to generalized bacterial infection documented by positive blood culture in the first 28 days of life and is one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality in sub-Sahara Africa. Thrombocytopenia in newborns is a result of increased platelet consumption; sepsis was found to be the most common risk factor. The objective of the study was to determine if there are organism-specific platelet responses among the 2 groups of bacterial agents: Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and also to examine the association of platelet count and prothrombin time with neonatal septicemia. 232 blood samples were collected for this study. The blood culture was performed using Bactec 9050, an instrumented blood culture system. The platelet count and prothrombin time were performed using Abacus Junior 5 hematology analyzer and i-STAT 1 analyzer respectively. Of the 231 neonates hospitalized with clinical sepsis, blood culture reports were positive in 51 cases (21.4%). Klebsiella spp. (35.3%) and Staphylococcus aureus (27.5%) were the most common Gram-negative and Gram-positive isolates respectively. Thrombocytopenia was observed in 30 (58.8%) of the neonates with septicemia. Of the 9 (17.6%) patients with severe thrombocytopenia, seven (77.8%) had Klebsiella spp. septicemia. Out of the 21(63.6%) of thrombocytopenia produced by Gram-negative isolate, 17 (80.9) had increased prothrombin time. In conclusion, Gram-negative organisms showed the highest cases of severe thrombocytopenia and prolonged PT. This study has helped to establish a disturbance in hemostatic systems in neonates with septicemia. Further studies, however, may be required to assess other hemostasis parameters in order to understand their interaction with the infectious organisms in neonates. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neonates" title="neonates">neonates</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=septicemia" title=" septicemia"> septicemia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thrombocytopenia" title=" thrombocytopenia"> thrombocytopenia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prolonged%20prothrombin%20time" title=" prolonged prothrombin time"> prolonged prothrombin time</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=platelet%20count" title=" platelet count"> platelet count</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12120/thrombocytopenia-and-prolonged-prothrombin-time-in-neonatal-septicemia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12120.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">406</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Further Results on Modified Variational Iteration Method for the Analytical Solution of Nonlinear Advection Equations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20W.%20Gbolagade">A. The method is an elegant combination of Taylor’s series and the variational iteration method (VIM). Using Maple 18 for implementation, it is observed that the procedure provides rapidly convergent approximation with less computational efforts. The result shows that the concentration C(x,t) of the contaminated water decreases as distance x increases for the given time t. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modified%20variational%20iteration%20method" title="modified variational iteration method">modified variational iteration method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Burger%E2%80%99s%20equation" title=" Burger’s equation"> Burger’s equation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=porous%20media" title=" porous media"> porous media</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=partial%20differential%20equation" title=" partial differential equation"> partial differential equation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/44343/a-new-computational-method-for-the-solution-of-nonlinear-burgers-equation-arising-in-longitudinal-dispersion-phenomena-in-fluid-flow-through-porous-media" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/44343.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">321</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Using Discriminant Analysis to Forecast Crime Rate in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=O.%20P.%20Popoola">O. The work is interested in how gender (male and female) relates to offences committed against the government, against other properties, disturbance in public places, murder/robbery offences and other offences. The data used was collected from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). SPSS, the statistical package was used to analyse the data. Time plot was plotted on all the 29 offences gotten from the raw data. Eigenvalues and Multivariate tests, Wilks’ Lambda, standardized canonical discriminant function coefficients and the predicted classifications were estimated. The research shows that the distribution of the scores from each function is standardized to have a mean O and a standard deviation of 1. The magnitudes of the coefficients indicate how strongly the discriminating variable affects the score. In the predicted group membership, 172 cases that were predicted to commit crime against Government group, 66 were correctly predicted and 106 were incorrectly predicted. After going through the predicted classifications, we found out that most groups numbers that were correctly predicted were less than those that were incorrectly predicted. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=discriminant%20analysis" title="discriminant analysis">discriminant analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DA" title=" DA"> DA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multivariate%20analysis%20of%20variance" title=" multivariate analysis of variance"> multivariate analysis of variance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MANOVA" title=" MANOVA"> MANOVA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=canonical%20correlation" title=" canonical correlation"> canonical correlation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=and%20Wilks%E2%80%99%20Lambda" title=" and Wilks’ Lambda "> and Wilks’ Lambda </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26685/using-discriminant-analysis-to-forecast-crime-rate-in-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26685.