and that man<MH376> was blameless<MH8535>, upright<MH3477>, fearing<MH3372a> God<MH430> and turning<MH5493> away<MH5493> from evil<MH7451b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Seven<MH7651> sons<MH1121> and three<MH7969> daughters<MH1323> were born<MH3205> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>His possessions<MH4735> were seven<MH7651> thousand<MH505> sheep<MH6629>, three<MH7969> thousand<MH505> camels<MH1581>, five<MH2568> hundred<MH3967> yoke<MH6776> of oxen<MH1241>, five<MH2568> hundred<MH3967> female<MH860> donkeys<MH860>, and very<MH3966> many<MH7227a> servants<MH5657>; and that man<MH376> was the greatest<MH1419> of all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>men<MH1121> of the east<MH6924a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>His sons<MH1121> used to go<MH1980> and hold<MH6213a> a feast<MH4960> in the house<MH1004> of each<MH376> one<MH376> on his day<MH3117>, and they would send<MH7971> <i>word</i> and invite<MH7121> their three<MH7969> sisters<MH269> to eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354> with them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When<MH3588> the days<MH3117> of feasting<MH4960> had completed<MH5362b> their cycle<MH5362b>, Job<MH347> would send<MH7971> <i>word to them</i> and consecrate<MH6942> them, getting<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and offering<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> <i>according to</i> the number<MH4557> of them all<MH3605>; for Job<MH347> said<MH559>, “Perhaps<MH194> my sons<MH1121> have sinned<MH2398> and cursed<MH1288> God<MH430> in their hearts<MH3824>.” Job<MH347> did<MH6213a> so<MH3602> continually<MH3605, 3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now there was a day<MH3117> when the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>sons<MH1121> of God<MH430> came<MH935> to present<MH3320> themselves before<MH5921> the LORD<MH3068>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Satan<MH7854> also<MH1571> came<MH935> among<MH8432> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Satan<MH7854>, “From where<MH370> do you come<MH935>?” Satan<MH7854> answered<MH6030a> the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, “From roaming<MH7751a> about<MH7751a> on the earth<MH776> and walking<MH1980> around<MH1980> on it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Satan<MH7854>, “Have you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>considered<MH7760, 3820, 5921> My servant<MH5650> Job<MH347>? For there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> one<MH369> like<MH3644> him on the earth<MH776>, a blameless<MH8535> and upright<MH3477> man<MH376>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>fearing<MH3372a> God<MH430> and turning<MH5493> away<MH5493> from evil<MH7451b>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then Satan<MH7854> answered<MH6030a> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>LORD<MH3068>, “Does Job<MH347> fear<MH3372a> God<MH430> for<MH2600> nothing<MH2600>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Have You not made<MH7753> a<MH7753> fence<MH7753> around<MH1157> him and his house<MH1004> and all<MH3605> that he has, on every<MH5439> side<MH5439>? You have blessed<MH1288> the work<MH4639> of his hands<MH3027>, and his possessions<MH4735> have increased<MH6555> in the land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But reach<MH7971> out<MH7971> with Your hand<MH3027> now<MH4994> and touch<MH5060> all<MH3605> that he has; he will certainly<MH518, 3808> curse<MH1288> You to Your face<MH6440>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Satan<MH7854>, “Behold<MH2009>, all<MH3605> that he has is in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>power<MH3027>; only<MH7534b> do not reach<MH7971> out<MH7971> <i>and put</i> your hand<MH3027> on him.” So Satan<MH7854> departed<MH3318> from the presence<MH6440> of the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">Satan Allowed to Test Job</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now on the day<MH3117> when his sons<MH1121> and his daughters<MH1323> were eating<MH398> and drinking<MH8354> wine<MH3196> in their oldest<MH1060> brother’s<MH251> house<MH1004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>a messenger<MH4397> came<MH935> to Job<MH347> and said<MH559>, “The oxen<MH1241> were plowing<MH2790a> and the female<MH860> donkeys<MH860> feeding<MH7462a> beside<MH5921, 3027> them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/job/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the Sabeans<MH7614> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>attacked<MH5307> and took<MH3947> them.
