In the context of <a href="/acts/15.htm">Acts 15</a>, it refers to the time after the inclusion of the Gentiles into the early Christian church. This aligns with the prophetic timeline where God’s plan unfolds progressively, first through Israel and then extending to the Gentiles.<p><b>I will return</b><br>This suggests a divine intervention or a coming back to a previous state. It can be seen as a reference to God's promise to restore His people. Theologically, it echoes the hope of Christ’s return, a central tenet in Christian eschatology, where Jesus will come back to fulfill God's promises.<p><b>and rebuild the fallen tent of David</b><br>The "fallen tent of David" symbolizes the restoration of the Davidic kingdom, which had experienced decline and division. This imagery is drawn from <a href="/amos/9-11.htm">Amos 9:11</a>, where God promises to restore the house of David. It signifies the re-establishment of a kingdom under God's rule, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the descendant of David, who establishes an eternal kingdom.<p><b>Its ruins I will rebuild</b><br>This emphasizes the complete restoration from a state of disrepair. Historically, the Davidic line had been disrupted, and the nation of Israel had faced exile and destruction. The rebuilding signifies not just physical restoration but also spiritual renewal, pointing to the establishment of the church as the new Israel, where both Jews and Gentiles are united in Christ.<p><b>and I will restore it</b><br>Restoration here implies bringing back to a former or better state. It reflects God’s covenant faithfulness and His commitment to His promises. This restoration is not merely political or national but spiritual, as seen in the New Testament where the church becomes the new community of God’s people, fulfilling the promises made to David through the Messiah, Jesus Christ.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/james.htm">James</a></b><br>The leader of the Jerusalem church who speaks during the Jerusalem Council, quoting from the prophet Amos to support the inclusion of Gentiles in the church.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/j/jerusalem_council.htm">Jerusalem Council</a></b><br>A pivotal meeting of early church leaders to discuss the requirements for Gentile believers, particularly concerning the necessity of following Jewish law.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/d/david.htm">David</a></b><br>The reference to the "tent of David" symbolizes the restoration of the Davidic kingdom, which is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/a/amos.htm">Amos</a></b><br>An Old Testament prophet whose words are quoted by James to affirm God's plan to include the Gentiles in His redemptive work.<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/g/gentiles.htm">Gentiles</a></b><br>Non-Jewish people who are being welcomed into the early Christian community, signifying the expansion of God's covenant.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/g/god's_faithfulness_to_his_promises.htm">God's Faithfulness to His Promises</a></b><br>God's promise to restore the "tent of David" shows His faithfulness to His covenant with Israel and His plan to include all nations.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_inclusivity_of_the_gospel.htm">The Inclusivity of the Gospel</a></b><br>The restoration of David's tent signifies the opening of God's kingdom to all people, regardless of ethnic background.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_role_of_prophecy_in_the_new_testament.htm">The Role of Prophecy in the New Testament</a></b><br>The use of Old Testament prophecy in the New Testament highlights the continuity of God's redemptive plan.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/u/unity_in_diversity.htm">Unity in Diversity</a></b><br>The early church's decision to include Gentiles without requiring them to follow Jewish law demonstrates the unity and diversity within the body of Christ.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/r/restoration_and_renewal.htm">Restoration and Renewal</a></b><br>Just as God promised to rebuild the ruins of David's tent, He is in the business of restoring and renewing lives today.<div class="vheading2">Lists and Questions</div><a href="/top10/lessons_from_acts_15.htm">Top 10 Lessons from Acts 15</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/what's_the_tabernacle_of_david.htm">What does the tabernacle of David refer to?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/key_themes_in_zechariah's_prophecies.htm">What are the key themes in Zechariah's prophecies?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/key_themes_in_ezra.htm">What are the key themes in the Book of Ezra?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/what_are_the_3_biblical_tabernacles.htm">What are the three biblical tabernacles?</a><a name="commentary" id="commentary"></a><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/acts/15.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(16) <span class= "bld">After this I will return.</span>--It is a fact not without interest that the prophet from whom these words are taken (<a href="/context/amos/9-11.htm" title="In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:">Amos 9:11-12</a>) had been already quoted by Stephen (<a href="/acts/7-42.htm" title="Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O you house of Israel, have you offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?">Acts 7:42</a>). Those who then listened to him had, we may believe, been led to turn to the writings of Amos, and to find in them meanings which had hitherto been latent. The fact that the inference drawn from the passage mainly turns on a clause in which the LXX. version, which St. James quotes, differs from the Hebrew, shows, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the discussion must have been conducted in Greek, and not in Hebrew. At first this may appear strange in a council held at Jerusalem, but the trial of Stephen presents a precedent (see Note on <a href="/acts/7-1.htm" title="Then said the high priest, Are these things so?">Acts 7:1</a>); and it is obvious that in a debate which chiefly affected the interests of Greeks, and at which many of them, and of the Hellenistic Jews, were likely to be present, the use of that language, both in the debate and the decree in which it resulted, was almost a matter of necessity. Both languages were probably equally familiar to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (See Note on <a href="/acts/22-2.htm" title="(And when they heard that he spoke in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he said,)">Acts 22:2</a>.) The quotation suggests, perhaps implies, a fuller interpretation than is given in the summary of St. James's speech. It assumes that the "tabernacle of David," which to human eyes had been lying as in ruins, was being rebuilt by Christ, the Son of David, that He was doing the work which, in the prophecy, Jehovah claimed as His.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/acts/15.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 16.</span> - These <span class="accented">things</span> for <span class="accented">this</span>, A.V.; I <span class="accented">will</span> for <span class="accented">will</span>, A.V.; <span class="accented">fallen</span> for <span class="accented">fallen down</span>, A.V. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/acts/15-16.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Greek</div><span class="word">‘After</span><br /><span class="grk">Μετὰ</span> <span class="translit">(Meta)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_3326.htm">Strong's 3326: </a> </span><span class="str2">(a) gen: with, in company with, (b) acc: (1) behind, beyond, after, of place, (2) after, of time, with nouns, neut. of adjectives. </span><br /><br /><span class="word">[this]</span><br /><span class="grk">ταῦτα</span> <span class="translit">(tauta)</span><br /><span class="parse">Demonstrative Pronoun - Accusative Neuter Plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_3778.htm">Strong's 3778: </a> </span><span class="str2">This; he, she, it. </span><br /><br /><span class="word">I will return</span><br /><span class="grk">ἀναστρέψω</span> <span class="translit">(anastrepsō)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Future Indicative Active - 1st Person Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_390.htm">Strong's 390: </a> </span><span class="str2">From ana and strepho; to overturn; also to return; by implication, to busy oneself, i.e. Remain, live.</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and</span><br /><span class="grk">καὶ</span> <span class="translit">(kai)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunction<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_2532.htm">Strong's 2532: </a> </span><span class="str2">And, even, also, namely. </span><br /><br /><span class="word">rebuild</span><br /><span class="grk">ἀνοικοδομήσω</span> <span class="translit">(anoikodomēsō)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Future Indicative Active - 1st Person Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_456.htm">Strong's 456: </a> </span><span class="str2">From ana and oikodomeo; to rebuild.</span><br /><br /><span class="word">David’s</span><br /><span class="grk">Δαυὶδ</span> <span class="translit">(Dauid)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - Genitive Masculine Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_1138.htm">Strong's 1138: </a> </span><span class="str2">David, King of Israel.