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">468</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Mechanical Properties of Powder Metallurgy Processed Biodegradable Zn-Based Alloy for Biomedical Application</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maruf%20Yinka%20Kolawole">Maruf Yinka Kolawole</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jacob%20Olayiwola%20Aweda"> Jacob Olayiwola Aweda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Farasat%20Iqbal"> Farasat Iqbal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asif%20Ali"> Asif Ali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sulaiman%20Abdulkareem"> Sulaiman Abdulkareem</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Zinc is a non-ferrous metal with potential application in orthopaedic implant materials. However, its poor mechanical properties were major challenge to its application. Therefore, this paper studies the mechanical properties of biodegradable Zn-based alloy for biomedical application. Pure zinc powder with varying (0, 1, 2, 3 & 6) wt% of magnesium powders were ball milled using ball-to-powder ratio (B:P) of 10:1 at 350 rpm for 4 hours. The resulting milled powders were compacted and sintered at 300 MPa and 350 °C respectively. Microstructural, phase and mechanical properties analyses were performed following American standard of testing and measurement. The results show that magnesium has influence on the mechanical properties of zinc. The compressive strength, hardness and elastic modulus of 210 ± 8.878 MPa, 76 ± 5.707 HV and 45 ± 11.616 GPa respectively as obtained in Zn-2Mg alloy were optimum and meet the minimum requirement of biodegradable metal for orthopaedics application. These results indicate an increase of 111, 93 and 93% in compressive strength, hardness and elastic modulus respectively as compared to pure zinc. The increase in mechanical properties was adduced to effectiveness of compaction pressure and intermetallic phase formation within the matrix resulting in high dislocation density for improving strength. The study concluded that, Zn-2Mg alloy with optimum mechanical properties can therefore be considered a potential candidate for orthopaedic application. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Biodegradable%20metal" title="Biodegradable metal">Biodegradable metal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Biomedical%20application" title=" Biomedical application"> Biomedical application</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mechanical%20properties" title=" Mechanical properties"> Mechanical properties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Powder%20Metallurgy" title=" Powder Metallurgy"> Powder Metallurgy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zinc" title=" Zinc"> Zinc</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115000/mechanical-properties-of-powder-metallurgy-processed-biodegradable-zn-based-alloy-for-biomedical-application" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115000.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">142</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> The Impact of Covid-19 on Anxiety Levels in the General Population of the United States: An Exploratory Survey </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amro%20Matyori">Amro Matyori</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fatimah%20Sherbeny"> Fatimah Sherbeny</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Askal%20Ali"> Askal Ali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olayiwola%20Popoola"> Olayiwola Popoola</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Objectives: The study evaluated the impact of COVID-19 on anxiety levels in the general population in the United States. Methods: The study used an online questionnaire. It adopted the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7) instrument. It is a self-administered scale with seven items used as a screening tool and severity measure for generalized anxiety disorder. The participants rated the frequency of anxiety symptoms in the last two weeks on a Likert scale, which ranges from 0-3. Then the item points are summed to provide the total score. Results: Thirty-two participants completed the questionnaire. Among them, 24 (83%) females and 5 (17%) males. The age range of 18-24-year-old represented the most respondents. Only one of the participants tested positive for the COVID-19, and 39% of them, one of their family members, friends, or colleagues, tested positive for the coronavirus. Moreover, 10% have lost a family member, a close friend, or a colleague because of COVID-19. Among the respondents, there were ten who scored approximately five points on the GAD-7 scale, which indicates mild anxiety. Furthermore, eight participants scored 10 to 14 points, which put them under the category of moderate anxiety, and one individual who was categorized under severe anxiety scored 15 points. Conclusions: It is identified that most of the respondents scored the points that put them under the mild anxiety category during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also noticed that severe anxiety was the lowest among the participants, and people who tested positive and/or their family members, close friends, and colleagues were more likely to experience anxiety. Additionally, participants who lost friends or family members were also at high risk of anxiety. It is obvious the COVID-19 outcomes and too much thinking about the pandemic put people under stress which led to anxiety. Therefore, continuous assessment and monitoring of psychological outcomes during pandemics will help to establish early well-informed interventions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
