor<MG3383> drinking<MG4095> wine<MG3631>, and you say<MG3004>, ‘He has<MG2192> a demon<MG1140>!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>The Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> has come<MG2064> eating<MG2068> and drinking<MG4095>, and you say<MG3004>, ‘Behold<MG2400>, a gluttonous<MG5314> man<MG444> and a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>heavy<MG3630> drinker<MG3630>, a friend<MG5384> of tax<MG5057> collectors<MG5057> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>sinners<MG268>!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And <i>yet</i> wisdom<MG4678> is vindicated<MG1344> by all<MG3956> her children<MG5043>.” <p class="hdg">The Anointing in Galilee</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> one<MG5100> of the Pharisees<MG5330> was requesting<MG2065> Him to eat<MG2068> with him, and He entered<MG1525> the Pharisee’s<MG5330> house<MG3624> and reclined<MG2625> <i>at the table.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And there was a woman<MG1135> in the city<MG4172> who<MG3748> was a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>sinner<MG268>; and when she learned<MG1921> that He was reclining<MG2621> <i>at the table</i> in the Pharisee’s<MG5330> house<MG3614>, she brought<MG2865> an alabaster<MG211> vial<MG211> of perfume<MG3464>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>and standing<MG2476> behind<MG3694> <i>Him</i> at His feet<MG4228>, weeping<MG2799>, she began<MG757> to wet<MG1026> His feet<MG4228> with her tears<MG1144>, and she wiped<MG1591> them with the hair<MG2359> of her head<MG2776>, and <i>began</i> kissing<MG2705> His feet<MG4228> and anointing<MG218> them with the perfume<MG3464>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when the Pharisee<MG5330> who had invited<MG2564> Him saw<MG3708> <i>this,</i> he said<MG3004> to himself<MG1438>, “If<MG1487> this<MG3778> man<MG3778> were a prophet<MG4396> He would know<MG1097> who<MG5101> and what<MG4217> sort<MG4217> of<MG4217> person<MG4217> this<MG3588> woman<MG1135> <i>is</i> who<MG3748> is touching<MG681> Him, that she is a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>sinner<MG268>!” <p class="hdg">Parable of Two Debtors</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> responded<MG611> and said<MG3004> to him, “Simon<MG4613>, I have<MG2192> something<MG5100> to say<MG3004> to you.” And he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>replied<MG5346>, “Say<MG3004> it, Teacher<MG1320>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>“A moneylender<MG1157> had<MG1510> two<MG1417> debtors<MG5533>: the one<MG1520> owed<MG3784> five<MG4001> hundred<MG4001> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>denarii<MG1220>, and the other<MG2087>, fifty<MG4004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>When they were unable<MG3361, 2192> to repay<MG591>, he canceled<MG5483> the debts<MG5483> of both<MG297>. So<MG3767> which<MG5101> of them will love<MG25> him more<MG4183>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>Simon<MG4613> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004>, “I assume<MG5274> the one for whom<MG3739> he canceled<MG5483> the greater<MG4183> debt<MG5483>.” And He said<MG3004> to him, “You have judged<MG2919> correctly<MG3723>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/7-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And turning<MG4762> toward<MG4314> the woman<MG1135>, He said<MG5346> to Simon<MG4613>, “Do you see<MG991> this<MG3778> woman<MG1135>?
