Instead of waiting to fly to New York, for example, reroute to Washington, D.C., Baltimore or even Philadelphia if you can, and then ride Amtrak to New York.</p> <p>There just aren’t many good options for holiday vacationers trying to get back to New York, Boston and Chicago because of the severe weather. Between Thursday and Monday morning, airlines have canceled more than 16,000 flights, or about 17% of flight schedules, according to flight-tracking service FlightStats, leaving hundreds of thousands of people stuck, some for multiple days. Chicago has been hardest hit on Monday, but airports in the Northeast saw cancellations by the dozens Monday morning as well.</p> <p>The airline industry, lean and now profitable, has very little excess capacity available when things go wrong – few extra planes or crews to add flights to evacuate stranded passengers, for example, and few empty seats on flights that do depart. This series of storms and bitter cold has been particularly bad for travelers because it crippled airline operations, came at a busy holiday period and landed on top of a new federal regulation requiring more rest for pilots.</p> <p>Some airlines were better prepared to deal with the new rules than others ….</p> </div> <div class="articleTools_c"> <ul class="aTools"> <li class="viewall"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2014/01/06/travel-tips-for-outsmarting-the-winter-storm/">Continue Reading »</a></li> </ul> </div> </li> <li class="postitem"> <small class="timeStamp"> December 19, 2013 <br/> 03:22 PM </small> <div class="postContent"> <h2 class="postTitle"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2013/12/19/the-travelers-almanac-change-is-coming-in-2014/">The Traveler’s Almanac: Change is Coming in 2014</a></h2> <!-- <div class="newsImage"> <img alt="" src="http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/ED-AI444_dracul_DV_20081027170734.jpg"/> </div> --> <cite class="postAuthor">Posted by Scott McCartney</cite> <div class="mceTemp" style="text-align: left"> <dl class="wp-caption alignright caption-alignright " style="width: 262px"> <dt class="wp-caption-dt"><img class="size-full wp-image-5" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759im_/http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/PJ-BS241_MIDSEA_D_20131218193247.jpg" alt="" width="262" height="174"/></dt> <dd class="wp-caption-dd wp-cite-dd" style="text-align: right">Illustration by Tim Bower</dd> </dl> </div> <p>Pay more, tag more, sign-up more, expect more. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303773704579266261891542196" target="_blank">This week’s Middle Seat </a>offers a travelers almanac on the year ahead, from new technology at airports such as more self-service baggage tagging to big changes at key airports in New York, Washington, D.C., and Dallas that bring travelers new options for trips. Some airports have opened their own museums and most are designing new spaces and renovated terminals around artist concepts, from colorful light shows in otherwise drab spaces to works imbedded in long walkways and giant sculptures filling atriums.</p> <p>Many cities now require that 1% to 2% of public building projects be spent on art. Since airport terminals are expensive projects, sometimes running more than $1 billion, those ordinances yield big dollars for art. And since stress-levels and wait times at airports increased dramatically after the 2001 terrorist attacks, airports see art as a way to calm and entertain harried patrons, as well as a means to make a strong first impression on visitors to cities.</p> </div> <div class="articleTools_c"> <ul class="aTools"> <li class="viewall"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2013/09/19/the-airport-as-museum-major-art-work-to-see-on-your-next-trip/">Continue Reading »</a></li> </ul> </div> </li> <li class="postitem"> <small class="timeStamp"> September 12, 2013 <br/> 12:14 PM </small> <div class="postContent"> <h2 class="postTitle"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2013/09/12/summer-travel-woes-highlight-some-airline-shortcomings/">Summer Travel Woes Highlight Some Airline Shortcomings</a></h2> <!-- <div class="newsImage"> <img alt="" src="http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/ED-AI444_dracul_DV_20081027170734.jpg"/> </div> --> <cite class="postAuthor">Posted by Scott McCartney</cite> <div class="mceTemp" style="text-align: left"> <dl class="wp-caption alignright caption-alignright " style="width: 262px"> <dt class="wp-caption-dt"><img class="size-full wp-image-5" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759im_/http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/PJ-BQ478_MIDSEA_D_20130911191947.jpg" alt="" width="262" height="174"/></dt> <dd class="wp-caption-dd wp-cite-dd" style="text-align: right">Illustration by Dave Whamond</dd> </dl> </div> <p>Storms routinely disrupt air travel, but how airlines cope and recover is the key to getting travelers to their destination. If problems are isolated, delays can be limited. But if airlines don’t have room in schedules to catch up and run short of crews and airplanes, widespread meltdowns can leave travelers sitting for hours.</p> <p>That’s what happened this summer to Spirit Airlines, as <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324094704579069053848692132.html" target="_blank">this week’s Middle Seat </a>shows. In June, July and August, only 53% of Spirit flights arrived on-time, compared to 71% for the same months last year, according to flight-tracking firm FlightStats Analytics. A whopping 29% of Spirit’s summer flights were late by 45 minutes or more.</p> <p>For lots of travelers, summer travel this year was tough. A lot more flights were seriously delayed and a lot more flights were canceled. The East Coast was clobbered by frequent rain and thunderstorms, and the worst airport of all was on the West Coast: San Francisco.</p> <p>There were four plagues – rain, construction, accidents and airline problems. Overall, U.S. airlines posted an on-time arrival rate for June, July and August of 74.6%, according to FlightStats, down from 77.2% in summer 2012. The number of flights suffering delays of 45 minutes or more was up 16% and the number of canceled flights was up 15%. The number of mishandled bags – luggage that didn’t get delivered on the same flight as the customer – jumped 17% in June, according to the Department of Transportation. This morning the DOT reported that the number of mishandled bag reports in July was up 7%.</p> </div> <div class="articleTools_c"> <ul class="aTools"> <li class="viewall"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2013/09/12/summer-travel-woes-highlight-some-airline-shortcomings/">Continue Reading »</a></li> </ul> </div> </li> <li class="postitem"> <small class="timeStamp"> August 1, 2013 <br/> 11:29 AM </small> <div class="postContent"> <h2 class="postTitle"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150630215759/http://blogs.wsj.com/middleseat/2013/08/01/extending-u-s-border-by-preclearing-travelers-overseas/">Extending U.S. Border by ‘Preclearing’ Travelers Overseas</a></h2> <!-- <div class="newsImage"> <img alt="" src="http://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/ED-AI444_dracul_DV_20081027170734.jpg"/> </div> --> <cite class="postAuthor">Posted by Scott McCartney</cite> <p>Long passport and customs lines at U.S. airports have long been a problem.
