<poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Instead, the man<MH376> <i>who</i> touches<MH5060> them <t><p class="indent1">Must be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>armed<MH4390> with iron<MH1270> and the shaft<MH6086> of a spear<MH2595>, <t><p class="indent1">And they will be completely<MH8313> burned<MH8313> with fire<MH784> in <i>their</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>place<MH7675>.” <p class="hdg">David’s Mighty Men</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>These<MH428> are the names<MH8034> of the mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> whom<MH834> David<MH1732> had: Josheb-basshebeth<MH3429>, a Tahchemonite<MH8461>, chief<MH7218> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>captains<MH7991c>; he was <i>called</i> Adino<MH5722> the Eznite<MH6112> because<MH5921> of eight<MH8083> hundred<MH3967> who were killed<MH2491a> <i>by him</i> at one<MH259> time<MH6471>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And after<MH310> him was Eleazar<MH499> the son<MH1121> of Dodo<MH1734> the Ahohite<MH266>, one of the three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> with David<MH1732> when they defied<MH2778a> the Philistines<MH6430> who were gathered<MH622> there<MH8033> to battle<MH4421> and the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>withdrawn<MH5927>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> and struck<MH5221> the Philistines<MH6430> until<MH5704, 3588> his hand<MH3027> was weary<MH3021> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>it clung<MH1692> to the sword<MH2719>, and the LORD<MH3068> brought<MH6213a> about<MH6213a> a great<MH1419> victory<MH8668> that day<MH3117>; and the people<MH5971a> returned<MH7725> after<MH310> him only<MH389> to plunder<MH6584> <i>the dead.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now after<MH310> him was Shammah<MH8048> the son<MH1121> of Agee<MH89>, a Hararite<MH2043>. And the Philistines<MH6430> were gathered<MH622> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>into an army<MH2422a> where<MH8033> there<MH8033> was a plot<MH2513a> of land<MH7704> full<MH4392> of lentils<MH5742>, and the people<MH5971a> fled<MH5127> from the Philistines<MH6430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But he took<MH3320> his stand<MH3320> in the midst<MH8432> of the plot<MH2513a>, defended<MH5337> it, and struck<MH5221> the Philistines<MH6430>; and the LORD<MH3068> brought<MH6213a> about<MH6213a> a great<MH1419> victory<MH8668>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then three<MH7969> of the thirty<MH7970> chief<MH7218> men<MH7218> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> and came<MH935> to David<MH1732> at harvest<MH7105a> time<MH7105a> to the cave<MH4631> of Adullam<MH5725>, while the army<MH2422a> of the Philistines<MH6430> was camping<MH2583> in the Valley<MH6010> of Rephaim<MH7497>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>David<MH1732> was then<MH227> in the stronghold<MH4686b>, while the garrison<MH4673> of the Philistines<MH6430> was then<MH227> in Bethlehem<MH1035>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> had<MH183> a<MH183> craving<MH183> and said<MH559>, “Oh<MH4310> that someone<MH4310> would give<MH8248> me water<MH4325> to<MH8248> drink<MH8248> from the well<MH877> of Bethlehem<MH1035> which<MH834> is by the gate<MH8179>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So the three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> forced<MH1234> their way<MH1234> into the camp<MH4264> of the Philistines<MH6430>, and drew<MH7579> water<MH4325> from the well<MH877> of Bethlehem<MH1035> which<MH834> was by the gate<MH8179>, and carried<MH5375> <i>it</i> and brought<MH935> <i>it</i> to David<MH1732>. Yet he would<MH14> not drink<MH8354> it, but poured<MH5258a> it out<MH5258a> as<MH5258a> an<MH5258a> offering<MH5258a> to the LORD<MH3068>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>and he said<MH559>, “Far<MH2486> be it from me, LORD<MH3068>, that I would do<MH6213a> this<MH2088>! <i>Should I drink</i> the blood<MH1818> of the men<MH376> who went<MH1980> at <i>the risk of</i> their lives<MH5315>?” So he would<MH14> not drink<MH8354> it. These<MH428> things<MH428> the three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> did<MH6213a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Abishai<MH52>, the brother<MH251> of Joab<MH3097>, the son<MH1121> of Zeruiah<MH6870>, was chief<MH7218> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>thirty<MH7992>. And he swung<MH5782> his spear<MH2595> against<MH5921> three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>and killed<MH2491a> <i>them,</i> and had a name<MH8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>as well as the three<MH7969>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He was the most<MH3513> honored<MH3513> among<MH4480> the thirty<MH7969>, so he became<MH1961> their commander<MH8269>; however, he did not attain<MH935> to <i>the reputation</i> of the three<MH7969>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, the son<MH1121> of a valiant<MH2428> man<MH376> of Kabzeel<MH6909>, who had done great<MH7227a> deeds<MH6467>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>killed<MH5221> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>two<MH8147> <i>sons of</i> Ariel<MH739> of Moab<MH4124>. He also went<MH3381> down<MH3381> and killed<MH5221> a lion<MH743b> in the middle<MH8432> of a pit<MH877> on a snowy<MH7950> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>killed<MH5221> an Egyptian<MH4713>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>an impressive<MH4758> man<MH376>. Now the Egyptian<MH4713> <i>had</i> a spear<MH2595> in his hand<MH3027>, but he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to him with a club<MH7626> and snatched<MH1497> the spear<MH2595> from the Egyptian’s<MH4713> hand<MH3027>, and killed<MH2026> him with his own spear<MH2595>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>These<MH428> <i>things</i> Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> did<MH6213a>, and had a name<MH8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>as well as the three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>He was honored<MH3513> among<MH4480> the thirty<MH7970>, but he did not attain<MH935> <i>the reputation</i> of the three<MH7969>.
