but on the seventh<MH7637> he shall leave<MH3318> as a free<MH2670> man<MH2670> without<MH2600> a payment<MH2600> <i>to you.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>If<MH518> he comes<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>alone<MH1610>, he shall leave<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>alone<MH1610>; if<MH518> he is the husband<MH1167> of a wife<MH802>, then his wife<MH802> shall leave<MH3318> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>If<MH518> his master<MH113> gives<MH5414> him a wife<MH802>, and she bears<MH3205> him sons<MH1121> or<MH176> daughters<MH1323>, the wife<MH802> and her children<MH3206> shall belong<MH1961> to her master<MH113>, and he shall leave<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>alone<MH1610>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But if<MH518> the slave<MH5650> plainly<MH559> says<MH559>, ‘I love<MH157> my master<MH113>, my wife<MH802>, and my children<MH1121>; I will not leave<MH3318> as a free<MH2670> man<MH2670>,’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>then his master<MH113> shall bring<MH5066> him to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>God<MH430>, then he shall bring<MH5066> him to the door<MH1817> or<MH176> the doorpost<MH4201>. And his master<MH113> shall pierce<MH7527> his ear<MH241> with an <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>awl<MH4836>; and he shall serve<MH5647> him permanently<MH5769>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“Now if<MH3588> a man<MH376> sells<MH4376> his daughter<MH1323> as a female<MH519> slave<MH519>, she is not to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>go<MH3318> free<MH3318> as the male<MH5650> slaves<MH5650> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>do<MH3318>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>If<MH518> she is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>displeasing<MH7451a> in the eyes<MH5869> of her master<MH113> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>who<MH834> designated<MH3259> her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed<MH6299>. He does not have<MH4910> authority<MH4910> to sell<MH4376> her to a foreign<MH5237> people<MH5971a>, because of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>unfairness<MH898> to her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And if<MH518> he designates<MH3259> her for his son<MH1121>, he shall deal<MH6213a> with her according to the custom<MH4941> of daughters<MH1323>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>If<MH518> he takes<MH3947> to himself another<MH312> woman<MH312>, he may not reduce<MH1639> her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>food<MH7607>, her clothing<MH3682>, or her conjugal<MH5772b> rights<MH5772b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But if<MH518> he will not do<MH6213a> these<MH428> three<MH7969> <i>things</i> for her, then she shall go<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>free<MH3318> for<MH2600> nothing<MH2600>, without<MH369> <i>payment of</i> money<MH3701>. <p class="hdg">Personal Injuries</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“He who strikes<MH5221> someone<MH376> so that he dies<MH4191> shall certainly<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Yet <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>if<MH834> he did not lie<MH6658a> in<MH6658a> wait<MH6658a> <i>for him,</i> but God<MH430> caused<MH579> <i>him</i> to<MH579> fall<MH579> into his hand<MH3027>, then I will appoint<MH7760> you a place<MH4725> to which<MH834> he may flee<MH5127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>If<MH3588>, however, someone<MH376> is enraged<MH2102> against<MH5921> his neighbor<MH7453>, so as to kill<MH2026> him in a cunning<MH6195> way<MH6195>, you are to take<MH3947> him <i>even</i> from My altar<MH4196>, to be put to death<MH4191>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“And one who strikes<MH5221> his father<MH1> or his mother<MH517> shall certainly<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Now one who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>kidnaps<MH1589> someone<MH376>, whether he sells<MH4376> him or he is found<MH4672> in his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>possession<MH3027>, shall certainly<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“And one who curses<MH7043> his father<MH1> or his mother<MH517> shall certainly<MH4191> be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“Now if<MH3588> people<MH376> have<MH7378> a<MH7378> quarrel<MH7378> and one<MH376> strikes<MH5221> the other<MH7453> with a stone<MH68> or<MH176> with a fist<MH106>, and he does not die<MH4191> but <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>is<MH5307> confined<MH5307> to bed<MH4904>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>if<MH518> he gets<MH6965> up<MH6965> and walks<MH1980> around<MH1980> outside<MH2351> on his staff<MH4938b>, then he who struck<MH5221> him shall go<MH5352> unpunished<MH5352>; he shall only<MH7534b> pay<MH5414> for his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>loss<MH7674> of time<MH7674>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>shall pay<MH7495> for<MH7495> his care<MH7495> until he is completely<MH7495> healed<MH7495>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“And