In ‘bringing the body’ to the fore in research, there are epistemological and conceptual tensions between ‘humanist’ methods of qualitative data collection and ‘anti-humanist’ understandings of the body and subjectivity in feminist post-structural theory and research. There are also tensions between accounts of researcher ‘reflexivity’, and the binary opposition between ‘researcher’ and ‘researched’. Sandelowski (2002) and Blumenthal (1999) argue that qualitative methods such as interviews must make room for the multiplicity and variation within and across identities, and factor in that the ‘self’ of the researcher is also multiple and divided. Attending to the affects and relations between the participants in the interview encounter has been proposed as one way forward (Fox \u0026amp;amp; Ward 2008; St. Pierre 2002; Sandelowski 2002). This presentation discusses these tensions as they arose during an empirical research project which attempted to make explicit what a Deleuzian approach means in sociological practice, and asks how a Deleuzian approach to the body and embodiment might be brought to bear in the sociology of youth? What could methodological developments of this kind contribute in the way of previously un-thought questions, practices and knowledge in the sociology of The scholars of that school of thought willingly surpass agency/social structure models of understanding and in turn enlarge their theoretical frameworks, which better encapsulates the intricacy of humans and social life. In using the example of the body and the self, I have shown the potential of adopting theories of embodiment, identification and subjectification to achieve a more holistic apprehension when regarding the formation of gender identities. By drawing on my fieldwork at the Collectif Mixité, a Youth House association that works on gender issues such as sexism, I have shown in a parallel argument with poststructuralist concepts of identification and subjectification, how normative conceptions of gender (e.g. on behalf of the organisers) govern the possibilities of identification (e.g. for the participants) in terms of gender identities. Additionally, I have used examples of how participants define &#39;being a boy&#39; and &#39;being a girl&#39;, as well as their experiences of gender relations and my field observations concerning the bodily use through the conceptual frame of gender. In doing so, presenting the merits and possibilities of adopting the approach of ‘materiality of the body’ to further investigate embodied experiences of gender identities among adolescents. Such an approach unthreads the discursive and affective constraints, contradictions and pressures of voice (cf. Jackson, 2003; MacLure, 2009), as well as the creation of new collective subjectivities in participatory research. This presentation will briefly review poststructural critiques of voice, power/ knowledge and subjectivication in participatory research, before considering how the concepts of Deleuze and Guattari might shift the questions asked by participatory researchers about particular methodological impasses. Examining particular participatory research encounters when there were blockages, leaks and tears in co-theorising ‘student voice’ in a low socioeconomic school reform process, connections are made to other economic, historical, political and social forces and struggles (Albrecht-Crane &amp; Slack, 2007; Mulcahy, 2012). It focuses particularly on an incident involving the researcher and a young man.
