The term "Israel" refers to Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel after wrestling with God (Genesis 32:28). This change signifies a transformation and a divine calling, marking the beginning of a nation chosen by God. The sons of Israel are the patriarchs of the twelve tribes, each playing a crucial role in the unfolding of God's covenant with His people.
Reuben
As the firstborn son of Jacob and Leah, Reuben holds a position of prominence. His name, derived from the Hebrew "Re'uven," means "behold, a son." Despite his birthright, Reuben's actions, such as his indiscretion with Bilhah (Genesis 35:22), led to the loss of his preeminent status. This serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the importance of integrity in leadership.
Simeon
The second son of Jacob and Leah, Simeon's name means "heard" in Hebrew, reflecting Leah's belief that God heard her plight (Genesis 29:33). Simeon, along with his brother Levi, is known for the violent act against Shechem (Genesis 34), which later affected the tribe's inheritance and dispersion in Israel. This highlights the theme of justice and the repercussions of unchecked anger.
Levi
Levi, the third son of Jacob and Leah, is the progenitor of the Levitical priesthood. His name means "joined" or "attached," signifying Leah's hope for Jacob's affection (Genesis 29:34). The Levites were set apart for religious duties, underscoring the importance of holiness and service to God. This lineage emphasizes the role of spiritual leadership and the call to be set apart for divine purposes.
Judah
Judah, the fourth son of Jacob and Leah, means "praise" in Hebrew. His tribe becomes the most prominent, producing King David and ultimately Jesus Christ, the Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5). Judah's account is one of redemption, as he evolves from selling Joseph into slavery to offering himself as a substitute for Benjamin (Genesis 44:33). This transformation illustrates God's grace and the power of repentance.
Issachar
The fifth son of Jacob and Leah, Issachar's name means "reward" or "recompense." His tribe is known for its wisdom and understanding of the times (1 Chronicles 12:32). Issachar's role in Israel's history highlights the value of discernment and the ability to navigate complex situations with insight and prudence.
Zebulun
The sixth son of Jacob and Leah, Zebulun's name is associated with "dwelling" or "honor." His tribe settled by the sea, fulfilling Jacob's blessing of maritime prosperity (Genesis 49:13). Zebulun's legacy is one of trade and commerce, reflecting the diversity of gifts and callings within the body of God's people. This reminds us of the importance of using our unique talents to contribute to the community and glorify God.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(1, 2) The sons of Israel.--The list is apparently taken from Genesis 35:23-26, where the heading is, "Now the sons of Jacob were twelve." The chronicler omits the mothers, and puts Dan before instead of after Joseph and Benjamin, as if to hint that Dan was considered Rachel's elder son. (See Genesis 30:6.) In the list at Genesis 46:9-23, Gad and Asher follow Zebulun, and Dan follows Joseph and Benjamin. Of course accident may have caused the transposition of Dan with Joseph and Benjamin in our list, especially as it otherwise agrees with Genesis 35:3-4.

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 1, 2. - 1. TABLE OF ISRAEL'S TWELVE SONS. The twelve sons of Israel, not in the order of age (cf. Genesis 29:31-30:24; Genesis 35:16-19), nor exactly in the order of children of wives as against those of handmaids (Genesis 25:23-26), nor in that of the aged father's dying blessing (Genesis 49.), nor in that of Exodus 1:2-4. It is the place of Dan which disturbs the fittest order, and Keil suggests that his place in this text is accounted for by Rachel's desire that her handmaid's child should be accounted her own; but surely this was not exceptional, but applied to all or most of such cases, and should have been far rather taken into consideration in any of the other lists than in this. However accounted for, the order is - lest, the six sons of the first wife Leah; secondly, the elder son of Rachel's handmaid Bilhah; thirdly, the two sons of the loved wife Rachel; fourthly, the other son of Rachel's handmaid Billah; lastly, the two sons of Zilpah, handmaid of Leah. As this order corresponds with nothing in our Old Testament, it may serve as one slight indication that the compiler of Chronicles was not dependent on these records alone. The Hebrew text and the Septuagint accord exactly with the Authorized Version here.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
These
אֵ֖לֶּה (’êl·leh)
Pronoun - common plural
Strong's 428: These, those

were the sons
בְּנֵ֣י (bə·nê)
Noun - masculine plural construct
Strong's 1121: A son

of Israel:
יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (yiś·rā·’êl)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 3478: Israel -- 'God strives', another name of Jacob and his desc

Reuben,
רְאוּבֵ֤ן (rə·’ū·ḇên)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 7205: Reuben -- 'behold a son!' oldest son of Jacob, also his desc

Simeon,
שִׁמְעוֹן֙ (šim·‘ō·wn)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 8095: Simeon -- a son of Jacob, also his tribe, also an Israelite with a foreign wife

Levi,
לֵוִ֣י (lê·wî)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 3878: Levi -- a son of Jacob, also the tribe descended from him

Judah,
וִיהוּדָ֔ה (wî·hū·ḏāh)
Conjunctive waw |