if<MH3588> someone<MH376> strikes<MH5221> his male<MH5650> or<MH176> female<MH519> slave<MH519, 5650> with a rod<MH7626> and <i>the slave</i> dies<MH4191> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>at his hand<MH3027>, he shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>be punished<MH5358>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>If<MH518>, however<MH389>, <i>the slave</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>survives<MH5975> a day<MH3117> or<MH176> two, no<MH3808> vengeance<MH5358> shall be taken<MH5358>; for <i>the slave</i> is his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>property<MH3701>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“Now if<MH3588> people<MH376> struggle<MH5327b> with each other and strike<MH5062> a pregnant<MH2030> woman<MH802> so that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>she gives<MH3205> birth<MH3205> prematurely<MH3318>, but there is no<MH3808> injury<MH611>, <i>the guilty person</i> shall certainly<MH6064> be fined<MH6064> as the woman’s<MH802> husband<MH1167> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>may demand<MH7896> of him, and he shall pay<MH5414> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>as the judges<MH6414> <i>decide.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But if<MH518> there is <i>any further</i> injury<MH611>, then you shall appoint<MH5414> <i>as a penalty</i> life<MH5315> for life<MH5315>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>eye<MH5869> for eye<MH5869>, tooth<MH8127> for tooth<MH8127>, hand<MH3027> for hand<MH3027>, foot<MH7272> for foot<MH7272>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>burn<MH3555> for burn<MH3555>, wound<MH6482> for wound<MH6482>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>bruise<MH2250> for bruise<MH2250>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“And if<MH3588> someone<MH376> strikes<MH5221> the eye<MH5869> of his male<MH5650> or<MH176> female<MH519> slave<MH519, 5650> and destroys<MH7843> it, he shall let <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>the slave go<MH7971> free<MH2670> on<MH8478> account<MH8478> of<MH8478> the eye<MH5869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And if<MH518> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>knocks<MH5307> out<MH5307> a tooth<MH8127> of his male<MH5650> or<MH176> female<MH519> slave<MH519, 5650>, he shall let <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>the slave go<MH7971> free<MH2670> on<MH8478> account<MH8478> of<MH8478> the tooth<MH8127>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>“Now if<MH3588> an ox<MH7794> gores<MH5055> a man<MH376> or<MH176> a woman<MH802> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>to death<MH4191>, the ox<MH7794> shall certainly<MH5619> be stoned<MH5619> and its flesh<MH1320> shall not be eaten<MH398>; but the owner<MH1167> of the ox<MH7794> shall go unpunished<MH5355a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>If<MH518>, however, an ox<MH7794> was previously<MH8543, 8032a> in the habit<MH5056> of<MH5056> goring<MH5056> and its owner<MH1167> has been warned<MH5749b>, yet he does not confine<MH8104> it and it kills<MH4191> a man<MH376> or<MH176> a woman<MH802>, the ox<MH7794> shall be stoned<MH5619> and its owner<MH1167> also<MH1571> shall be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>If<MH518> a ransom<MH3724a> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>demanded<MH7896> of him, then he shall give<MH5414> for the redemption<MH6306b> of his life<MH5315> whatever<MH3605, 834> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>demanded<MH7896> of him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Whether<MH176> it gores<MH5055> a son<MH1121> or<MH176> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ag]</a></span>a daughter<MH1323>, it shall be done<MH6213a> to him according to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ah]</a></span>the same<MH2088> rule<MH4941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>If<MH518> the ox<MH7794> gores<MH5055> a male<MH5650> or<MH176> female<MH519> slave<MH519, 5650>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ai]</a></span>the owner shall give<MH5414> his <i>or her</i> master<MH113> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aj]</a></span>thirty<MH7970> shekels<MH8255> of silver<MH3701>, and the ox<MH7794> shall be stoned<MH5619>. <p class="hdg">Property Rights</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>“Now if<MH3588> someone<MH376> opens<MH6605a> a pit<MH953a>, or<MH176> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ak]</a></span>digs<MH3738a> a pit<MH953a> and does not cover<MH3680> it, and an ox<MH7794> or<MH176> a donkey<MH2543> falls<MH5307> into it, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>the owner<MH1167> of the pit<MH953a> shall make<MH7999a> restitution<MH7999a>; he shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[al]</a></span>give<MH7725> money<MH3701> to its owner<MH1167>, and the dead<MH4191> <i>animal</i> shall become<MH1961> his. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/21-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>“And if<MH3588> someone’s<MH376> ox<MH7794> injures<MH5062> another’s<MH7453> ox<MH7794> so that it dies<MH4191>, then they shall sell<MH4376> the live<MH2416a> ox<MH7794> and divide<MH2673> its proceeds<MH3701> equally;
