Adını ilk âyetinde geçen ve “güneş” anlamına gelen “şems” kelimesinden alır. “Ve’ş-şemsi”, “Ve’ş-şemsi ve duhâhâ” sûresi olarak da bilinir. On beş âyet olup fâsılası <span class="arapca" dir="rtl">ا</span> harfidir. Şems sûresinde, insanların üzerinde yaşadığı yer küresinin güneş sistemi içinde gözlenebilen konumuna ve işleyişine dikkat çekilerek tabiatın yaratıcısı ve yöneticisi olan Allah’ın varlığına ve birliğine, Hz. Sâlih’in gönderildiği Semûd kavminin âkıbetine temas edilir ve İslâm akaidinin nübüvvet esasına, ebedî kurtuluşun yahut hüsranın hatırlatılmasıyla insanlar ebedî âlemi teşkil eden âhirete inanmaya davet edilir. Bu çerçevede sûrenin muhtevasını iki bölüm halinde incelemek mümkündür. Birinci bölüm yemin ifadeleriyle başlar. Arka arkaya on bir defa tekrarlanan bu yeminin konuları şöylece sıralanabilir: Güneş, onun kuşluk vaktindeki parıltısı, güneşin batışından sonra görünen ay, onun alaca karanlığını ortadan kaldıran gündüz vakti, bunu da karanlığıyla örten gece, gökyüzü ve onun sistemini kuran (yahut sisteminin kuruluşu), yer ve onu yayıp döşeyen (yahut yayılıp döşenmesi), ayrıca insan ve onu en güzel biçimde şekillendiren (yahut onun en güzel biçimde şekillendirilmesi). Âyetlerde üzerine yemin edilen şeylerin dokuzu insanın dışındaki varlıklar iken son ikisi bizzat onun kendisidir. Böylece yeminlerle pekiştirilip dikkat çekilen varlığın insan olduğu ortaya çıkmaktadır. Nitekim yeminlerin ardından insanın yaratılışına hem iyi hem kötü yetenek ve imkânların yerleştirildiği ifade edilmekte, onun iradesiyle iyi yeteneklerini kullanması halinde kurtuluşa ve cennete kavuşacağı, aksi takdirde hüsrana uğrayacağı belirtilmektedir (âyet 1-10). </p><p> İkinci bölümde geçmiş kavimlerden ibret verici bir örnek olarak Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’in birçok yerinde zikri geçen Semûd kavminden söz edilir. Sürekli biçimde Allah’ın elçilerini yalancı ve şımarık, son elçi Hz. Sâlih’i de büyülenmiş bir kişi diye nitelendirilen bu kavmin (eş-Şuarâ 26/141-159; el-Kamer 54/23-31) azgınlıklarına kapılarak Hz. Sâlih’i yalanladıkları, atalarından beri süregelen mûcize taleplerine karşılık kendilerine özelliği bulunan bir deve gönderilip ona ilişmemelerinin istendiği, fakat içlerinden en azgın kişinin deveyi kestiği, bunun üzerine -korkunç bir sesle- helâk edildikleri belirtilir (âyet 11-15). Kur’an’da, geçmiş peygamberlerin ümmetlerine dair yer alan bu tür kıssalarla ibretin yanı sıra tehdit ve uyarı da amaçlanmaktadır. Sûrede maddî-hissî mûcize olarak söz konusu edilen devenin Kur’an’ın ilk muhatabı Mekkeliler’in ihtiyaç duyduğu bir hayvan olması ayrıca dikkat çekmektedir. Şems sûresi İslâm’ın temel inanç esaslarına iman etmeye, kâinatın yaratıcısı ve yöneticisi olan tek Allah’a teslim olmaya çağrıda bulunurken insanın zihnine ve gönlüne hitap eden muhtevasından başka üstün seviyedeki edebî üslûp ve ifadesiyle de okuyucuyu etkilemektedir. Sûrede harfler, bunların oluşturduğu kelimeler ve bunlardan meydana gelen cümlelerin kuruluşu telaffuza kolaylık sağlarken sûreye hâkim olan âhenkli ses kişiye ayrıca mensur şiir zevki vermektedir. Sûrede on beş âyetin her biri “-hâ” secileriyle sona ermektedir. </p><p> Şems sûresinin Resûlullah’a özgü bir lutf-i ilâhî olan mufassal sûreler grubu içinde yer aldığı bilinmektedir (<span class="kisaltma" data-ad="musned"><i>Müsned</i></span>, IV, 107). Hz. Peygamber’in bu sûreyi yatsı namazlarında okuduğu ve kendi mahallesinde namaz kıldıran Muâz b. Cebel’e yatsı namazını uzatmayarak Şems, Duhâ, Leyl ve A‘lâ sûrelerini okumasını tavsiye ettiği nakledilmektedir (Buhârî, “Eẕân”, 63; Müslim, “Ṣalât”, 178-179; Tirmizî, “Ṣalât”, 114). Bazı tefsir kaynaklarında yer alan, “Şems sûresini okuyan kimse, üzerine güneşin ve ayın doğduğu her şeyi sadaka olarak vermiş gibi olur” meâlindeki hadisin (meselâ bk. Zemahşerî, VI, 384; Beyzâvî, IV, 423) mevzû olduğu kabul edilmiştir (Zemahşerî, I, 684-685 [neşredenin notu]; Trablusî, II, 727).
