Despite the divine nature of some of these characters, their struggles are often relatable, as they too are subject to the same emotions and desires as mortals. Although some scholars suggest that eros also embodies sexual desire, it is important to note that the term “intimate” did not carry the same connotation in Ancient Greece as it does in our modern world.</p><p id="fef9" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">In fact, eros was not always regarded favorably by the Greeks, who saw it as a potentially dangerous force that could rob an individual of their self-control. The concept of eros was personified in Greek mythology by the god Cupid and his fabled arrow, which could ignite the flames of passion in even the most stoic of hearts. Consider, for instance, the tale of Paris and Helen, whose love affair led to the downfall of Troy.</p><p id="7208" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">But for the philosopher Plato, eros was more than just a primal urge. It was a natural desire to seek true beauty, a pursuit that he believed lay at the heart of the human experience. In his words, “He who loves the beautiful is called a lover because he partakes of it.” So let us remember, as we navigate the turbulent waters of love, that eros is both a force to be reckoned with and a gateway to the sublime.</p><p id="bd02" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk"><strong class="mx hk">Philia: </strong><br/>In the eyes of the Greeks, eros was viewed with caution, while philia was celebrated as the ultimate form of love. Philia, which in modern terms could be described as a type of “brotherly love,” was characterized by loyalty, sacrifice, appreciation, and other virtuous expressions of love that didn’t involve sexual desire.</p><p id="3f42" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">According to Aristotle, there were three reasons why one might feel philia towards another person: because they are useful, because they are pleasant, or because they are good. Additionally, Aristotle believed that one must first love oneself before being able to love others — a maxim that has been passed down through the ages.</p><p id="6a18" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">Plato, on the other hand, maintained that the most powerful form of philia arises from eros, which is not unlike the many people today who consider their partner to be their closest friend.</p><p id="33cb" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">And then there is<a class="af od" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storge" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"> storge</a>, a type of love that falls within the realm of philia, depending on how you choose to define it. Storge is an inherent love, such as the love between parents and their children — a love that is as natural and necessary as the air we breathe.</p><p id="2db2" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk"><strong class="mx hk">Agape:</strong><br/>In exploring the various types of love, we come upon agape, which is a bit more elusive than the others. Some refer to agape as universal love, altruism, or charity. It is a love that we freely give to others, regardless of our relationship with them. This love is not bound by any conditions or expectations, and it is driven by a deep desire to help, cooperate, and do good towards others.</p><p id="ba1a" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">Though agape may seem abstract, studies show that it can actually have a positive impact on our mental health. It can help us to negate the effects of stress and to feel a sense of fulfillment in our lives. It is a reminder that there is beauty and fullness in experiencing multiple types of love in our lives.</p><p id="7816" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mv mw hj mx b my mz na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns gn bk">We must not become so consumed with our romantic relationships that we neglect the importance of our friendships, family members, and the love of strangers.
