The original meaning of the word seems to have been "gay ornament," whence it passed to "gaiety," "desire of enjoyment," "desire" generally (<span class="greek">τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν σου</span>, LXX.). Dr. Kay translates, "thy gay heart;" Professor Cheyne, "thy desire."
