They represent 6 of the 29 marine regions identified in the <abbr title="National Marine Conservation Areas">NMCA</abbr> system plan, and protect approximately 123,490 square kilometers of Canada’s marine and freshwater ecosystems in the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans and the Great Lakes. In 2021 Parks Canada committed to establishing 10 new marine and four new freshwater <abbr title="National Marine Conservation Areas">NMCA</abbr>s by 2030, working with Indigenous communities on co-management agreements for these <abbr title="National Marine Conservation Areas">NMCA</abbr>s.</p> <p><abbr title="National Marine Conservation Areas">NMCA</abbr>s are part of a growing worldwide network of marine protected areas. The Government of Canada is committed to contributing to global conservation targets by protecting biodiversity and conserving 30% of marine and coastal areas by 2030. Parks Canada has contributed 2.12% to Canada’s current total of over 14% marine protection.</p> <p><abbr title="National Marine Conservation Areas">NMCA</abbr>s include submerged lands, the water above them, and any species found there.
